"The Abandoned" (1872) by Hugues Merle.
In this painting, a young mother sits barefoot on the floor and cradies her baby, If look closely, we can see a tear slowly run down her face. In the state of despair and sorrow, she turns to the side in an attempt to hide her sadness from her child.
In the 19th century, if a young and unmarried women was found to be pregnant, she was abandoned by her family. We can assume that this painting depicts this exact predicament because of its title.
In the distance, Hugues Merle illustrates a wedding scene. The happiness of the wedding enhances the sorrow of the young mother, who weeps alone by the frame of the door.
