summary: what would making a gingerbread house with Shohei look like?
Huge shoutout to one of my closest moots here on Tumblr, @donttelltheelff, for giving me the inspiration for this short little blurb!
“Why does the apartment smell like cinnamon and ginger?” Shohei furrowed his eyebrows together as he stepped into the apartment to be bombarded with warm and spicy scents wafting throughout the area. He shrugged the black puffer jacket off his broad shoulders and hung it on the coat rack near the front door before he decided to investigate where the mystery smells were coming from.
Meanwhile, in the warm and cozy kitchen, you just pulled out the already baked slabs of gingerbread from a countertop nook you placed them on to dry out for a few days. “Okay, these feel like they’ve hardened quite a bit,” you mumbled under your breath as you gently pressed your finger on top of one of the rather large slabs of gingerbread. “I see I have to cut these into 9-inch squares for the walls and the roof of the house…” As you continued talking to yourself, your brain didn’t register the sounds of clattering and several curse words that were echoing through the walls of the apartment until you saw a familiar backside facing you.
“Shohei, babe, what are you doing?” Your eyes gazed up from looking at the decently cut gingerbread slabs to observe your boyfriend turn around and look at you with confusion glittering his eyes.
“Oh, so this is where those smells were coming from,” Shohei facepalmed himself on the forehead; a bright tint of red started to appear across his face as he failed to remember you were doing some sort of baking activity. “I was smelling ginger and cinnamon and I didn’t realize you were doing something for the holidays. Speaking of holidays…” The Japanese baseball player hopped on one of the barstools near the kitchen island and quietly observed you continuing to cut the gingerbread slabs. “What are you doing right now, Y/N?”
Shohei slightly tilted his head to the side as he took in the sights of the undecorated, toasty brown cookies and the bowls of icing and various toppings that were near you.
“I’m trying to make a gingerbread house from scratch,” your tongue sneakily poked out as you deeply concentrated on making sure you were doing well with the measurements and whether the building blocks were large enough for assembly. “Usually, I’d buy the DIY kits from the grocery store and do it that way, but I wanted to try something different this year and do it myself.” You mumbled under your breath as your gaze remained laser focused on what was in front of you; not wanting to incur any serious injuries with the sharp knife you carefully held onto.
“What’s a gingerbread house?” Shohei scratched at his cheek and pursed his lips together as he stared at you with a confused gaze. “I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a gingerbread house before…”
“Well, my adorably, slightly confused Sho, making gingerbread houses are one of the most popular traditions when it comes to the holidays,” you kept using short, strong sentences as you continued to cut albeit rock-hard gingerbread slabs. “It’s a very tedious and strenuous task, but the end result is completely worth it,” you had a soft smile on your face as you reminisced on memories of spending the holidays with your loved ones.
Shohei nodded his head and then pointed at the bowls of icing near him, “oh, what’s the colored icing for?” The Japanese baseball player wondered out loud as he tried to sneakily try to taste it but he was caught by you before he even had a chance.
“The icing is what glues the gingerbread together; plus, it also looks classy and elegant with snowflakes and snow and icicles, which can be made with icing.” You let out a tired huff as you put the knife next to you and stare at Shohei with a shy gaze, “my arms are starting to hurt from all the cutting… Could you help me out? Pretty please, Shohei?” You slightly jutted your bottom lip out and had a little pout on your face as you tried to woo Shohei into joining your festive tradition.
Shohei nodded his head and promptly hopped off the stool before he circumvented around the kitchen island and joined you in the kitchen, “ok, what do you want me to do, boss?” He jokingly teased you as he stared at you for further instructions.
“I want you to finish up cutting the rest of the slabs we need for the walls and roof of the house; I’ll handle transferring the icing from the bowl to the piping bags…”

“Well, it took us most of the day, but I think we finished it,” you had a tired smile on your face as you took the last photograph of the fully assembled gingerbread house you and Shohei worked on.
“Does this mean I can try the gingerbread now?” The Japanese baseball player stared at you with a gleaming smile on his face. You nodding your head gave him all the confirmation he needed and immediately tore off a piece of the roof. He took his first bite and munched on it before he feigned a smile, “I can see why people don’t like gingerbread…”

A/N: Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays in general! I took a little hiatus, mainly as I was getting swamped with college stuff and wanted to focus on that for a bit until my semester ended, plus I also had writing block for a while, hence this blurb isn't as long as my usual fics. Whatever is beautiful. Whatever is meaningful. Whatever brings you happiness. May it be yours this holiday season and throughout the coming year. Thank you for reading this blurb; I love y'all 🥺❤️

Old drawings that I never uploaded. I didn't have many ideas back then so I just copied photos and gave them more vivid colors. They are not finished and they never will be but I upload them so they don't go to waste.
