You looked up from your phone as you heard the door click shut. The sound drew you from your idle browsing and you moved to greet her. She was sitting on the floor when you got there, arms wrapped around her knees. You went to her, kneeling beside her and placing a hand on her back.

“Bad day?”

She didn’t respond in words, only a small nod and a vacant gaze. You gave her a small squeeze on the shoulder and began to remove her shoes. She made no move to resist and continued to stare into nothing. You were placing them on the rack when you felt a timid tug on the back of your shirt. You turned and sank down to look into her eyes, concern etched across you features. Her voice was little more than a flicker, barely brushing your ears and making you strain to hear.

“Can…, “she paused, as if she’d forgotten the words. “Can we do the thing…” she said, still holding the edge of your shirt clutched in one small hand.

You gave her a soft smile and nodded reassuringly. “Of course.”  

You slid your arm under her knees to lift her. She felt frail, drained, limp. You gently placed your lips to her head and carried her away. You laid her down on the mattress and began to undress her. Her shirt, her pants, her bra, everything to remind her of her day and its tribulations was whisked away and carefully stacked in a neat pile on the floor, out of sight. You handed her Mr. Snuzzles and she clutched him tightly to her chest as you gathered her new clothes and set them down beside her. She lifted her bottom mechanically and you slid the crinkly padding under her. You dusted your hands with the bottle of powder and rubbed the sweet-smelling powder into her delicate skin as she cooed quietly into her stuffed guardian.  

You smoothed the tapes tight around her hips and bade her to lift her arms. She gave a little whine, unhappy to momentarily lose the protective shield contact with Snuzzles afforded. You worked quickly to pull the cloth over her head, grinning at the giggles you produced when her head became momentarily trapped in the fabric. You snapped the buttons shut tight against her and gave her a loving squeeze before handing back Snuzzles The Protector. Despite Snuzzle’s best efforts, she looked at you and her mouth trembled slightly, a quake threatening to crumble the castle. You knew what to do and cupped her face in one hand and guiding the paci to her wavering lips. She gazed up at you through eyes half lidded with content and you pulled her close. The hint of a smile snuck across her lips as she nestled against you. There was no more worry. No more big girl thoughts. No more sad tears. There was only warmth, and care, and the soothing melody of your heart against her ear.

I want to drink milk out of a sippy cup while playing animal crossing. I want to cuddle up in my blankies watching cartoons. I want to be made little snacks and taken care of.

I don’t want to be big anymore.
