Ethel Cain + David Lynch by Theda Desmond
David Lynch explained that meditation, to him, was the mind ascending into complete consciousness. This theme is one of the most common recurrences throughout his entire body of work. To me, the visual of an orb ascending from within someone through their head is a representation of that. You can see such imagery in paintings, photography, lithographs, shorts he posted to YouTube, and most prominently, in Twin Peaks: The Return.
I feel that this runs parallel to Ethel Cainโs ideology of The Ring. Feeling the Pull through the Ring, experiencing the Sigh, and entering the Divine Theater where you meet your own personal God. In her video about the Ring, she lists off artists and songs that made her feel the Sigh. It made me think of the day I discovered David Lynch.
And so this crossover was created. Two ideologies by two different people that overlap tremendously.
