“This isn’t about beating him [Ultron], it’s about whether he’s right.” (About the Avengers being a threat to the world.)
Okay so tbh I don’t often rewatch the Avengers movies, but holy SHIT does Steve Rogers make my heart ache.
In the middle of all the shit that’s going down for him (and the world) in AoU, he does not for one SECOND forget that fighting isn’t about winning. It’s about correcting what was wrong before the fight and making things better after the fight. (If they win by putting people in danger and putting more evil into the world, then Ultron is right. And they haven’t won at all.)
THAT is Steven fucking Rogers. THAT’S the skinny kid who wouldn’t stand down. THAT’S why he’s not a perfect soldier (because a perfect soldier wins no matter what), but a good man (because a good man can see and remember what’s really important).
(Plus: that’s why he gives Tony the phone at the end of Civil War. Why he always cares about the civilians. Why he stands up against Thanos alone.)
(It’s not about winning, it’s about fixing what was broken. To Steve Rogers, breaking more things in order to win is losing.)
(And also why he wouldn’t fucking DO THAT at the end of Endgame.)
People forget that in the Disney fairy tale films, wishes and dreams represented hope: specifically, hope for a better future when current times were tough. The movies were made for people who lived through the Great Depression and Second World War. Snow White and Cinderella were survivors of abuse who wanted to be loved, Pinocchio wanted to become and be recognized as a real person, Bambi and Dumbo lost their mothers and had to find their own ways in the world. But these characters all held onto hope via their wishes and dreams.
So it feels a little demoralizing when modern Disney films try to deconstruct "wishes and dreams" as passive acts. They're trying to tell people to pick themselves up by the bootstraps, because nothing's gonna change unless you change something. Which is true, I guess.
But deconstructing wishes and dreams feels a bit like deconstructing hope itself. And maybe I'm reaching with that connection, but it doesn't sit right with me.
so I got into grad school today with my shitty 2.8 gpa and the moral of the story is reblog those good luck posts for the love of god
