I don’t believe in Santa Claus. But I hate people in movies who refuse to believe.
hi i'm asking different hp fans to see what they think. So I've been thinking about the Harry-Hermione Friendship. and I admit to being puzzled as to Why they're friends-Best friends- Harry is always grateful for all the help Hermione gives him, and worries bout her getting hurt, and values her intelligence, but other than that he only mentions how much hermione nags him, and how it's boring going to the library. they dont do fun stuff together, yet, he consider her a 'Best friend' - thoughts?
I have a lot of thoughts.
For me, this friendship is one of the most important in the entireseries and I could write you a novel about how much I adore these kids. So,naturally, I couldn’t resist flipping through my Harry Potter books to findsome great Harry-Hermione friendship highlights.
(You named a few by the way - Harry does value her intelligence! And worries about her getting hurt! And is grateful for her help! These are all friendship things, I promise.)
But I’ll grant you that it is indeed a relationship that’s understated compared toothers, particularly the bond between Harry and Ron. (Not surprising when you consider that Harry is Ron’s Number One Fan.) Rather, the friendshipbetween Harry and Hermione is present is less obvious ways. Oh is it present.
After all,
Thereare some things you can’t share without ending up liking each other, and knocking out a twelve-foot mountain troll isone of them.
In the aftermath of the troll incident Harry points out thatHermione loosens up a lot in regards to breaking rules and is “much nicer for it”– a sentiment not to be taken lightly considering how intolerable she is to theboys at the beginning of the book. And she really does loosen up because notlong after this she literally sets Snapeon fire because there’s a chance he might be putting Harry in danger.
However, rule breaking aside, she’s still Hermione Granger and there are certain qualities that go along with that.
Yes, Hermione does nag. She does. That’s one of the waysher caring manifests. School is important – so very important – to this girl and of course she wantsher friends to do well. Of course she wants them to try and succeed because sheknows that they’re capable of great things. So she pushes them, she can’t help it. And yes, Harry and Ron grumble and roll their eyes, and like her anyway because that’s who Hermione is. And that’s okay.
Just because Harry doesn’t wax poetically about how dearHermione’s friendship is to him doesn’t mean it’s not there. She gets himthoughtful gifts, she helps him through his schoolwork, she rushes into dangerwith him over and over again. And – notably:
Hermione is arguably the one person in Harry’s life who never leaves.
Not when the school thinks he’s the Heir of Sytherin. Notwhen a mass murderer breaks out of prison to come after him. Not when he snubsher for ratting out his Firebolt. Not when his name comes out of the Goblet ofFire. Not when the whole wizarding world turns against him for claimingVoldemort is back. Not when Harry rushes off to the Ministry of Magic againstall sound thinking and someone dies. Not when she erases her own parents’memories of her. Not when they’re on the run from Death Eaters and a corruptMinistry, hiding in the woods. Not when they’ve run out of food and have noplans, no leads.
Not when Ron runs out on them.
Not when Harry visits his parents’ grave for the first time. Not when he proposes they break into Gringotts, the most secure wizard buildingafter Hogwarts itself. Not when Harry jumps onto the back of a dragon and hecalls out “Get up, climb up, come on –”
Not when their friends and family are dying and Voldemortsingles Harry out – You have permittedyour friends to die for you rather than face me yourself.
Hermione never leaves.
Because another way Hermione’s caring manifests is a deep, unwavering loyalty. People wonder how this girl didn’t end up in Ravenclaw, butI’d say Hufflepuff was a pretty close runner up considering how much she valuespersonal relationships and hard work.
“All - all three of us?” “Oh, come off it, you didn’t think we’d let you go alone?” “Oh course not,” said Hermione briskly. “How do you think you’d get to the Stone without us?”
“Atleast no one on the Gryffindor team had to buy their way in,” said Hermione sharply. “They got in on pure talent.”
“…Bittenoff more’n she can chew, if yeh ask me, all the work she’s tryin’ ter do. Stillfound time ter help me with Buckbeak’s case mind… she’s found some really goodstuff fer me… reckon he’ll stand a good chance now….”
Shehad slapped Malfoy across the face with all the strength she could muster. […] “Don’tyou dare call Hagrid pathetic, you foul – you evil –”
“Stopit!” Hermione said shrilly. […] She was looking, not a the spider, but atNeville, and Harry, following her gaze, saw that Neville’s hands were clenchedupon the desk in front of him, his knuckles white, his eyes wide and horrified.
Hewalked resolutely over to the portrait hole, pushed it open, climbed out of itand found himself face to face with Hermione. “Hello,” she said, holding up astack of toast, which she was carrying in a napkin. “I brought you this… wantto go for a walk?”
Ronand Hermione were supposed to be revising for their exams, which would finishon the day of the third task, but they were putting most of their efforts intohelping Harry prepare. “Don’t worry about it,” Hermione said shortly, whenHarry pointed this out to them, and said he didn’t mind practicing on his ownfor a while.
Heliked it best when he was with Ron and Hermione, and they were talking aboutother things, or else letting him sit in silence while they played chess. Hefelt as though all three of them had reached an understanding they didn’t needto put into words…
“Beenhaving a nice little chat with her about whether or not I’m a lying,attention-seeking prat, have you?” Harry said loudly. “No,” said Hermionecalmly. “I told her to keep her big fat mouth shut about you, actually. And itwould quite nice if you stopped jumping down our throats, Harry, because incase you haven’t noticed, Ron and I are on your side.”
“ThenI’ll go back again tomorrow,” said Hermione determinedly. “I’ll plan is lessonsfor him if I have to. I don’t care if she throws out Trelawney but she’s notgetting rid of Hagrid!”
Eventhrough his anger and impatience, Harry recognized Hermione’s offer toaccompany him into Umbridge’s office as a sign of solidarity and loyalty.
Heand Mr. Weasley took the lead across the station towards the Dursleys, who wereapparently rooted to the floor. Hermione disengaged herself gently from hermother to join the group.
“Yousaid it wasn’t just memorizing a bunch of spells, you said it was just you andyour brain and your guts – well, wasn’t that what Snape was saying? That itreally comes down to being brave and quick-thinking?” Harry was so disarmedthat she had thought his words as well worth memorizing as The Standard Bookof Spells that he did not argue.
“Ifyou ask me,” said Harry quietly, “McLaggen looked like he was Confunded. And he was standing right infront of where you were sitting.” Hermione blushed. “Oh, all right then, I didit,” she whispered. “But you should have heard the way he was talking about Ronand Ginny!”
“Yousaid to us once before,” said Hermione quietly, “that there was time to turnback if we wanted to. We’ve had time, haven’t we?”
“I – Hermione, I’m sorry – I didn’t –” “Didn’trealize that Ron and I know perfectly well what might happen if we come withyou? Well, we do.”
Hermione had taken his hand again and wasgripping it tightly. He could not look at her, but returned the pressure, nowtaking deep, sharp gulps of the night air, trying to steady himself, trying toregain control. He should have brought something to give them, and he had notthought of it, and every plant in the graveyard was leafless and frozen. ButHermione raised her wand, moved it through a circle in the air and a wreath ofChristmas roses blossomed before them. Harry caught it and laid it on hisparents’ grave.
His voice cracked with the strain, and thestood looking at each other in the whiteness and the emptiness, and Harry feltthey were as insignificant as insects beneath that wide sky. “He loved you,”Hermione whispered. “I know he loved you.”
Everywhere he looked he saw familiesreunited, and finally, he saw the two whose company he craved most. “It’s me,”he muttered, crouching down between them. “Will you come with me?” They stood upat once, and together he, Ron and Hermione left the Great Hall.
And gosh but that list is soincomplete. It doesn’t begin to cover the little things we pick up from Harry’spoint of view, the things he notices and says about Hermione in return. Howcould he not consider her a best friend? Friendship isn’t just laughs and fun. It’s compassion and bickering and loyalty, and frustration, and family.
“She’s like my sister,” he went on. “I loveher like a sister and I reckon she feels the same way about me. It’s alwaysbeen like that. I thought you knew.”
Somedays I really consider becoming some kind of creative goal coach.
Like, I love helping people break walls and obstacles to finish their projects or reach some point. I used to teach people via Livestream with art a couple years ago, or do tutorials on tumblr re: perspective, and when people would message me with “I FINALLY UNDERSTAND”, it was the best feeling ever.
I know what it’s like to have an idea and just feel overwhelmed with approaching it. I like the thought of finding out what someone wants to do, discussing with them the big milestones/things they need to achieve that goal, and then breaking those things down, and then becoming the positive reinforcement/accountability help they need to achieve some of these things. Re-jiggering goal posts if something is too much for them, helping them find other opportunities if something becomes untenable, etc etc etc
I wonder if that is a thing people would be interested in at all. I would make a side-career out of it if I could. Considering it being a high-tier reward if I ever do patreon. We’ll see.
No offense but I send a pestilence and plague into your house, into your bed into your streams, into your streets into your drink, into your BREAD UPON YOUR CATTLE, ON YOUR SHEEP UPON YOUR OXEN IN YOUR FIELD INTO YOUR DREAMS, INTO YOUR SLEEP UNTIL YOU BREAK, UNTIL YOU YIELD I 👏 SEND 👏 THE 👏 SWARM 👏 I 👏 SEND 👏 THE 👏 HORDE 👏 THUS 👏 SAITH 👏 THE 👏 LORD 👏👏👏
