The Flammarion engraving is a wood engraving by an unknown artist that first appeared in Camille Flammarion's L'Atmosphère: Météorologie populaire (1888).

The image depicts a man crawling under the edge of the sky, depicted as if it were a solid hemisphere, to look at the mysterious Empyrean beyond. The caption underneath the engraving (not shown here) translates to "A medieval missionary tells that he has found the point where heaven and Earth meet..."

You have mirrors instead of eyes. If you had it your way, the Earth would be flat.

We’ll walk forever without ever meeting a second time.

We’ll walk away from each other until we fall right off the edge.

Poetic Surgery

I lay you down under the sun
where god can see you.

Someone hands me a scalpel
and I make the first incision—
right at the soft spot between
the third verse and the fourth.

You bleed. You open up like a flower
at the hands of a Summer child.
I have poetry in place of bandages
so I plaster the silence with free

verse because apart from being myself,
I’ve also grown tired of being locked up.
Years from now, they’ll finally find
a cure for our kind of sadness.

Until then, we’ll drink our pepper
mint tea and write lousy poetry.

BLACKBERRY WINTER

I like the simple pleasures of life:
The first bite into a ripe fruit, freshly plucked
from an overhanging branch
that was almost out of reach.
All you had to do was stand on the tip of your toes.

I like looking at the moon
through photographs you took.
How the angles tilt differently
from how I normally would see it.
How you artistically include the silhouette
of leaves from an unseen tree to frame each shot,
knowing I would mention it
and we’d have something new
to talk about in the next couple of minutes.
How I wish we could stretch this moment to an eternity.
