Text: I want you to know about… Autistic Shutdown

Autistic shutdown is like an internalized meltdown. While the person is experiencing a lot of emotions, they can’t express them outwardly.

It may look like this:

Zoning out

Exhaustion/falling asleep

Hiding/defensive position

How can allistic (non-autistic) folks help?

Safety first! Help them to a quiet space w minimal simuli

Be sensory sensible! Have a kit tailored to their need (eg ear defenders, stuffie or squishy and blanket)

Eliminate all expectations/demands. They are currently overloaded.

Reduce interaction, giving them time and space (shh..)

Remember:

Autistic shut-down is NOT stubborness, laziness or disrespect

Autistic shut-down IS involuntary, painful, exhausting Please be patient and compassionate.

u know when u scroll past a post because it’s talking about a serious topic? for example a national crisis in a different country or a donations post detailing abuse or just something triggering to you, because you don’t have the emotional capacity to deal with it at that exact moment? that’s okay. you don’t have to feel like a bad person just because a tumblr user said “don’t scroll!!!” you can scroll. if you know something will be triggering, you should never feel bad for skipping it.

A prayer for the protection of a person who is not accepted by their family but must live with them anyway.

I only offer the comfort that my goddess, Brighid, has taught me to give, but it’s yours:

May the mantle of Brighid wrap around you, bringing comfort and shelter, loving your self for what she is, for that self of yours is right and good.

May the hammer of Brighid ring out, ring true in your heart and mind, ring with a force that strikes lies and cruelty from the mouths of any who would curse you. Those words crumble like ash, while your heart glows with peace and self-love as a sword does when shaped on the anvil. 

May the song of Brighid pour through you, reminding you of your wisdom and courage, her beauty beckoning to your beauty, singing out the song of your true self, true in the same way your heart knows to beat, to sing “I am. I am. I am.”
