Haikyuu Locations - Aoba Johsai and Kitagawa Daiichi

Aoba Johsai literally means 'To the west of Aoba Castle'.

Haikyuu Locations - Aoba Johsai And Kitagawa Daiichi

Aoba Castle, also known as Sendai Castle, was built in the Edo period by the famous warlord Date Masamune, for whom Date Tech was named after. It is located in the Aoba ward of Sendai.

Sadly, a lot of it was destroyed over time, but most of all during the American bombing of Sendai during WWII, which also killed over 1000 people. Though only ruins remain, it is a popular tourist site. To the north and east of the castle hill lies the Hirose river, a famous landmark (it is mentioned in the Aoba Castle Love Song you hear Coach Ukai singing when Takeda-sensei was watching him in the store).

Kitagawa means 'north of the river' (and Daiichi means 'first', it's a common naming system for schools in a district. There are definitely schools called Kitagawa Daini - second, and Daisan - third, such as Minami Daisan, where Kyoutani went.

Since graduating students tend to go to Seijoh for high school, the schools are probably located near each other, and as such, I'm going to tentatively locate the Kitagawa area to the north of the Hirose river.

To me, the craziest thing about this panel isn't the extremely charged handshake, nor the intense eye contact, but rather the perspective.

To Me, The Craziest Thing About This Panel Isn't The Extremely Charged Handshake, Nor The Intense Eye

Furudate is really good at toying with perspective to convey the story's motifs and themes. Here, thanks to the perspective, it looks like the net is above Hinata and Kageyama, when in fact it isn't that tall. In fact, I know it's right between them. But with the way this panel was drawn, it looks like they're facing each other with an unobstructed view.

The imagery here is clear: it doesn't matter that they're on opposite sides of the net now, there's nothing keeping them apart anymore. They stand on even ground, on equal footing, face to face.

Metaphysically speaking

Kageyama represents Furudate’s own love for the sport, and Hinata represents the people he hopes to inspire to play the sport by creating Haikyuu.

So its really poetic how it ends with Kageyama finally finding in Hinata the rival he always dreamed of. Because it means that Furudate finally touched someone’s heart enough that they’ll start to play volleyball too

Like his art has finally touched someone.

time skip kagehina playing together and hinata's habit of calling for a toss has not changed the slightest... because of which there's fumbling on his side when he yells 'toss to me!' while ACTUALLY tossing to tobio, who spikes it... and then going 'i mean, I'll toss to you! Toss to you!' i really enjoy the idea that even during super difficult games at the olympics, they're bickering on the court about Hinata screaming 'toss! toss to me- NO I'LL TOSS TO YOU!' and Kageyama going, 'make up your mind, dumbass.'

(kageyama likes hinata's tosses. he won't admit it, because even if they're really good they're still 'shit in comparison to him'.)

When people ask what’s your favorite hq quote/line I’m sure they expect some philosophical saying like we aren’t limited to one way of being great or what will you become tomorrow but mine is ‘I’m here’ it’s life changing to me and Kageyama

But seriously tho “no one understands what is and is not important to you better than you do” resonates with me a lot, esp when it comes to my hobbies bc ppl are usually like it’s not that sEriOuS but it is to me

When People Ask What’s Your Favorite Hq Quote/line I’m Sure They Expect Some Philosophical Saying

Oh Kazuyo San the wise man that you were

Someone pointed out the way Tobio clutched the vb so close to his heart when kazuyo told him that and I can’t stop thinking about it he’s so precious

Jump then fall (fic rec)

Pairing: Hinata Shouyou/Kageyama Tobio

Tags: Fluff, pre-timeskip, feelings realization/development. feat. kageyama caring so much about him wtf.

Warnings: none.

Summary: “No—? What do you mean, no? Toss to me!” "No, dumbass.” Tobio is sure that he shouldn’t. Certain that the breaths Hinata takes are too labored, that the shake in his legs might floor him, that he’s overdone it—and he is determined to stop it now. OR: Tobio cares.

kagehina in Kageyama's classroom during lunch with hinata trying to get tobio to practice tosses with him, while kageyama completely ignores him to write his volley journal, which makes hinata curious so he starts being nosey and starts asking tobio what do even write in this... at first hinata does it out of annoyance but later develops genuine interest,,,

so now they're both sitting side by side in their classroom, talking in hushed voices about tobio's observations since spring tournament

Kageyama's Backstory Only Being Revealed Near The Very End Of The Series Is Really Interesting From A

Kageyama's backstory only being revealed near the very end of the series is really interesting from a meta perspective.

For reference, his chapter is 387 out of 402. That's 96% of the way in.

To contrast, other characters like Tsukishima and Yamaguchi's backstories are shown in Chapters 87-88.

Now, we do get the explanation for his "King of the Court" title in Chapter 6, at the start of the series, but we don't see how he got to that point, or why he started playing volleyball in the first place like Tsukishima's and Yamaguchi's stories show.

It creates this situation where, despite being the deuteragonist, the character our protagonist, Hinata, is practically glued to the entire series, we barely know anything about him.

We don't even know he has a sister until that point whereas other characters' siblings like Natsu, Saeko, Akiteru, Alisa have all made appearances way before then. Even Oikawa's sister, though we don't see her, we at least know she exists because of Takeru.

He's both closed off to us (the audience) as well as the other characters in the series, and this results in them finding him rude or disliking his character in general (see: the "Kageyama is abusive" discourse that somehow keeps popping up even now).

Chapter 387 takes place in 2018 and was published in 2020 so it takes him 6 years of in-universe time and 8 years of irl time to really open up.

And the catalyst for all of this is Hinata fulfilling his promise of beating him.

You see, another thing to note is that, whenever Hinata thinks of Kageyama, he's always looking at him from behind.

His internal image of him is someone who's always up ahead, someone he needs to catch up to, meaning Hinata can only see one side of him, he cannot see all of Kageyama until he catches up and passes him.

Which he finally does here.

In this shot Hinata is finally the one who's looking back at Kageyama. At this moment, Hinata (and by extension the audience) can see him for all he is, can see how he was just a lonely boy who's been waiting for someone to meet him where he is, to keep running alongside him and not quit the race.

Someone he doesn't have to go easy on. Someone who would actually tell him to hurry up instead of slow down for a change.
