The Braiding Incident

Pair: Kate Bishop x Yelena Belova (platonic)

Summary: Yelena tries to braid Kate’s hair.

“OW!”

Kate immediately pulls away from Yelena. The two of them were in Kate’s apartment, sitting on her bed. The Russian spy was currently trying to braid Kate’s hair because it was in the way too much when they were training.

Yelena has been trying to teach Kate hand-to-hand combat in addition to her archery skills because, Kate will admit, if she loses her bow, she’s shit outta luck.

But while they were training, Kate’s hair kept flying all over the place and Yelena had just about had it.

“That is it. Go sit down, Kate Bishop, I am pulling your hair back.” Yelena says, playfully pushing Kate towards the bed to sit down on.

“It’s not as bad as you’re saying, Yelena. I’ve fought with my hair like this before, it’s nothing. I mean, it does kind of get distracting sometimes but -” Kate starts to ramble.

“One distraction will get you hurt and we can’t have that. Give me your head” Yelena says.

Kate starts to smirk.

“Why can’t I get hurt? I think getting hurt is quite fun.” She says, sitting down on the bed and letting Yelena start to comb through her hair.

Yelena scoffs.

“Don’t let Clint Barton hear you say that He’ll flip out. You’re lucky he is letting you keep this apartment instead of moving to his farm. My sister says he constantly wants to check and make sure you’re alright. Did he adopt you or something?” She asks.

Kate shrugs.

“I mean, basically. It’s pretty chill though. He and Laura are great and are always there for me, but still let me have my freedom because technically I am an adult.”

Yelena tugs Kate’s hair, pulling it tightly into a Dutch braid. Kate winces silently, but let’s her continue.

“Adult my ass. Just be happy they don’t have a baby monster somewhere here.”

Kate starts to chuckle. Sometimes Yelena says things wrong and it always makes Kate laugh.

“Do you mean baby monitor?”

Yelena tugs again, a bit harder this time as she gets the shape of the braid started.

“What did I say?”

Kate just shakes her head and Yelena shrugs, continuing to braid. Only not for much longer as after a particularly hard tug, Kate cries out.

“OW!”

Yelena stop braiding instantly.

“What is wrong, Kate?”

Yelena has this thing about hurting Kate. She never wants to cause her new friend pain, and whenever it happens, accidentally or not, she feels horrible.

“You were just braiding my hair a little tight there.”

“Oh. Well, that’s how braids are”

Kate stops there and turns to face Yelena. She notices how tight the girl’s own hair is braided and sighs.

“What do you say to letting me re-braid your hair?”

Yelena blinks, confused.

“Why? My hair is already braided?”

Kate shakes her head.

“Just trust me on this.”

And Yelena does.

Kate reaches forward and unwinds the incredibly tight braid in Yelena’s hair. She slowly starts to run her fingers through her friend’s long blonde hair, trying to work out any tangles that could have formed, and then gets to work.

“You see, not all braids need to be so tight. Let’s see this” Kate starts, beginning to pull Yelena’s hair into a way looser French braid.

“But wouldn’t it fall out? That will cause distraction.” Yelena asks, confused because this is all she’s ever known.

Kate nods.

“I know. But this is for when you are not fighting. Your hair does not need to be so tight when you are relaxing or hanging out with someone. Because during those times, it’s okay to have a few distractions.” Kate explains, kindly.

They don’t always have moments where Kate is reminded of Yelena being in the Red Room, but when they do, Kate is more than happy to help Yelena through that moment. Yelena doesn’t usually realize that some of the ideologies she has learned are not typical to people who haven’t been through the Red Room. This is an example.

Kate finishes the loose braid and pulls out her phone camera to show Yelena. There are a few strands pulled out of it that lay on either side.

“See? It looks good and it’s putting less pressure on your head. Whenever you’re not fighting, and need to pull your hair back, this could be helpful. It’ll keep your hair healthier.”

Yelena nods silently, taking in her image reflected back to her through Kate’s phone. She likes it.

“Okay, Kate Bishop.”

Then live with it. You did an awful thing, it doesn’t make you a terrible person.

The height difference is so cute like Kate is always kissing Yelena’s head/forehead and Yelena pretends to be annoyed but the one day Kate doesn’t give her any, she’s a grumpy little assassin!

Yelena would neverrrr ask for help to reach anything (relatable) and she’d climb all the counters before asking Kate for help!! I just imagine she’s halfway up the counter and Kate reaches behind her and grabs the thing she’s reaching without mentioning anything and Yelena is all grumbling “I can do it myself Kate Bishop” 🙄🙄 but she’s secretly grateful for her help

I think they would switch with big spoon/little spoon depending on their moods!! Like Yelena would love holding Kate close on her bad days, giving HER the forehead kisses for once and calling her all the sweetest names in Russian as she soothes her and when Kate’s the big spoon, it’s silent, knowing Yelena needs to just be held and appreciated 🥺🥺
