2014 Summer Valjean/Javert Exchange [x] Prompt: Pokemon AU
Gotta say I am both very dubious of, and fascinated by, the concept of a "Jean Valjean Prequel". like...are we gonna focus on the grueling poverty of his life as a peasant in the Ancien Regime? Are we going to watch as multiple generations of his family are literally killed by deprivation and overwork? See the faint echoes of the revolution from the POV of a family that is not at all involved in the politics ? Are we going to just...spend those 19 years he was in prison IN PRISON? Every beating and escape attempt? the casual corruption and cruelty of the officials and guards? Might we get sort of meta and see some riff on Claude Gueux play out there?
the thing is we do actually know what happens to JVV before the book starts and it's all bad, grindingly exhaustingly bad ; if they're committing to that then Respect, honestly, it's not like "poverty and prison are soul crushing" is less relevant these days
And/but if they're not committing to that...what the heck are they gonna do with it ??
The Three Grantaires
A little illustration I drew for my fic Drink to Forget.
I don't really wanna spoil it in regards to why there are three of them but I will say that the protagonist Grantaire is the one on the right, showing off his lovely little sutures. Hopefully for those who haven't read yet maybe this will entice a little I guess.
extremely funny btw. gavroche is like wait this adult is telling me i CAN smash streetlamps??? and valjean is like go wild kid. here's five dollars
I went to see Les Mis a few days ago! Here are my notes:
- Killian Donelly's Valjean, I think, fits so perfectly with Bradley Jaden's Javert. Killian is a little more harsh, a little more desperate to atone for his sins. He trembles when he holds those silver candlesticks, you could hear his desperate breaths. No matter how soft or how gentle he’s become, he is still so, so anxious and paranoid.
- But y know what? There was freedom when he saved Javert from the barricades. There was freedom when he grounds himself in his love for Cosette. There was freedom when he shows mercy and forgiveness. At the face of love and mercy, he is free and I FUCKING WENT INSANE
- Bardley Jaden’s Javert's transformation from start to finish is terrifying and I'll say it again. He was not so violent at first. He was composed, strong-willed. He held his nose high and looked down at everyone. He pitied Fantine and smiled at her, he looks to the audience with gentle eyes asking to be justified, asking for some kind of sympathy as if he was a saviour taking action so no one else should. It is such a contrast to Valjean's anxious nature.
- but Javert is capable of fear. I have never thought I would see a Javert so terrified of somehow being misunderstood, of being proven wrong for his ideals and principles. Normally, Javert is angry with his sights only on Valjean, but Bradley makes this character so fearful AND IT IS SCRUMPTIOUS. Almost near the end he's afraid of even Valjean's touch. He doesn't look at the audience, he looks up at the heavens instead.
Enjolras in Korean can be spelt with Ahn as the first letter, which works because Ahn can be a surname.
This awoke a memory for me of a jokey tale I told on ao3 many years ago:
Grantaire is Korean, and he is dating Enjolras. The problem is, Enjolras is White (and he's a man, but that was lowkey irrelevant lmaoo). This takes place in the late 80s/early 90s.
Grantaire tells his parents that he's dating Mx. Ahn.
You see, Grantaire had always wanted to date a foreigner, mainly because his father was very racist and Grantaire himself was seen as a burden on the family, a black sheep if you will.
So, to piss him off, he had dated many foreign men. Enjolras was the only one who was living in Korea and could speak some Korean.
When his family finally wished to see Mx. Ahn, Grantaire felt pressured to introduce him to the family.
All throughout the lead-up to this family introduction, Grantaire had never indicated that Enjolras was White (and a man, I suppose).
It wasn't until when Enjolras came through the door with a tiny whisky in hand did everybody find out on the day what kind of preferences their Grantaire had.
Enjolras knelt in front of the matriarch and poured whiskey for the drunk and disinterested father, and finally got accepted and was allowed to continue dating Grantaire.
You see, before this meeting, Enjolras was given a 'practice run', given how serious this meeting was going to be.
Éponine, a Japanese friend of Grantaire, decided to act as a ''matriarch'. She had asked Grantaire what she was supposed to do, and how she was supposed to act, and given her young age, really took a dramatic and comedic approach to her role as the matriarch.
She pointed at the cushion in which Enjolras was supposed to sit in, had a huge fan in her hand, and started being condescending and judging about him.
"You're a man." She said as she fanned.
"Yes, I think so."
"You're American."
"I'm French."
"What's your name?"
"Éponine, you know me."
"No I don't! I am Mrs. Kang, the head mistress of the household and you will address me as such! Where's the whiskey?"
He popped out a bottle into sight. Grantaire sighed in unison with the action. He had pushed for him to get a large bottle, and indicated, through mimes, to Éponine that she should remark on its size.
"Why is your gift so cheap?"
Enjolras glared at his boyfriend. "I am not getting drunk."
And so on.
An all too short TV commercial with rare footage of the first Canadian cast of Les Mis, 1989.
