This is really random and sorry for advance for bothering you but what are oyur thoughts on abused percy?
*hands you the Percy Jackson and the Olympians books*
It’s literally canon that Percy was abused as a child. So I’m not entirely sure what kind of thoughts I’m supposed to have on it - but, my own confusion aside, no you are of course not bothering me, dear anon!
It’s canon and I hate how much it’s being played down.
It’s one of the reasons why I hate Annabeth’s nickname for Percy, because that boy was abused for six years. Not just physically, also emotionally. Gabe belittling him and insulting him is a thing that happened, so I just… I just genuinely can’t see an abuse survivor who has been made fun of for his intelligence - not just by Gabe, but also by Nancy and other classmates and supposedly also by former teachers - would enjoy the constant reminder that one of his best friends thinks he‘s dumb, even as a joke.
It infuriates me that both canon and fanon tend to skip over it. Like, obviously all those years later, Percy does not dedicate every waking hour to it, but… acknowledgment? Please?
The boy has been through shit and shit started when he was six and his abuser moved in with him.
And, honestly, the fact that Sally flat out murdered him is an indication of how bad the abuse must have been. Sally is a good person, a gentle soul. If Gabe had really only been a foul smelling man, she wouldn’t have murdered him.
But the fact that Sally and Percy - Percy, the protagonist who tries to save everyone, including those on the Titans side during the war - team up and decide to murder this mortal… It really does speak of just how bad Gabe must have been, even if we never got any explicit depiction of the physical abuse.
I write about it really very frequently, actually. I usually make a point of mentioning it, mentioning that Percy was abused, that he confides in his lover about this, because it is a vital part of his past, of what shaped him as a person. He survived six years with that man.
I’m still a little confused on what thoughts you wanted to hear though, to be honest. It’s canon and I think there could/should have been more on how they deal with it, but as with every other serious issue, it’s rather brushed under the rug.
Percy: I tried to get a job as a marine biologist. They asked me what my merits were.
Percy: I told the interviewer I spoke fish.
What started as a joke between myself and @kings-dream became and actual thing that has an obscene amount of views and absolutely lovely feedback, please enjoy my ‘AFTG characters as vines’ compilation video (more AFTG and other books to come).
@korakos, please forgive me
anora (2024) thoughts
aaaahhh, sean baker let me kiss you on the mouth. this film had so much personality and humanity. it's both very loud and very quiet. you not only come to root for the protagonist, anora, but you feel so fucking bad for her by the end. and it's a really complicated cocktail of emotions. because she's framed as both triumphant, yet utterly defeated, and the movie doesn't let you sit comfortably with either position. it paints this young girl with such bold colors, yet also shows you the tragedy of having a bright spark, fighting hard to keep it alive, and being crushed by the world around you anyway
and still the film leaves you with a hopeful note that sometimes, someone does notice you. someone, a really unexpected person, will appreciate you. which is why igor/anora!!!! is so good. i love that he's such a soft oddball, but with a hint of menace. and the fact that he's the side character/goon you don't expect to have depths or connect with the plucky protagonist but he doooes, and they work so well. i love that in the end, in a sort of twisted bittersweet way, anora does get her fairytale. there are references to cinderella, and anora dreams of having her honeymoon at disney. but her "prince" turns out to be the guy with the henchman name, and that's so beautiful to me lol. (he even literally gives her a ring at the end!! they were insane for that)
and they really hit those lil romance notes, because he is always quietly looking out for her, quietly brooding in the background, being sad/upset on her behalf, impressed by the way she fights, amused but also disconcerted and worried!! gah. when he tells the family they should apologize to her. ROMANCE.
also this movie is really funny, like verging on farce a couple of times, and it shifts tone all the time, but always sticks the landing, so that the last scene still feels both sweet and devastating even after all the laughs. go watch it!!!
Interviewer: So Andrew, I heard that you learned how to play exy while in juvie. What made you decide to take up the sport? Especially at that time in your life.
Andrew, taking a careful sip of water: There are only so many things to do in juvie, [interviewer nods] and I already learned how to make a shiv and suck dick.
The interviewer, Andrew’s agent, his professional team PR department and GM and coach, the producers, the camera crew, that one random assistant, Kevin’s spirit, Wymack’s Minyard Senses:
