Probably the Naqada region - Clay plaster, resinous organic material, paint, malachite - Rogers Fund, 1907 (07.228.71) - This woman's face, narrow waist, and wide hips draw the viewer's attention. The emphasis on the lower body suggests figurines like this one functioned as fertility objects (see case between windows). The piece's light gray surface created an ideal canvas for painted details and the irregular black lines are the remains of tattoos, including a crossed circle under her mouth and a hoofed animal on her left shoulder. Her eyes were enhanced with green malachite and her hair was modeled separately using a mixture of resin and organic material. She wears red and green necklaces and unusual anklets.]
