December 11th 1936: Edward VIII abdicates

On this day in 1936, Edward VIII’s abdication of the throne of Great Britain became effective, when Parliament voted to recognise his Instrument of Abdication, signed the previous day. The King, who succeeded his father King George V, abdicated due to his intention to marry Wallis Simpson, a twice-divorced American socialite. The Church of England did not allow divorced people to remarry, and, as the sovereign is head of the Church, Edward could not marry Simpson and keep the throne. Choosing his lover over the throne, Edward decided to renounce the crown and pass it on to his younger brother Albert. Edward reigned as king for 326 days before the abdication, but was never officially crowned; he is the only British monarch to have voluntarily renounced the throne since the Anglo-Saxon period. Albert, who suffered from a stutter and was very reluctant to take the throne, became King George VI, and was one of Britain’s most popular monarchs as he led the nation through the dark days of the Second World War. George VI died in 1952, passing the throne to his daughter Elizabeth, who remains Queen today.

Rosemary’s Baby (1968), directed by Roman Polanski and adapted from Ira Levin’s novel of the same name, is the story of… well, Rosemary (Mia Farrow), a quiet housewife who finds herself in for a hellish nine months when she learns that she’s pregnant. As the weeks roll on, she begins to notice dramatic, concerning changes in both her health and the behavior of the people around her, causing poor Rosemary’s world to spiral slowly into madness as she starts to suspect that something diabolical is afoot…

A movie that must be seen to be believed, Rosemary’s Baby plunges its victims into the deepest depths of an ocean of paranoia. Nothing is ever quite as it seems and not one person Rosemary encounters ever seems totally on the level. Everyone is fair game as the film twists and turns, contorting itself and its characters in just the right ways to keep you on your toes. It’s a horror movie that challenges its audience not simply to endure but to think, instilling viewers with a wicked sense of uncertainty that just builds and builds until it reaches a fever pitch when the film finally lets you in on its sinister secrets.

Simply put, you won’t find many horror movies that get under your skin like Rosemary’s Baby. Great writing, direction, and acting all conspire to make this gem feel delightfully evil. It’s required viewing for any horror fan.

Dear Black women of the world

Some of these niggas on Twitter make black men look bad by trying to make y'all look bad. Their ignorance, cowardice and stupidity baffles me. They act like their mothers, sisters, aunts, and cousins aren’t black. They should be Ashamed for themselves.

I know it must be difficult for you in a world that sees you as not just one minority but two. Like its not bad enough that your black but you’re a woman too. Double the hate. Double the prejudice.

Please though, I beg of you don’t give up on us yet. There are still men out there that see you as the strong, independent, intelligent, beautiful women that you are. We love you for it. Dark skinned, light skinned, brown skinned it doesn’t matter we love you all. You are all queens and should be treated as such. I apologize on the behalf on my misguided brothers who don’t understand. Just know there’s still some of us out there who see you as you are. Not as society, or social media portrays you.
