Leo and Gavin see themselves as different kinds of men. Gavin feels uncomfortable in "straight guy" spaces like the auto parts store, and Leo feels more at home in those spaces. Leo fears violence from the police as a black man, whereas Gavin, a white man, does not. Yet they both find themselves shifting and balancing their masculinity as they move through different contexts - not wanting to seem too feminine or gay in some settings but not wanting to be too masculine either. Another thing that Leo and Gavin have in common is that they are both trans men, in this case men who were assigned female at birth, raised as girls, and then transitioned to live as men.

At the Philadelphia Trans Health Conference I had a short consultation with Dr. Crane following his workshop. I had another short consult with him last August during Gender Odyssey as well, so I had the chance to address questions I wasn’t able to prior.
