POV: You’re Basil

If angst was a flavor, what do you think it’d taste like?

I personally think it’d taste like chocolate-chip cookie dough with the salt in the mixture being from tears

Basically, it’d taste like whatever food you’d eat straight out of the container while crying and watching you favorite show after a breakup or smth

Okay so I know a lot of people argue that Basil dying a lot in Blackspace means Sunny hates Basil (I think that was what you were referring to by saying Basil was killed constantly? Sorry if I misinterpreted that TvT). HOWEVER, I actually think there’s a lot of evidence to support that it means he cares for Basil a lot, and can be interpreted as repressed (romantic and/or platonic). In Blackspace, you still play as Omori. I’d like to address the spider-room death first. Basil starts being swarmed and covered in spiders, and eventually cries out to Omori for help. Omori backs away from Basil, and Basil disappears as the spiders presumably consume him. Notably, Omori is the one in control here. In the game, we play as Sunny; anytime we lose control of the Omori character, it presumably means that Sunny also does not have conscious control over Omori. Another thing that might be worth mentioning, is that although Omori technically overcame his fear of spiders in headspace, this is no longer headspace. This bit is more up to speculative, but it can be interpreted that Omori was too scared to save Basil from the spiders because he himself was scared of them. In which case, this death could also be interpreted as Sunny’s own fear causing pain for the people he cares about, something that we see at other points in the game.

Another particular Basil death that might be worth addressing, is the one in the glitched Neighbor’s room, where the headspace friends turn on him, and he cries to Omori for help before Aubrey hits him with her bat. To me, this very much doesn’t read as Sunny wanting Basil to die. It feels a lot more like he’s helpless to do anything- Because yet again, at that moment, we cannot control Omori anymore, and neither can Sunny. He doesn’t want Basil to die; he just feels powerless to do anything about it. Also, the many possibly interpretations of Aubrey being the one to unalive Basil here. I do think that Aubrey hitting him with her bat is likely a nod to the fact that she’s been bullying Basil in the real world. Even more fuel that Sunny feels helpless to save Basil from being hurt for Sunny’s own actions (Mari’s death, scribbling out the photos). Another possible interpretation (and one that is, admittedly, a lot less likely), is that it’s Sunny’s idolized crush, that he’s held onto for so long, is trying push down and get rid of the crush he has on Basil. It could possibly be taken as a sign of repressed feelings for Basil, whether that be because he hasn’t accepted his bisexuality (or whatever your personal headcanon may be), or he’s simply scared of letting go of his old crush.

There’s a lot more Blackspace stuff I could go into, but this is really long already aaand I’m in class TvT

it doesn’t even have to be romantic, it just feels like a soulmate thing! like Sunny and Basil are tied together after this single incident, they will always be intertwined after that day

they may not have been known it, but they are so heavily intertwined together that even Sunny’s subconscious picked up on it. even coping mechanism calls out how the two are connected.

it’s like - sir, the mixed signals of killing Basil constantly but then essentially using soulmate theory? do you hate him or want to kiss him? (/j)

also, with that joke, i do actually ship Sunflower, and this line speaks to the hopeless romantic in me to some degree - because what do you mean Sunny thinks “a string of fate” ties them together? like it’s super dark, but also kinda gay. just slightly.

anyways, the Branch Coral was super cool and i love the slight soulmate implications on Basil and Sunny even though it’s super screwed up!

Fun fact about me is that one of my favorite fanfiction tropes is Hanahaki disease- For those of you who don’t know what that is, ‘Hanahaki’ translates to ‘flower-spitting’. It’s caused by unrequited love. A flowering plant will begin to grow in the victim’s lungs, and they cough up flowers as the plant slowly grows. The only cure is to confess, and if they don’t, or if they get rejected? The victim will succumb to the hanahaki. The time frame the person has between the start of the plant’s growth and death depends on the AU.

Overall it all just very much reminds me of Basil but I haven’t been able to find many fanfictions or fanarts with hanahaki Basil, though I may just be looking in the wrong places TvT

Edit: I found out that apparently Polly says that Basil lived with his grandma since he was a toddler so I did end up editing this post TvT

Currently, my timeline idea of the wilted flower theory is: 

   Basil's parents were never really around. We don't know his exact backstory of history with them, but he’s been living with his grandma since he was a toddler. It’s HEAVILY implied that Basil didn’t have many or any friends until the friend group sort of took him in. As someone who struggled a lot with friendships around the same age as Basil would’ve been, that really does make you feel lonely. He had his grandma, of course, but I can imagine it’d still be hard without his parents. This bit is more speculation, but that might’ve partially led to his apparent fear of abandonment. 

   Little Basil is friendless. Maybe even bullied at the time- after all, it’s a small town that’s very religious, and Basil isn’t exactly the definition of masculinity. There’s a possibility that could’ve led to bullying, though I have no real evidence for that. His parents aren’t around, and he has no friends. Especially at his age in development, that could easily lead to feelings of loneliness and depression. Not to mention, we still don’t fully know what Basil’s relationship with his grandma was like, even if it was a good one. All of this combined could very well lead to su!c!dal thoughts. Big traumas aren’t the only thing that can cause mental illness. 

   So when the friend group takes Basil in, he’s finally found people who don’t make him feel so lonely. They’re people who love and accept him like family. He’s especially close to Sunny, who makes him feel listened to. We can clearly see the bond they have, whether platonic or romantic- in the majority of the Basil’s photos and the scenes we see in the Final Duet, he and Sunny are often shown closer together. Basil shares his hopes, his dreams, and his greatest fears to Sunny, the closest friend he’s ever had. 

   And then... The incident. Basil sees Sunny, that friend who he trusts, possibly more than anyone in the world, arguing with his sister, and that dreaded moment when Sunny pushes her. She falls down the stairs, and eventually it becomes clear that she's dead. Basil doesn't want anything to happen to Sunny; he doesn't want to lose him, to lose the person he cares about possibly more than anyone else. He doesn’t want to be alone again. So he does the only thing he can think to do. The first thing to come to his mind is the n00se, because that's something that is or was frequently on his own mind. And he finally does it- he ties the n00se, but it's not for him, at least, not this time. 

   Soon after, the friend group falls apart. The only friends Basil has ever had, and from his perspective, he was the one who ruined it for them all. Which is why he so desperately clings to Sunny as a friend, the one lifeline that shows he’s not alone. And when his grandma’s condition deteriorates? That made him feel even more alone. 

Not only does this storyline explain how Basil knows how to tie a hangman's knot, but it also explains a lot about his character. Fear of abandonment, and reason that framing Mari's death as a su!c!de was the first thing to come to mind to protect his best friend, because the thought of su!c!de never wandered far from his mind. 

So- Omori rant rq since I'm listening to some VAs play through it cause I can't sleep.

Spoilers Below, obviously.

So- it's canon that Sunny was daydreaming of his little headspace FAR before Mari's death. It's in one of the books in the Forgotten Library (the place you fall into after defeating SweetHeart).

Headspace was an escape for him so that he could have his friends back, before they gave him the violin- hence why it never happened in the headpace timeline. To escape the pressure of not wanting to let them down, he created Headspace- but he got addicted to it and started to use it to avoid paying attention during school or whenever he was feeling pressured.

When Mari passed, Headspace took over his life- his parents split up, he was wracked with immense guilt, he couldn't bring himself to leave the house or even bed at first. His mother was forced to withdraw him from school since he had missed so many days, in order to prevent legal action being taken and her risking losing her only child left to his father or to CPS (logical guess, no actual proof other than he was taken out of school).

Sunny dived so deep into Headspace, that he was forced to create his Omori persona when he had gone too far and his brain created BlackSpace once it ran out of ideas- the place his guilt, regrets, and grief went to die everytime he allowed himself to sleep.

Sunny was always a maladaptive dreamer, but it steadily got worse overtime. As a maladaptive dreamer myself- I sympathize heavily with him and his coping mechanisms. His friends and family failed to see the signs that he was losing touch on reality, and when his big sister died- by his hands no less? He lost himself entirely. You can see when it happens in the photos you see of the truth.

When he realizes Mari isn't going to wake up? When he realizes she isn't breathing? His world shattered and he was paralyzed in his guilt- since he was so unresponsive, Basil did the only thing he could think of and tried to protect Sunny. In the process, gaslighting himself into having seen Something pushing Mari instead of Sunny.

Which, honestly, is also highly concerning. Why did Basil previously know how to tie a noose when he was only twelve..? My thoughts immediately go to his neglectful parents- maybe he had attempted before and that was the whole reason he was sent to live with his grandmother? To keep an eye on him, until she got sick and they hired Polly. Idk but that'd make sense.

ANYWHO- if anyone would like Omori oneshots, send in some requests. Be it tooth rotting fluff or heart wrenching angst- send it my way, I need a break from my books.

Each character has attacks related to their flower and likely either has their assigned flower in their hair or a flower crown of said flower. Personally, I like to imagine that Sunny and Basil would be the only ones to have flower crowns. 

Basil’s headspace is very different than Sunny’s. All the characters are their current ages. Aubrey is a frequent character Basil has to battle, though you always end up losing to her, or refusing to do damage. Depending on what’s happening outside of headspace, Kel sometimes aids in battles and is the one who urges Basil to fight Aubrey back. Hero is elsewhere in headspace, doing his own thing (idrk what to do about him, but he probably comes back when he visits from college). Mari isn’t exactly gone, but she’s not there as a normal character. Sometimes, her spirit is glimpsed, just like how it is in Sunny’s headspace. 

Unlike Sunny’s headspace being warm and happy and friendly, Basil’s is much darker. As if how Sunny couldn’t think of the Mari’s death and repressed it entirely, Basil could hardly stop thinking about it. Maybe the entire thing is monochrome except for his flowers. 

All the other characters have lost their flowers, and have either grown monochrome or a different color than their own. Each boss defeated (and the bosses aren’t fun and cool like Sunny’s; they’re more like the Somethings/phobias), Basil collects a new flower; one for each of his friends. Kel’s cactus is first, then Hero’s rose, then Aubrey’s gladiolus. 

I’m just gonna come up with some plot points for the three days from Basil’s POV if he had a headspace. On the final night, Basil’s headspace goes full nightmare-mode, partially why Basil is still awake on the final night. The nightmare kind of bleeds into reality as hallucinations, aka the Somethings. If Sunny doesn’t save Basil, the nightmare takes over, and… Well, you know what happens next. If Sunny DOES save Basil, Basil sees Sunny as Something, and Basil fights it, trying to stab the Something in the eye. Of course, he ends up stabbing SUNNY’S eye. Basil realizes what he’s done, and stabs himself. He ends up in headspace again. Headspace Sunny finds him, and leads him to the orchid flower, which is guarded by Something (both his own and Sunny’s, though kind of merged and shifting forms). They try to fight it, and eventually Basil realizes that he can’t. The way isn’t to fight the Something- instead, it’s just to calm down, hold each others’ hands, and trust in each other. Good ending, Something fades away, and they both water the orchid together with their tears, and the flower blooms. Bad end, Sunny fades away, leaving Basil to water it on his own, with his tears, but as his tears aren’t enough to fully water the flower.
