The Professor's Gift

I can't keep this Echo story out of my head. Please enjoy this sappy fluff.

Part One Part Two

Cid started skimming only a third of the tips rather than half which, while it didn’t present an opportunity to save, it did allow for a few extra credits to augment the bland dehydrated portions that left an echo of hunger each day. A small container of black hole pepper was the first acquisition and even the lightest sprinkle made the meal feel more civilized. At the sight of it, the Trandoshan clucked her tongue and rolled her eyes, muttering.

One or other of the boys would join in the nightly walk when they were around. However, Echo volunteered more frequently, and you’d meander together, hands brushing but not clasping no matter how badly the wanted to lest someone see— his insistence, not yours. Always taking different routes to that peaceful place lest someone notice a routine and get ideas.

Once sitting on the windowsill, you’d settle between his legs, leaning back into his chest. His arms would hold you close, and he’d occasionally kiss your temple while in deep discussion about one thing or another. Sometimes there was comfortable silence. It always ended with a long, slow kiss.

One night you’d insisted on swapping positions, wanting to treat him with the same gentleness. Initially, Echo had resisted but relented when it became obvious that you weren’t getting up from the sill. Tentatively, he sat and leaned against you, tense and self-conscious. Then you held him close and stroked his cheek and he melted.

“It doesn’t bother you?” he asked, touching the headpiece and gesturing to everything else that been done to him. “This?”

“No. Not at all,” you said softly.

Butterflies. A swarm in your stomach. You couldn’t wait for Cid’s annoyed wave that released you from the cantina. Omega and her brothers were around, and Echo had silently signaled that he would be the one joining the nightly walk. He and his siblings had been gone for a few weeks this time.

You’d hidden a little surprise near Echo’s Alcove – that’s what you’d privately named it – and were excited to share it.

Contrary to Cid’s and Echo’s brothers’ belief, you had some survival skills. Not necessarily skills that were helpful on Ord Mantell, but you could survive in a wilderness for a time. The entire reason was stubbornness and rage incited by another professor’s mocking challenge that you could not possibly make it more than a day on a mountain hike before being defeated and retreating to civilization.

The bet? He didn’t even offer terms if he won, confident that you’d fail. You demanded his speeder, then studied, taking notes that you'd brought on the journey. The journey that wound up lasting three weeks.

You got that speeder.

During the solitary walks through Ord Mantell, you’d salvaged this and that bit of detritus. A few credits were saved to purchase another bit of seasoning and a treat that, in another life, had been common but now felt extravagant.

“You seem . . . anxious,” Tech observed just before you and Echo departed the cantina, having noticed an uncharacteristic giddiness.

“Just eager to leave for a bit,” you said, throwing a bag over your shoulder. “Been a long day.”

“Been a slow day,” Cid muttered. That kriffing woman!

“Be careful,” Tech said. “Both of you.”

Echo had gotten comfortable enough to allow you to straddle him while he leaned against the window frame, both lost in a kiss that seemed like it could go on until every star in the galaxy burnt out.

“I made something for you. It’s not . . . I just wanted to—” you faltered, suddenly feeling embarrassed and silly.

After accepting that you genuinely weren’t going to recoil, Echo felt a little bolder and cupped your face with both hands, cherishing the smile that emerged when you felt his warm hand and his metal one at your cheeks.  

“What is it?”

You rose and went to the little nearby hideaway you’d found, took out what had been collected, and began assembling it into a makeshift grille while sitting on the floor. From the bag came a fresh nuna leg and the two tiny containers of seasoning.

“I always liked to cook,” you said quietly. “It’s not much, but I wanted to do something nice for you.”

Echo gazed down at you sprinkling the scantest bit of seasoning on the little nuna leg. He understood that you were basically an indentured servant to Cid and that understanding had begun to dig into his chest at the sight of the Trandoshan woman. You had so little, yet you’d spent some of it to cook for him.

You glanced up to see Echo’s eyes glistening and ready to spill over.

“Echo? Are you— I’m sorry,” you wavered, worried that somehow this reminded him of something hurtful. “I didn’t mean to—"

“No! This is—,” he stopped short and moved to sit on the floor next to you, taking your hands in his. “No one has ever . . . –Thank you.”

Echo looked happy and it was the most beautiful sight you’d ever seen.

Okay I have a very short and sweet rambling thing that I have to get out of my head:

When Echo first joins he’s not exactly sure how much of his personality he should show. He keeps a bit more to himself, he’s confined himself to a box. He has a list of stories he’s able to tell without too many questions and without anything too close to home threatening the fragile wall he’s built up. He avoids too many late night conversations and won’t drink enough to get any more than slightly buzzed so he doesn’t let any carefully guarded secrets out. He’s not subtle, they all see what he’s doing, but he keeps it up for awhile and they let him have his privacy. It was only a week or two before it started to slip out. It’s a comment egging Wrecker on when the big guy clearly wants to cause a bit of trouble or blow something up unnecessarily. Or the sass he throws right back at Crosshair when the sniper is getting too cocky. Or how he sidles up to Tech and asks “do you want to see how much we can modify the caf pot before it catches fire?” But really. He’s tip toeing. Specifically around his CO. He doesn’t know why, but he just can’t seem to let himself just be. But then, miraculously, there it is. It’s a sarcastic remark he can’t bite back that is aimed directly at Hunter. Hunter, who pauses and looks over at him, careful not to let his expression give him away.

“What did you just say?” Hunter challenges. Now, unfortunately, the whole squad has eyes on him and he’s trying not to panic. Did he overstep? Was Hunter angry at him? He’s frozen as Hunter makes his way over to him, tipping his head a bit and looking him over with a mischievous glint in his eyes. “Go ahead. Say it again.” Echo kind of wants to throw up? Run? Anything but stand there in the middle of the ship with everyone watching him and waiting for him to get reprimanded. But who is he if not stubborn? So he does. He says it again. And to his horror, his absolute horror, Hunter smiles.

And it’s the same look Rex always gave him when he was being a little shit and needed to be knocked down a peg. A look so familiar it almost reminds him that when Rex used to give him that look he used to run as fast as he could before the captain could do anything. Because when Rex caught up to him, and oh he always did, he’d have to endure the big brother side of Rex. The side that kept him trapped in a headlock until he tapped out. The side that wrestled him to the ground and tickled him to pieces. The side that lifted him over his shoulder and tossed him into lakes and absolutely destroyed him in pillow fights and never once let him win a wrestling match.

That look, the one that told him he was about to get messed with, was being aimed at him and he didn’t even register it until Hunter went to reach for him and he instinctually took off. It took maybe ten seconds for Hunter to catch him but, in his defense, the ship is small. He does have to endure the same playful punishment from Hunter that he had to from Rex. And he’s, truthfully, kind of happy about it. Yes, Hunter will find new, creative ways to annoy him or get him back for all the sarcastic comments. Hunter will even make sure to double down when he’s too stubborn to admit defeat, convincing the rest of the batch to gang up on Echo with him. But it means he’s falling into rhythms he didn’t know would ever be possible again. It means he still has brothers, after everything. He never holds his tongue again. He throws things, and is loud, and petty, and he gets up to things he knows he shouldn’t. He bickers with Crosshair and helps Wrecker get away with sneaking extra fire power onto the ship, and helps Tech hack things they should leave alone. And he sends his best “I’m totally innocent” smile Hunter’s way when he gets caught (even if Hunter never falls for it). Because he’s comfortable now. And he’s thrilled. And so are all of the batch.

Avi started working with medical clinics at the start of the Clone Wars, and Thorn was one of the troopers assigned to protect the clinic from gangs like the Black Sun!!

When I saw him in the trailers and clips, I felt like he got a bit bigger. Not too much! But his cheeks aren’t SO HOLLOW anymore imo.

When I first saw the trailer- I couldn’t help but think he was getting healthier 🤔 I do wish his skin tone would start darkening but it is only 6 months from the first season. idk if the team is slowly working on his physical condition.

Either way! I love your epiphany! <3 My man can squeeze me like a watermelon with that arm 🥹

ECHO EPIPHANY

Did I have a sudden realisation about something from staring at Echo... maybe.🫣

So a few hours ago I made a post about something I noticed in the new character poster of Echo. For ages I've thought that he cut two triangles out of his chest plate because it looked cool.

And then I realised that it's not a hole. It's a red piece that has been welded in on either side. But then what I couldn't work out was why?

Why would he cut it out and weld it in again? Why would he not just paint that bit a different colour without removing it? Why is he the only one with a welded chest plate? It's so much effort to go through. Why is it like that? I thought it may have just been to change the shape slightly but it doesn't seem to fit any different.

And then something hit me when I was looking at this pic.

I was just going through the process of trying to work out why they might be wearing these outfits when I suddenly thought

Has Echo bulked out?!

Like, it may just be because he normally has more armour covering him but I remember him being slightly more slender. Like???

Did he always have that much muscle???

But that made me think. Is the reason Echo has a modified chest plate because he's gained weight?

At the point of S1, Echo had only been with The Batch a short time, maybe a couple of months, and we know how emaciated Echo was after Skako. It wouldn't have been a whole lot of time for him to go back to his typical physique, especially since he'd have to get used to eating properly again.

Now that we're a few months on from that, Echo's probably not only put on some weight, but also built up a lot of his muscle again. Which also means his body shape has changed. The armour is rigid, so the only way to make it fit is to either get a new piece, or modify the current one.

Seeing as they're on the run, and that The GAR doesn't exist anymore, Echo can't get a new piece. What he can do though is change his current set. There's a chance that the reason he's got these random bits welded in is to accommodate for the new mass. It would also explain why he's the only one with modified armour.

Now I will be the first to put my hands up and say that this is a reach and that I am probably looking way too hard into this, but it makes sense??? It explains why his chest plate is like that.

This is probably irrelevant to anything but it was an interesting realisation.

Seeing his neck makes me go feral!! 👀

I've got a couple of predictions...

One: Omega's kaleidoscope will show up in the hands of one of the other Batchers at some point, looking through the eyepiece with the childlike wonder they didn't get to experience growing up.

Two: Ronar's nickname for Tech means that he will show up later on in the series. He will call out "Ace" when he sees Tech, and Tech will turn around and be very pleased to see him.
