I think the thing that shocks me the most about the discourse, if you can even call it that, around book Alicent vs show Alicent, is the idea that people think book Alicent had full autonomy over all her choices and she wasn’t a “victim” like show Alicent.

Now first, I put victim in quotations bc the way people who do not like her have almost bastardized that word. Alicent is a victim, and those things (rape, abuse, neglect) were done to her. That says everything about the men who did that do her and nothing about her. But people are hellbent on throwing Alicent, a woman in a violently patriarchal environment, being victimized back at people as if it is moral flaw of hers. Which is just terribly ironic bc the same folks who say Alicent “did it to herself” or “deserves what she is getting” also seem to think the crux of the story isn’t about generational trauma catching up with itself, how far people will go for power, or even how all girls and women are harmed - albeit to different degrees. But more the fact that Rhaenyra is the only woman to be harmed - and the only harm done is not getting the throne easily. Those same people wouldn’t be caught dead admitting that Rhaenyra is also a victim in the way they shit on Alicent for being. From the father who sets her up fail, to the baby daddy that’s been eyeing her since she was barely 18, to the uncle that grooms her. It takes away from the fantasy projected onto Rhaenyra if she too is surrounded by men that use her and she never escapes that.

Second, it’s funny how F&B gets heralded by some as this exploration of how history is skewed depending on who is telling it. But people can’t read between the lines (you honestly don’t even have to do that much work) with book Alicent. Showing 14 year old Alicent being preyed on, 16 year old Alicent being pregnant with her second child, and 18 year old Alicent being raped is somehow the show needlessly making Alicent a victim. But reading about a 13 year old bathing, dressing, and taking care of a king who mistakes her for the daughter he abused and neglected, and then that same girl, at 18, marrying another king that killed his previous child bride is just girl bossism on book Alicent’s part?

People hate conceptualizing the idea that (even book) Alicent is caught in patriarchal trappings bc to some that takes away from Rhaenyra’s plight…. Bc they can’t wrap their heads around several women *gasp* all going through hardships, and that ultimately people will respond to trauma differently depending on tools/knowledge they have at their disposal. Alicent neither being gleefully evil nor picking herself up by her bootstraps to somehow end years of patriarchal violence is not the neat box they want for her.

How could the Shanshu Prophecy NOT have been about Spike in Chosen?

The Prophecy states that a vampire with a soul would play a pivotal role in the apocalypse, and would be rewarded with becoming human when that happened. This was introduced in S1 of AtS, where it was also explicitely stated that the vampire in question isn't named, just that it's one with a soul. And since Angel was unique in that way, naturally it's assumed that he's the one they're referring to (but then why not name him if he was the only one it could apply to hmmm?) Wolfram and Hart took the extra step of research to learn that it was unclear whether the vampire would play a pivotal role on the side of good, or the side of evil, so they tried their darndest to get Angel on the side of evil through all five seasons.

But, hello? Angel has had a soul for a hundred and something years. And he's been through an apocalypse or two, first with Buffy, then on his own show. What's he been doing all this time? Which apocalypse are we talking about here? Lindsey claims the apocalypse has been going on all around them in Season 5, but the Buffyverse has always had clearly marked events signalling the end of the world that had to be prevented. The world being a mess is NOT an apocalypse in and of itself.

And then another vampire gets himself a soul, that could only have been forseen in prophecy, because he decided on his own to go and fight for it. After getting said soul, the First Evil immediately latched onto Spike and started grooming him, manipulating him, and brainwashing him into killing people. Random bystanders at first, probably testing to see if it could work on Buffy and her friends.

So Spike could very well have been on the side of evil in S7, if he didn't work so hard to resist the First's influence, if he didn't ask Buffy to help him, if he didn't break through his trigger. Or hell, even if he'd left town.

And then Angel is handed a mystical amulet and some info meant to help with whatever is going on in Sunnydale. He hands it over to Buffy and offers to be the champion in question, but she says no, and chooses Spike instead.

I'm not gonna get into the whole Spuffy side of this, haha, but S7 was about Buffy choosing Spike, every single time, in every aspect of her life, in love, and in battle. And this universe did originate with her, so she ought to be the one to determine this, within the confines of the show, anyway.

Spike takes it willingly, they both know he's probably going to die, Buffy does try to get him out of there when she sees he IS dying, and he stays, giving his life so that she and everyone else can live. His soul powers the amulet, his love sets their hands aflame, and his heroic act bathes him in sunlight before he's destroyed.

In the battle against THE FIRST EVIL. If I was gonna pick which apocalypse the Shanshu was talking about, I would choose one that had a villain called THAT. Plus it's Spike's first apocalypse with a soul, so that would also make sense that it's the one the Prophecy is referring to. No resting on his laurels for THIS vampire.

Except, instead, he dies and shows up on Angel's show disoriented and alone and without Buffy and with a complete 180 personality, battling with Angel on who the Prophecy is about, and you'll notice the show never does answer that question. Because Spike objectively makes the most sense. But it's not like they could make Angel play second fiddle ON HIS OWN SHOW.

No, what they should have done, is let the finale of Buffy cross over with Angel properly. Not just a cameo, but bring the whole Angel crew in, so that anyone watching the show would be forced to watch that specific episode of Buffy just to keep up with the story.

And Spike should have Shanshued. And Angel would have been disappointed, sure, but hey, he's BEEN human before. And he didn't like it. He even got a ring that made him impervious to harm. And he didn't like it. He loved Cordy more deeply (and more recently) than he ever loved Buffy. So it's not like he's really waiting for her anymore. Plus Cordy is part demon now, so Angel doesn't have to worry about not being enough for her. (Oh yeah, they should have brought Cordy out of her coma for this ending, to make any kind of cohesive sense).

But Spike... Spike was always more human to begin with. He may not have ever thought becoming human was on his bucket list, but he didn't think that about a soul either, until the time came where he needed it. He would LOVE to take Buffy out in the sun, and grow old with her, and give her the family and white picket fence that she's always secretly wanted and didn't think she could ever have. He would have still died, the same way soulless Spike died the minute he got a soul, but without all the heartbreak the canon ending gave us.

I'm partial to the stories where the Shanshu means some vamp powers like extra strength and healing remain, but those are just semantics.

As a cherry on top it would prove to anyone who's ever called it into question, and I include Buffy and Spike themselves on this list, that it's not that Buffy wants normal, nor is it that she wants a demon. She loves Spike for who he is, demon or not, human or not, but the soul and humanity would have helped him be the best version of himself, a man worthy of loving her and living with her, and after all the battles they've fought in their relationship to get here, it feels like it would have been kind of a sign that someone out there gives their blessing on this pairing. And Buffy could have said she loved him and chosen him AGAIN, in front of everyone, including Angel, and that would have been our endgame ending. (Though... to be honest if the comics still happened after this and Spuffy broke up at any point I would have been betrayed in a whole different way.)

And that's how BtVS could have ended. Angel could have gone on to have another season more or less the same, without any Spike or Buffy or Shanshu to speak of. And it could have ended EXACTLY the same.

The writing was literally so perfect and set it up for Spike so beautifully and unexpectedly. It wouldn't have even had to be a slap in the face for Angel because a. neither show was afraid of disrespecting a character at any point, and b. if it had been done on Buffy's show, it would have been less of a blow and made more sense, that Angel went back to BtVS to watch this unfold, where he wasn't the main character anyway. The Prophecy introduced on his show was really intended to be in service to hers, as any spinoff show ought to be.

Plus the episode title Chosen is such a beautiful one that has so many double and triple and quadruple meanings that one more would have been awesome.

So yeah. Those are my thoughts on the Shanshu this fine evening. Obviously many, many Spuffy fics (including my own) have given it to Spike or Angel or neither, all with their own reasons. And of course there's lots and lots of opinions on whether we would even want that for Spike, or if Spike and Buffy would want it.

But I think it just needed to be spelled out that from a writing standpoint, this would have made the most sense, and why.

Fanfiction was the friend I had when I was lonely, it never left me. Only inspired me.

Fanfiction is not "Eww... fanfiction".

Fanfiction is comfort after a long day. Fanfiction is hope when things aren't going so well. Fanfiction is exploring your emotions and sexuality in a safe place. Fanfiction is reaching out into a universe to discover things you never knew before. Fanfiction is discovering things about yourself that you were unsure of. Fanfiction is going on adventures. Fanfiction is walking when maybe you cannot. Fanfiction is standing up for yourself when it's hard to do in real life. Fanfiction is having the family you never had, the friends you always wanted, the love and affection you deserve. Fanfiction is letting out your frustrations and anger in a safe place. Fanfiction helps people. Readers and Writers alike.

Fanfiction is not "lesser writing".

Fanfiction is 100k stories about two dudes in a shiny black car. Fanfiction is 47 chapter epic tales about dragons and magic. Fanfiction is short stories that evoke such emotions that leave you crying for hours. Fanfiction is incredible prose that lingers in your mind for years to come.

Fanfiction is not shameful. It is not worthless. It is not just some silly thing kids do.

Fanfiction is beautiful art and no one can take that away from you. If they try, just write them into your next story and beat the hell out of them.

Everything in Twilight Saga that doesn't make sense to me

Stephanie Meyers' world just doesn't make sense to me.

Like at all.

So these are things that I think would make more sense about the lore of Twilight Saga.

The Wolf Pack - They're not werewolves or wolves. They're just not. Why Stephanie Meyer calls them that is stupid to me. And the thing is, its not just her. So many fanfictions I read call them werewolves. But they are shapeshifters. SHAPESHIFTERS.

Imprinting - It seems so ridiculous to me that Meyer creates imprinting. Especially given the fact that this generation of shifters are CHILDREN. They are literal children! Sam imprints on his girlfriend's cousin. Quil imprints on that cousin's 3-year-old niece! Jacob imprints of the hybrid child of the girl he claims he loves!! Imprinting has caused nothing but issues and ruined at least one relationship that we know of.

The Cullens and the Wolf Pack - The treaty between the 'werewolves' and the 'cold ones' is logical, yes. Especially when you considered the fact that the appearance of vampires is what causes the 'werewolf' gene to turn on. So, it would make sense that they have the treaty. However, I feel that it has not worked very well, given the fact that Jacob not only unknowingly breaks the treaty when he tells Bella the tribe stories (because he has a massive crush on her), but also, once he does become of the 'pack', he continuously pursues Bella, thus angering Edward (because who wouldn't be pissed off when someone continuously disrespects their relationship). And Jacob can do that. Because there's nothing in the treaty which prevents the shifters from deliberately antagonizing the vampires. Maybe I just have issues but if someone kept knowingly disrespecting my relationship, I'd be pissed. And if I were a vampire? I'd probably want to attack them and drain their blood. I imagine Edward thought about it but never actually did it.

The Cullens Sparkly Problem - They can't go out in sunlight. Because they sparkle. Sunlight is always present. Even at night. So, having to follow the rule of not exposing the secret to humans, surely it is a stupid vampiric evolutionary trait to SPARKLE in sunlight?!?!?!!

The Cullens and Human Food - This is one of many things about my issues with Stephanie Meyer's vampires. They are vampires. They have venom. Yet they have to essentially regurgitate human food back up? Logically thinking, would the venom in their saliva not act like an acid and literally dissolve any human food they consume - therefore eliminating the need to regurgitate food.

Edward's Attitude - His attitude. All of it. His misogyny. His gaslighting. His blatant dismissal of Bella's feelings, thoughts and opinions. It's very obvious that SMeyer puts in her own personal beliefs about relationships however it's also very obvious that SMeyer's personal beliefs about relationships are quite traditional, and give off the vibe of 'women should be seen but never heard'. I just don't fuck with that. At all.

Jasper's Background - Jasper Hale is a confederate soldier who joined the army during the Civil War, fighting on the side of those in favor of enslaving black people. But it's not just that. Jasper wasn't just a solider. He was a Major. According to the modern US army, it would take a minimum of 10 years service for Jasper to be considered for the rank of Major. Jasper Hale was 19. How good was he in the confederate army that he was given the rank of major after 2 years???

The Blatant Racism - Twilight Saga, as a whole, is incredibly racist (and misogynistic). It does not create a safe space for people of colour, or even anyone that doesn't fit a certain profile. Namely, the skinny, white people. Anyone who doesn't fit that profile does not have a safe space in the fandom. The representation for people of colour is severely lacking.

Humans - There seems to be an extreme lack of regard for humans. And to some degree, I do understand. Because it is a film series about vampires, they (usually) eat humans. When it comes to humans, Edward only seems to have any regard and basic respect for Bella, and Angela. And Bella appears to drop her new friends as soon as she starts dating Edward, only returning to them when Edward leaves. And for good reason, when she starts showing suicidal tendencies and a total lack of regard for not just her safety, but Jessica's too, Jessica totally freaks out. Any person would in those circumstances.

The Misogyny - Further on from Edward's misogyny and SMeyer's beliefs. Bella's 'I'm not like other girls' vibe and the stereotypes of the likes of Jessica, Rosalie, Lauren etc. Putting them in boxes. A box that states these girls are vapid, feminine, empty mean girls with no real contribution to conservation or friendship. When in truth, yes, Jessica may have been friends with Bella because she was new and shiny but at least she tried. She tried to be friends with Bella, the feelings obviously soured when Bella clearly didn't want to be friends with her, and dropped her like a hot potato when Edward reciprocated her feelings. Not to mention, when Jessica and Lauren's crushes seem to have all their attention on Bella. And it's not Bella's fault, but they don't see that. Because Jessica and Lauren are essentially still children. They are developing their brains, and they admittedly are unkind or rude sometimes, but at the end of the day, they are children. Children who make stupid mistakes, and notice how at no point, does anyone think to say anything. No one pulls them up? Why? Because they are in the box. And they are not allowed growth or development. They stay the mean girls because they aren't important.

The Misogyny Part 2 - Rosalie needs a whole other point. Because Rosalie Hale's story is crushing. It is crushing and heartbreaking, and Nikki Reed played the role with so much realness. Rosalie Hale is a New York socialite during the 1930s, who's family is not wrecked by the Great Depression. She is ignorant, she is unaware, and like most women of that time period and in that social standing, she does not have a lot of opportunities. Her opportunities are housewife and mother. She thinks this man loves her, she loves him, she wants nothing more than the perfect life with this man she loves and these perfect children she believes they will have. And it is ruined in one awful, traumatic evening. And the cherry on top of the cake, Carlisle finds Rosalie and changes her with the intent to make the perfect little mate for Edward. So, Rosalie, three days later, wakes up with an immortal life, a head full of traumatic memories of that night three days ago, and she is only there because Carlisle had the intent to give Edward a mate. And while Carlisle may have the best of intentions, Rosalie's story fills me with anger. And what makes it worse? Fast forward to Bella entering the picture, Rosalie has the love of her life, and she has endless beauty and she's jealous. And I truly believe her anger is so valid because it's not just about Bella being able to have children and Rosalie can't. No. It's Rosalie has to come to terms with the fact that this human girl gets to have more choice than Rosalie did. She gets to have the family vote. And Rosalie desperately wants Bella to have the option not to become a vampire. Because for Rosalie, becoming a vampire was both the best and worst thing she ever did. But all Bella sees, is Rosalie is angry, vain and jealous. Misogyny.

In conclusion, thank you for coming to my TedTalk. I will probably make a Part 2 when I think of more things I hate about Twilight and why they just don't make sense.

Thanksss :))) xx
