Reminder that academia isn’t just an aesthetic but a way of living that allows you to see all the beauty in the world, to learn to your hearts content for the sake of learning, and to embrace human resilience and creation. It is NOT an excuse to think you’re better than anyone who “hAsnT rEad sHaKEspEaRe” nor is it required that you “look a certain way”. Wanna go all grunge and learn about Greek mythology? Wanna wear pastels and flower print while reading Dante’s Inferno? Wanna wear sweats and research Egyptian curses? Go for it! You aren’t bound to one aesthetic and should not feel pressured to look or behave a certain way! To me academia is about learning and love. i’m chey (she/her), a twenty one year old writer from the midwest! i’ve been writing for about ten/eleven years (i believe???) i’m not new to the community however i’ve decided to get back into it as i get back into my writing. honestly, i’ve lost touch with writing and i’ve missed it a lot so here i am!

Dark academia things you should NOT strive for:

Caffeine addictions. this shit ain't cute, learn better ways to manage you sleep and energy.

Workaholic culture, working hard is great but not in exsess

Romanticizing mental illness, you are just as valuable and talented healthy, happy. don't convince yourself otherwise

Elitism, you aren't better than other ppl for being more educated if your not polite.

Eurocentric: Dark. Academia. is. Not. Just. For .White. Skinny. People. In. Blazers.

Neurotypical lifestyle and studying patterns. If you can't do things the way neurotypicals do then don't force yourself. I tried to force myself to tale notes and memorise things the way is been taught in high school rather than what was best for me.

I know that this year's ramadan has been very challenging as mosques were closed and in a month of unity, meeting with friends and family just wasn't possible. I am very sorry you will not be able to celebrate Eid as you usually do because everyone is working hard to maintain social distancing. I heard that many muslims were kindly helping and donating more generously during that holy month, to that, as a citizen of the world going against a global pandemic, I am very thankful. I hope you will keep staying safe and want to tell you that better days will come.

dark academia critics

dark academia is like one of my favourite aesthetics however there are certain things/issues that bother me about this whole aesthetic

1. where is the diversity?

have you ever come across any dark academia posts that included any people of color. everywhere I go, all I see is elite white kids. I would die to see japanese/korean/indian /pakistani/ african/ middle eastern dark academia students often wearing their ethnic attires and embracing their cultures.

2. eat the rich

I know the whole theme about dark academia is ivy league/ rich elite students but imagine middle class dark academia srudents who are not necessarily clad in expensive attires rather wearing clothes bought from the thrift stores studying on scholarships, who own second hand books and antique/vintage items from some local flee markets or thrift stores.

3. fuck that Greek philosophy

not that I hate Greek philosophy but all dark academia posts do talk about is western art/architechture/ mythologies / history and philosophy etc. I would love to read and discuss persian poetry and history , south asian mythologies, japanese/Arabic/korean calligraphy, Muslim world's art and architecture.

4. what's up with that nerd shit.

why are dark academia students always protrayed as nerds, reserve, quiet, hates to have a social life, perfectionist who can't afford to get any grades lower than As etc like even the best students have their ups and downs, what matters is the passion and the will to do better. It's okay to have a life outside books, to have romantic dates, to prank, to hangout with yout friends, to skip classes, to be unorganized...its more realistic.
