Miami 2010
I lived in Miami for a few years. I rented a small apartment right on the bay. It was lovely. Iguanas and land crabs used to wander around the yard. Beat that!
Miami has some of the most lovely beaches on earth. I used to hang out at oceanside cafes sipping esspresso coffee and drawing.
Back then my main art tool was the ultra fine black sharpie.
I was into drawing what to me were guilts. Crisp black and white drawings done off the cuff. I drew a bunch of them.
Here's another one.

This morning's drawing.
One advantage to being an unknown artist is that whenever I sit down to draw I can draw whatever the hell I want.

I used to drink entirely too much. Not something I'm particularly proud of but it's just the truth.
I used to go out carousing with my friends on weekend nights terrorizing the Los Angeles metropolis in drunken drugged out all night insanities.
It was fun, actually. Later in life, it stopped being fun. But when we were young, going out at night and being crazy was great fun.
I made the above drawing after one such night with my comrade Johnny. We had left a string of terror down Sunset Blvd. that night, and after we got back to my place, in the wee small hours of the morning, Johnny passed out on my couch. There he sat like an angel, but trust me, behind that gentle face slept a maniac.
And me? I was never too drunk to draw.
A few minutes after I drew the above drawing I felt a bit looser so I drew another one that better captured the spirit.

Oh, for the record, I stopped drinking in 1995.
I had an appointment one morning with a judge who gave me a chilling ultimatum that scared the shit out of me and that I wisely heeded.
Cold turkey.
Thirty years now.
Sometimes I can't believe I survived my youth.
Thank you Judge Sawyer.

I live in a small city on an island in the Philippines. We own an old two story building with a store on the first floor facing the street. We live on the second floor. In our bedroom we have a huge bed where we all sleep, my wife, myself and our two children, lying together Filipino stye. The second floor has a long balcony that wraps around three sides of the building. We have the balcony filled with potted plants. My wife hangs our clothes out to dry on the balcony. The colorful clothing gently blowing in the wind is beautiful. This morning I sat out on the balcony with my coffee and watched the sun rise.

But first off, I'm not Steve.

My art arose from my doodling during class. I mean seriously, what else are you supposed to do during lectures? And you have a pen in your hand...
I later doodled at work. Same game different time zone.
So here are some doodles. I drew these particuar doodles at work. They were drawn with whatever pen I had at the moment on whatever paper was handy.
My ever present coffee cup staring at me on my office desk.
As a side note I have many things to be thankful for and coffee is high up o the list.
"Time to save time" God help us.
I like this one.
I like some of my doodles as much as my larger pieces. I drew this one on a Japanese post card. Not really sure why I had a Japanese post card.
I'll post more doodles later.
Cheers.

I was in a lecture once and the professor asked,
"Why are babies young?"
That's a pretty deep question if you think about it.
How is it that the weathered old cells of two adults can come together to create a fresh new life?
The professor went on to give a scientific explaination which to me just lost the plot.
To me, when conception occurs a new reality begins.
A new miracle.
A new chance.
