Unforgettable
I present to you a - probably quite incomplete, I’m sure I’m missing a lot of speech sounds - reference list and a bit of a guideline for the different ways one can describe the sounds your characters make whilst writing smut. I’ll definitely be referring to it, because I sometimes get stuck on exactly how to describe a particular noise. (aka, “he can’t groan again, he just groaned last paragraph”)
Sounds (noun, both independently and describing speech): breath/breathe, gasp, moan, groan, pant, whimper, whine, shout, yelp, hiss, grunt, cry, scream, shriek, sob, growl, curse, sound, sigh, hum, noise, squeak, snarl, howl, roar, mewl, wail, choke, keen, purr
Sounds (noun, describing speech): rasp, husk, drawl, plea, murmur, whisper, beg
Descriptors (adjective): loud, hushed, quiet, low, high, high-pitched, little, tiny, soft, deep, unrestrained, restrained, strained, breathy, rough, sudden, short, drawn-out, sharp, harsh, hard, thick, smooth, thin, heavy, impassioned, insistent, hungry, passionate, repeated, filthy, debauched, sweet, slow, deliberate, guttural, languid, surprised, husky, distracted, happy, pleased, satisfied, wordless, cut-off, bitten-off, contented, hoarse, extended, long, depraved, aching, choked, strangled, broken, helpless, shuddering, shaky, trembling, urgent, needy, desperate, wanton, shattered, pained, eager
Combine a descriptor and a sound for best effect - for example, “needy moan,” “pleased hum,” or “sudden scream.” You can even use two: “low, rough grunt,” “sweet little cry,” “desperate, filthy noise,” as long as you don’t repeat a word that means the same thing, unless you really want to emphasize it. Avoiding repetition is pretty key here. You don’t usually want to say “hushed, quiet gasp” except on rare occasions when it’s very important how soft the sound was.
Use your own common sense, as well; some sounds and descriptors don’t generally work well together. “Deliberate shriek” probably wouldn’t work well, and neither would “languid grunt,” but again, this is all very situational - play around! Have fun.
Feel free to add to my lists, use for your reference or pass them around. It would be fun to see a randomized generator made, too, I’m just too lazy to do it myself. ;)
I truly don’t understand the lack of Gaz love -
ok well
I do at some level
I think the argument usually levied against his character id that he’s boring
but beautifully stated by tumblr user mockerycrow in their character analysis of him
CHARACTERS DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE A TRAGIC BACKSTORY TO BE INTERESTING CHARACTERS
press keep reading to fall in love with Gaz
I’m going to start out with who Gaz is as a character
morality
Gaz is someone who has a strong sense of morality and struggles with the balance between doing the right thing and doing the morally right thing, there’s this debate between long-term morality and situational morality that Gaz struggles with
look im maybe not the most linguistically talented person on earth so im just gonna throw in a few quotes which i think gives Gaz
Gaz is someone who admist chaos and war is trying his best, trying his best to be a good person, to be reliable and to do the right thing
if thays not lovable idk what is
relationship to price
ok so i think this aspect of Gaz’s character is what people tend to focus on
and as much as the omg price’s son shit is cute i think he’s become a vehicle for people to emphasise price’s daddy factor (which like dont get me wrong keep up the good work)
but i think theres so much more to that
i forgot who wrote this but someone said something about Gaz trying to follow in impossibly large footsteps and i think thats so accurate
going back to Gaz’s struggle with morality there’s so much untapped potential in the idea that his idol, may not be an amazing person, having to come to grips with the idea that Price, his role model can look at a woman and child as interrogation leverage is something that i think people need to look into more
OK so now
so here are somethings which i
idk if this is like the correct phrasing
headcannon? idk i just think these are parts of Gaz’s character which could be rlly interesting to explore
ahem
yes Gaz is a good guy, but that doesn’t make him passive Gaz has shown moments of anger, like in the interrogation with the butcher when he lunges at him or when him and price first meet
i think the fact that Gaz is so calm and collected but has these moments are cracks in the facade he creates
i believe personally he has a lot of repressed anger whether it be at the world, at himself, at his captain hes an angry dude hes just better at keeping it under wraps
and i know we don’t really have many details on his backstory but cmon there’s no way u sign up for a job like this and don’t have any issues whatsoever
i think this quote is so good for this because he’s harnessed his anger, it’s what makes him good at his job, a knife, a weapon
i think another interesting concept for Gaz is guilt
the fact that he cares about whats right and wrong how does he feel going to sleep at night? do these things haunt him? is he irredeemable?
i think its like that one quote “the dog that weeps after it kills is no better than the dog that doesn’t. My guilt does not purify me.”
anyways guys thanks for coming to my ted talk
i know this was really messy but i just want to encourage some Gaz love because i think he’s a really interesting complex character who we just need to dig a little deeper into
i hope this incites some more gaz love
THANK YOU 😳
I love The Golden Girls.
This is my self indulgant way of dealing with the titanic amount of stress that is making my brain whisper of the void. I will stick around, I have to much to be a menace about but why not think about how they would deal with it? Plus if my mother (derogatory) gets to outlive me? Absolutely not.
CW: Suicidal thoughts mentioned
Johnny: Froze a bit once he understands what you are saying.
"Bonnie, why? What? I don't understand?" He holds your face so tight as he flicks his gaze between your eyes.
You laugh lightly, "There is nothing to understand Johnny, sometimes my brain just starts throwing around death as an option. I've learned to tell people so they can help me keep me present. I don't want to die, and I have no plans. I just need you to know that if I randomly start crying I'm okay. I already have an appointment with my doctor and my therapist scheduled to look at my meds."
The concern doesn't leave his face as he pulls you in for a hug. Johnny is always watchful of you but it definately takes on a new level after telling him about the thoughts coming back.
Kyle: Pulled the car over the moment he realizes what you said to him and rests his head on the steering wheel.
"Thank you for telling me, what can I do for you?"
Fighting back the tears you blink and fan your eyes.
"Nothing really? My therapist challenged me to tell someone the next time these thoughts pop up, and I trust you enough to know you won't freak out." You watch him carefully take in several deep breaths before he sits upright and looks at you.
If his eyes are a bit shiny with tears? Neither of you mention it.
"Want to get a drink and sit in the sun for a bit?" He offers.
"I would love that." The tears flow this time. Kyle holds your hand until he is forced to let it go to get out of the car.
Gary: He would find you mid-breakdown because dammit you thought you were past this? It had been years since the last time your brain betrayed you like this and life was going good for once? Yes, you were under some stress but not enough to warrent this overreaction by your brain.
He would pull you into a hug as he sits next to you on the floor and hum lullabies and the randomest collecitons of songs that live inside his head. When you can finally breath without a hitch in your breath he would ask what is wrong.
"My brain is lying to me again. Saying that being dead would be easier than dealing with all this stress," you sniffle into his shoulder.
"Being dead would be easier," he observes calmly.
When you shoot him a glare because that is NOT helpful, he smiles and rubs a thumb through the tears leftover on your face.
"But I know you don't want that, and I'll keep you present and healthy. Let's get some food delivered and then go over some of the things I can take off your plate until things settle down, alright?"
When that causes a new round of tears Gary orders dinner from his phone before coaxing you to the couch with the promise of your favorite show (He can't stand it but knows it will help.)
Simon: The hug he would give you after you hold him? Soul altering. He holds you until you feel real again and presses a kiss to your head. If you find something helpful he asks that you share because he has dealt with his own share of suicidal thoughts ravaging his already messed up mind.
He starts picking up tasks around the house, starting the shower or making dinner, as a way to help you. He checks in at least once a day. He isn't overbearing about it, knowing that the fact you told him is a huge sign of trust and he wouldn't dare abuse it.
John: Oh this man, he would be calling your doctor and therapist and setting up an appointment for you the instant you fell asleep for one of those exhaustion naps. He would book you for a hair cut, a massage, and to get your nails done before the week is out.
He's lost good friends to suicide and the idea that you might disappear? That your thoughts might get to loud to hear that he loves you? He would never recover if he lost you like that. John makes you cry again when he explains everything he has set up for you but he shows his love through actions and these are things he can control. If he could mount a full scale invasion on your brain to kick out whatever makes you think of death as an option he would in a heartbeat.
Masterlist
Jason Todd is so whipped that he's willing to cave to your silly little advances. Cuddles? With that fluffy Hello Kitty blanket that stretches far and wide on that king mattress of yours? Fuck yes. Buying those overpriced Japanese strawberries? Why not. Buying the whole shelf full of Sanrio plushies? Bitch, take his money. Matching bracelets, matching shirts, matching pajamas? Take it. Take it all. That trend where you wrap pink ribbons around his muscles? Why the fucking fuck not?
That's your boyfriend. Your weak, doting, vigilante boyfriend.
He's also doting in bed—getting you off like he'll die if he can't make you squirt on that chiseled face of his. Holding you down until you just want to crawl away from the overwhelming pleasure. He's doting in a way that has him helping you hoist yourself up on his third fucking leg just to let you slam yourself down until you've thoroughly fucked the remaining intelligence out of that cute brain of yours. Doting in a way where he lets you pull his hair when you just can't take it anymore after cumming for the nth time, or when you bite him wherever.
That's your boyfriend. That's Jason Todd.
and if johnny’s interest in mommy kink gets instigated by kyle (without kyle knowing), what then
thinking about johnny accidentally snooping on kyle’s phone. he didn’t mean to, really. he just heard kyle’s phone ringing, saw the contact name being mommy, and hollered for his friend.
poor chap practically tore the phone from johnny’s hand before racing out of the room. price and ghost were just as astonished as johnny was, the three of them making awkward eye contact with each other because, truly, what the fuck.
kyle was all tight-lipped when he returned, glaring at johnny for butting into his business but johnny swore he didn’t—
“it’s y’r mum! what’d ya want me to do? let it go to voicemail?”
“it isn’t–” kyle’s lips curled like he tasted something sour. “just. mind your business next time.”
there was a heartbeat of silence, before soft chortles rumbled from their captain. johnny realized, at the sound of price’s laughter, what type of mommy, exactly, was calling kyle.
“oh, shit,” he murmured, something like desire filling him up. he ignored ghost’s stare or their captain’s petering laughter; he ignored the wafting question that descended on them all because kyle was looking at him with something like understanding.
like recognition.
“she would love you,” kyle said after a while, smiling. “do you want a mommy, ‘tavish?”
it was said so softly, so quietly, and yet it rang like a gunshot in johnny’s head. he didn’t even realize the ragged rasp of his breath or the way his body hunched over in his desire. all he knew, all he could focus on, was the invitation that kyle was giving him.
“please,” he muttered, too needy for anything louder.
—
you are the best thing to ever happen to him. the prettiest thing; all crooning and teasing, all dimpled smile and quiet giggles. johnny thought all he would have gotten was a quick fuck—get his dick wet, explore his new kink, maybe even shed a few tears; he really didn’t know what he was looking for.
but then, there you were. are.
so accepting. so lovely. so desirable in a way that had him begging for more, his words all slurred with his tears and desperation.
“please,” he said to you too then. he couldn’t voice out what it was he really wanted to say. but he didn’t need to, not with the way you cupped his cheeks and brushed away the tears and sweat staining his flushed cheeks.
“of course,” you said. “such a good boy, f’me.”
johnny dropped his face on the soft of your lap, trying to tamp down the tears. the hiccups.
he shivered at the rougher hands that also began to play with his hair.
“so good f’r us, johnny,” kyle added, so soft. so careful.
johnny shivered, desire bloating.
he really needed to give kyle a fruit basket or something.
—
“i really thought it’d be you into that,” price murmurs when it’s just him and simon, before taking a drag on his cig.
simon almost chokes on his whiskey. “what?” he croaks out.
price breathes out the smoke, fingers drumming on the table, only to shrug and keep to himself again.
simon gawks because what the hell.
