We've seen Crowley incandescently angry after the Gabriel argument, we've seen him in shocked devastation driving away from the bookshop fire, we've seen him drunk and crying as he mourns, we've seen his face cycle thru 12 emotions a second at the airfield at the almost-end of the world. But something about the hard set of his mouth, jaw clenched so tight it looks almost painful, how his whole body lacks its usual animation, how he stands stock-still as he watches Aziraphale leave the world... we've never seen him like this before. He's angry yes, but it's useless anger, it's cold, it's not burning him up - he's hollowed out, he's resigned, he's shutting his mouth so tightly it's like he wishes he had never opened it, for any reason.
"I could play him like a fiddle" they say in unison
Heard the news
I was thinking about Anthony J Crowley, as all normal ones do, and how it is that he seems to exist alone outside the dichotomy of Heaven and Hell. Crowley wasn't obedient enough to be an angel, he couldn't toe the party line, he wasn't deferential enough to God or any authority. But he's also not cruel, or apathetic enough to be a demon; he's too soft for Hell.
So what is Crowley? Not an angel, not a demon ("Former demon," he says in s2). But he's more than what he's not. Crowley is outside the Heaven/Hell binary because of who he is, the one identity that sets him apart from all other demons and angels: Crowley is the Serpent of Eden. The snake in the garden was the instigator of choice, the inspiration to humans to use free will. That's who Crowley is, and when he inspired Eve to eat the fruit of the tree of knowledge, he aligned himself with the fate of humans.
Crowley doesn't belong to Hell, and he certainly doesn't belong to Heaven. Crowley belongs to humanity.

ooouh now I'm thinking about what a reunion would actually look like if it did happen
maybe ramon, stuck growing up on quesadilla island alone post canon, would end up trying to rebel against the federation (who was still somewhat in charge) in some major way, which madagio would observe. So maybe madagio would strike a deal with an older teen/ young adult ramon , using ramon to try and achieve his original goal. Ramon, jaded, would accept. if ramon actually succeeded where his father failed, and destroyed something crucial or was able to wipe out the fed's influence on quesadilla for good, his reward from madagio would be to bring his father to him.
Ramรณn would look so much older to Fit, almost (but still not quite) grown to fill out his father's aviator jacket. He'd be getting pretty close to him in height, too. To Ramรณn, Fit would look much the same ; years of hacking reality and hopping through worlds bugging his ability to age. His eyes would be darker, though, and he'd be significantly bloodier. Maybe even missing another appendage. They'd travel together back to the old lava cast, reminisce, maybe play hide and seek for old times sake despite the fact that they're both far too old for that anymore. And at the end of the day, they'd scrape together a rudimentary cake ( fit being particularly good at improvising meals from his time in the wasteland) , light a candle, and celebrate Ramon's birthday. Fulfilling the promise just before madagio comes back and informs them their time is up, and sends Fit back on his way.
Completed my little raccoon collection with the addition of a ringtail skull from @flannelfoxen โค๏ธ! Bottom image is of a white-nosed cotai, ringtail, and raccoon. All three are in the Procyonidae family.
