not one thing about this is straight, my friend
Loads of people are saying that the people that weren’t happy about Steve’s ending are selfish because he’s happy with Peggy and that we’re just not happy because our ships aren’t canon.
That’s not it. I am not happy because throughout every Captain America movie Steve has fought for one thing mostly. And that’s Bucky. In the First Avenger, he goes on his first real mission for Bucky. To save Bucky. Then Bucky ‘dies’. He becomes more reckless after that, even driving himself into the arctic, despite the fact he could have had a life with Peggy still. We’ve seen him jump out of a plane without a parachute, so he could’ve still crashed the plane without sacrificing himself. Basically, he couldn’t imagine a life without Bucky.
In the Winter Solider. Cap is 100% ready to fight the WS until he realises it’s his best buddy, old pal, Bucky fucking Barnes who he immediately almost dies to protect, even when the same guy’s trying to literally kill him.
And in Civil War he literally starts a war with his own team to save Bucky. He drops his shield when Tony says it’s no longer his and walks off with Bucky without even looking back. He just let go of his legacy for his best friend. He was with him when he went into Cryo and fell to his knees when he dusted. Bucky has been there with him through everything for basically 100 years by Endgame. 2012 Steve even stopped fighting Endgame Steve when he told him Bucky was alive. Nothing about Peggy. It was Bucky.
And you’re telling me that I’m wrong for wanting him to at least ask if Bucky, the person he’d fought wars with and went to war for, wanted to come with him when he left? Are you shitting me? I am unhappy because they used to say ‘Till the end of the line’ and suddenly Endgame acted like none of that ever happened. I’m unhappy because it was so outside of Steve Roger’s character that it felt like Loki did a better job impersonating 2012 him at that point. Loads of the character’s were off. I’m not saying this as a shipper. I am saying this as someone whose favourite characters were Steve and Bucky, and at the end of their apparent line, didn’t even get a reunion in Endgame after Bucky came back. They shared two lines. That’s it. All that. For two lines. Steve got his apparent happy ending without a big factor of happiness that has been with him throughout his life. How can he be happy without Bucky when all the Cap MCU movies have told us he isn’t? We’re not even told if he rescued Bucky from Hydra in the alternate timeline he created, so we don’t know if he is in his life. I’m sorry it makes me ‘selfish’ to be so unsatisfied that one of the best friendships in the entire MCU ended like this. With. Two. Lines.
You want to know what I do say as both a shipper and as a queer person?
I say I am heartbroken. Marvel had the best chance they’d ever have at creating the first queer couple in the MCU multiple times and ignored it. (No offence to Stony shippers.) Over Twenty films, and eleven years and the only queer rep we have is a single seen in Endgame. That barely last two minutes. And it’s not even an on-screen queer couple. Even after they Tweeted saying it had a gay character. I knew not to get my hopes up, but I still thought it’d be more than a background character for two minutes. I’d hoped it’d at least be Carol and Valkyrie maybe, since Brie Larson and Tessa Thompson both loved the idea, maybe they’d sneak a tiny little line between the character’s at least. But nothing. They had so many chances with Stucky, due to Peggy being gone and the general relationship chemistry Steve and Bucky had that could have easily developed into something more than platonic, I’d say Stony but Pepper was always there (Not that I mind, I love her so much) and they’d been together since before Cap was even a thing in the MCU, they already had the backing for this from the public with the GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend trend. Chris Evan’s Brother is gay so I thought Chris himself wouldn’t even mind this. They had Valkyrie, who is bi, but the one scene where she was announced as Bisexual was cut, I wonder why. They had the chance to make Maria and Carol more than friends, I mean really, there was so much subtext it would’ve been so easy. Nothing. You know what this teaches queer kids and the bullies that pick on them? That queer kids don’t get to be heroes. They only deserve to be background characters, whose spouse’s die anyway.
“But there are LGBT+ characters in the Marvel comics!” Many people who love the MCU don’t read the comics. Many children who watch the MCU movies don’t read the comics. Not only are comics themselves expensive, and it’s financially hard to by every issue, but it’s hard to get into comics. Marvel has been here for a long time, there’s literally decades worth of confusing overlaps and loop holes that don’t make sense. The MCU was an easy and quick way to introduce yourself into the fandom and for many people it worked. They aimed to make heroes a type of mainstream media and it worked. Almost everyone has seen an MCU movie. The majority of teens and kids now have been/are being raised watching the MCU movies. It is just as important to see representation in the movies and on the TV shows as it is in the comics. Queer kids would finally get to see themselves as heroes and see themselves in their favourite characters. Children and teens seeing Endgame (If it had had real queer representation) would have seen a hero as queer and know it was okay. Thus know that it’s okay themselves to be queer, or that queer people around them were normal and part of everyday life, which could’ve led to kids who have seen it less likely to become bullies towards queer kids in future, or even stop them if they had already been bullying them.
“They aren’t canon in the comics!” Did Bruce and Nat ever get together in the comics? They did on screen, despite the majority of people disagreeing with that ship. Yet a lot of people also did like Stucky, though. Still didn’t happen. MCU Marvel seemed to have a whole thing with starting relationships that either made
A) No sense (E.g. Nat and Bruce)
B) Came out of nowhere (Clint and Laura. He never had a family before Age of Ultron. I only forgive this because dammit I love Clint and his fam.)
C) Ended up just disappearing/dying/breaking up, ect. (E.g. Jane and Thor, Wanda and Vision, Gamora and Peter Q, with the newest addition as Pepper and Tony, despite these ones being the ones people actually liked as far as I know. It’s almost like Marvel doesn’t want us to ship anymore)
You’re telling me out of all these ships, it’s Steggy that survived everything. (No offence to Steggy shippers. I used to ship it too.) It’s just been so long since Steve and Peggy were together (Which is why I stopped shipping it, and eventually started to like Stucky.) and yet it’s the only relationship that survives other than Hope and Scott. (From the top of my head)
Besides, the MCU isn’t the best with always adapting things from the comics, are they? In other words, Clint should be deaf. Deaf kids should get to see themselves as their favourite heroes just as much as queer kids.
(Gonna get personal now so trigger warning) I genuinely keep getting brought to tears over this because I was bullied for being queer and if it wasn’t for the bullying, I probably wouldn’t have ever self harmed so seriously, developed severe depression or tried to take my own life. I know I talk so much about representation but this is why. If I would have had that when I was growing, I may not have been bullied, I may not have been so upset with everything and myself. I finally thought, with every ounce of hope, maybe that Tweet had meant something more than just a cameo from a director and they had a surprise. But it was just bait. I don’t need that representation for myself as much anymore, but kids today still need it. The ones still growing and figuring themselves out so they don’t turn out like me and like so many other damaged queer people. It would have been huge to have it in the MCU, really have it. But apparently they don’t want to get sued by any homophobic parents for ‘adult content’. Queer lives are not adult content. Your kid who you’re so desperately trying to protect from seeing an LGBT character on screen could be queer themselves and not only does not having rep to grow up with damaging, you stopping them from seeing rep almost like it’s poison to ‘make them gay’ is even more damaging.
“They could still have queer content in future MCU movies! You’re over reacting!” Am I? Think of how much time has gone into creating this universe of screen. Now let’s focus on how, despite how much screen time there has been for a potential queer couple, there has never been one. Look me in the eye and tell me the MCU is ever going to be the same? The golden era isn’t over? It didn’t die with Tony Stark, the one who built it from the ground up in that cave. Tell me it’ll be the same as seeing a queer couple in the MCU ATS (After Tony Stark) as it was BTS (Before Tony Stark, well, his death).
“What about Deadpool?!”
The movies are 18s. No kid is going to be able to find representation there. Yes Deadpool openly flirts with everyone, regardless of gender, and is obviously Pan, yes there is an on-screen queer couple, but it is not for kids. Kids who need that rep the most. Moreover, the Sony/Disney merge only just happened. I am not counting that franchise as part of the rest of the MCU I am talking about in this post. Until there is a Deadpool movie in the MCU I am talking about here, that’s kid-friendly, don’t tell me it counts. The same goes for the other Sony Marvel movies, like Venom.
Anyway, back to my original point-
Steve fell in love with Peggy, when I was younger and when I first saw the First Avenger I thought they were amazing together and cried when he was in the plane, and was all ‘Save me a dance’. But that was eight years ago. Yes, we’ve seen scenes throughout the MCU where Steve still grieved Peggy, especially after her death. But he knew her for a few months, and I don’t think he actually loved her as much compared to Bucky. He was ready to throw away a life with her because Bucky wasn’t going to be in it, and you’re telling me he’s ready to switch that around now? Choose a life with Peggy instead when Bucky’s alive? The complete opposite of what he did the first time round? Not to mention, he literally dated her niece, meaning that he, in his new found alternate timeline, is her uncle. Think about how weird that is for just a second.
Anyway, he’s spent his whole life with Bucky, he spent a few months with Peggy when he was training, fighting, ect. And you’re telling me, though all the times it’s been shown he can’t live a life without Bucky, he’s leaving him? Idc if he goes back in time and stops alternate timeline Bucky being the WS, Idc because that’s not his Bucky, the one he left behind who he fought for on countless ocassions. It’s not the same broken Bucky and the same damaged Steve who have learned to love each other still, despite all of their mistakes and flaws. And in the end it’s still implied he married Peggy. So, no, I am not happy. Again, I’m sorry I am so very ‘selfish’.
I am absolutely LIVING for the content from the premier and I am LOVING each and every picture they have posted on their accounts. But this video sealed the deal for me.
Also the fact that MTV posted this with the particular audio. Why hurt us like this 🫠
