Basically an AU in which Lance and Keith become impromptu travel buddies and get into trouble.

Keith’s mentor, Krolia, has always warned him from the very beginning: show mercy to a vampire and you’re dead.  They’re snakes, they’re liars, they’ll kill you if you’re stupid enough to ever give them a chance.  As a beloved member of the Blade, Keith’s lived by this.  He’s never had any reason to question Krolia.  She’s always told him how his family was killed by them, after all.

Keith’s a good fighter.  Krolia’s trained him into the perfect weapon.  But when a newly turned vampire doesn’t fight back, Keith hesitates, and to hesitate is to be killed.  But the vampire doesn’t hurt him.  The vampire saves his life instead.  And from that moment on, Keith is gone.

Maybe vampires aren’t as bad as he thought.  Maybe Keith’s not who he thought he was.  Maybe Krolia’s been lying to him all along.

After losing the Grandfather who raised him, Shiro throws himself headlong back into life at the Garrison. Desperate to believe that everything is fine, Shiro focuses on his extra studies, on working as Commander Iverson’s TA, on anything but dealing with his grief or giving himself space to mourn. For the most part, his façade fools everybody. Unfortunately for his desire to avoid dealing with his problems, compartmentalizing and denial can only last so long before something has to give.

On the other hand is Keith. A driven cadet who’s earned everything that he has to his name, Keith sees Shiro as little more than a useless pretty boy whose family has a legacy with the Galaxy Garrison. As far as he knows, Shiro’s only gotten so far at the Garrison through a mix of dumb luck and nepotism. Keith’s perfectly content not to question any of his preconceived ideas about the Garrison’s resident golden boy. Unfortunately for his resolve, he keeps catching Shiro in vulnerable moments and spotting details that other people miss.

The Garrison has captured an alien.  It’s the very first time.

Shiro is sleeping peacefully in his room at the Garrison when it happens, bundled warmly in dreams as light explodes through the night sky and the ground quakes and quivers.  A mile away, in the darkness of the desert, a boy who’s not all human, but not all Galra either, stumbles from his shuttle, disorientated, looking for his father.  

He’s apprehended immediately and it’s up to Shiro to get him to tell them what he wants.

Gelatin in space!  Looks a bit like a tadpole when it is floating around, but I promise it was a tasty treat for us on the Space Station.  The food lab prepared drink bags with gelatin mix inside, and I made gelatin for the crew. It is very tempting to play with your food when it floats.

having a crush… is HARD.

Keith doesn’t get it. The guy never stops, never introduces himself or even says something simple like hello, he just waves whenever he sees Keith. The guy’s never close enough for Keith to get a good look at him, but there’s a shock of white hair across his forehead that you can’t really miss. Keith learns to look for it in crowds and wonders why he cares when he doesn’t see it. He tries to tell himself he gives no shits, but the fact is that he’s curious, too much to be able to leave it alone. Goddammit.

So the next time it happens—Keith has lost count of how often it’s been at this point—he detours from his route to the library and slips behind a tree, watching as the guy bids goodbye to the white-haired girl from a few days ago and walks toward the fountain.

Keith scrambles out from behind the tree. “Hey!” he calls, jogging after him. “Hey!”
