The Frozen Waterfalls of Hierve el Agua

Off the beaten path in Oaxaca, Mexico, two soaring cliffs resemble frozen waterfalls. Their name, Hierve el Agua (“the water boils”), stems from the warm mineral springs on the clifftops. As runoff from the pools flows over the cliffs, excess calcium carbonate in the water sculpts the rock. Ages of this process have resulted in the cliffs’ distinct appearance. Instagrammers visiting the cliffs have explored the bubbling turquoise pools and captured the view of the lush valley below.

Inspired by Justina Blakeney’s (@justinablakeney) #facethefoliage hashtag, Turkey Instagrammer Cansu Tüzan (@cnstzn) started to bring her portraits to life. Using everyday objects including flowers, seashells, metal scraps and jewelry, the student living in Gelibolu, Çanakkale, arranges objects on her desk before creating a character. “When I travel or walk anywhere, I am trying to look for all the details. I am always looking very carefully at everything as all the dried branches, flowers and leaves help me to create new characters.”

Cansu explains how she puts together each photo. “I try to shape hair and eyes, then I realize that the portrait is starting to look at me,” she says. “After I design the portrait, I wonder where it lives or whether the face belongs to a real person. Some of my followers claim my portraits look like their friends or relatives. This feeling makes me happy, as I am dreamer and I love showing my dreams through my works.”

While these may look like regular moss-covered rocks to you, they’re not - they’re actually a species of flowering plant called Azorella yareta, also known as Yareta. In order to survive the cold, windy, high-altitude conditions of the Andes, they live in tightly-packed colonies so dense that they are capable of supporting the weight of an adult human. They can also live to be thousands of years old - in fact, one of the oldest known plants on Earth is a 3,000-year-old Yareta plant. 

Because it is so dry and dense, it was traditionally used as a source of kindling, similar to peat moss. As a result of this, and the fact that it grows so slowly, Yareta is now a protected species in order to prevent its extinction in South America.

Na América: 1.900 hospitais; 5.400 dispensários; 50 leprosários; 3.700 asilos; 2.500 orfanatos; 4.200 jardins de infância. Na Oceania: 170 hospitais; 180 dispensários; 1 leprosário; 360 asilos;60 orfanatos; 90 jardins de infância.
