A 13-year-old girl in Britain is the latest student to be removed from class because of her hairstyle. Amanda Sutcliffe was put in “isolation” after she showed up with her hair in cornrows.
Before the teen had her hair done while on vacation with her family in Turkey, Sutcliffe checked to confirm that the hairstyle was not listed as banned under the school’s dress code. When she returned to class, the teachers found that the style did violate the code because it was “extreme,” reports The Mirror….

Enhanced Oil Recovery by polymer injection
Polymer to control the mobility of injected water has been employed for many years in Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) applications.
Polymer flooding to improve volumetric sweep efficiency and reduce channeling and breakthrough, has been used by many operators to increase oil recovery. The same polymer can also be used with surfactants and alkali agents to increase the sweep efficiency of these tertiary recovery floods (i.e., ASP, SP and AP). Polymer flooding can yield a significant increase in oil recovery when compared to conventional water flooding techniques. A typical polymer flood project involves mixing and injecting polymer over an extended period of time until a slug volume equal to about 1/3 of the reservoir pore volume has been injected. This polymer slug is then followed by continued long term water flooding to drive the polymer slug and the oil bank in front of it towards the production wells. Polymer is injected continuously over a period of years to reach the desired injected pore volume. The end result being more oil produced in less time.
On this day in 1936, Edward VIII’s abdication of the throne of Great Britain became effective, when Parliament voted to recognise his Instrument of Abdication, signed the previous day. The King, who succeeded his father King George V, abdicated due to his intention to marry Wallis Simpson, a twice-divorced American socialite. The Church of England did not allow divorced people to remarry, and, as the sovereign is head of the Church, Edward could not marry Simpson and keep the throne. Choosing his lover over the throne, Edward decided to renounce the crown and pass it on to his younger brother Albert. Edward reigned as king for 326 days before the abdication, but was never officially crowned; he is the only British monarch to have voluntarily renounced the throne since the Anglo-Saxon period. Albert, who suffered from a stutter and was very reluctant to take the throne, became King George VI, and was one of Britain’s most popular monarchs as he led the nation through the dark days of the Second World War. George VI died in 1952, passing the throne to his daughter Elizabeth, who remains Queen today.
Have you seen the New Yorker article recently posted entitled, "Broken, Defaced, Unseen: The Hidden Black Females of Western Art" by Robin Coste Lewis?
[“The Voyage of the Sable Venus from Angola to the West Indies,” a wood engraving by W. Grainger after T. Stothard.]
I had not seen or read this yet, and I’m so grateful you’ve brought it to my attention.
The entire article is an incredibly moving meditation on the life-transforming powers of art and research.
