free-thoughts on mr kaz brekker and mr anthony lockwood

i’ve seen a lot of people compare kaz brekker and anthony lockwood / say that they would be friends. i’d like to present a lil counter argument

i mean they’re definitely similarly-coded characters, that’s for sure- they carry similar trauma in similar ways, the lil emo boy aesthetic, “i don’t talk about feelings alfred. ive never had one, ive never seen one” type vibe.

but to me, the fundamental difference between them is that in response to all of his trauma, kaz hardened up and closed himself off. he became what he needed to be to survive- the bastard of the barrel. but on the other hand, lockwood stayed a crack open. despite all he did to try and close himself off, he stayed positive and kind- he managed to keep his spark. maybe this is just due to their environments- maybe if lockwood had been in ketterdam, he would’ve hardened completely too- but i still think it’s an important difference between them.

in the hypothetical that these two divas meet, i see lockwood annoying the hell out of kaz- kind of like jesper does, but i think they’re way too similar for kaz to tolerate it in the same way he does w jes. lockwood is too much like jordie, but also too much like kaz himself.

knowing lockwood went through similar experiences (in regards to loss and having to make it alone, while still being surrounded by ghosts) but came out kindhearted would probably drive kaz a little crazy. and alternatively knowing that he easily could have turned out as vengeful, cold, and angry as kaz- maybe that he even had been at some point- would lowkey scare the shit out of lockwood.

i’m not saying they’d hate each other, but i doubt they’d really be friends either. maybe if they sat down, got really drunk, and had a whole trauma-bond/intensive therapy session… but i mean we all know how likely those two are to talk about their feelings lmao

but on the other hand, lockwood and jesper? now that’s two idiot bffs. they’d hit it off immediately- imagine the banter. plus both of them constantly gambling with their lives to avoid their issues, then playing it off like it’s nothing. mr “you’re our greatest asset” and mr “maybe i liked your stupid face”. they would be Unstoppable. chaos would reign. wylan and lucy would form a support group (inej would join).

this got longer than i meant oops. idk they rotate in my brain constantly and i have Been Thinking. i miss my crows and my favorite agency

Premise: Viggo slowly becoming afraid of Hiccup. Not because of his skill or his intellect or Toothless, but because Hiccup is resilient as hell.

Because, despite everything Viggo tries, all the physical and emotional torture, he's still standing. Still stubbornly defiant. Still alive and still snarling at Viggo with rage and determination in his emerald colored eyes.

And slowly, Viggo becomes afraid. Because no normal person should be able to withstand even half of what he's had done to Hiccup. No normal person should be able to endure the trauma Hiccup has and still, mostly, act like nothing happened.

No normal person should be able to talk to dragons like they're friends. No normal person should be able to ride a night fury, to endure the whiplash and wind and the physical strain, and still be steady enough to fight seconds after dismounting.

Viggo slowly realizing Hiccup, truly, is no normal person. And that scares him, because now he doesn't know what he can do to actually win. Short of outright killing Hiccup, which would only get the rest of Berk on his ass, Viggo, for once, is lost. For once, Viggo doesn't have a plan.

kaz and wylan are very much foils, and while much has been said about their similarities and how their stories parallel each other, it’s also worth noting that while kaz gives up his rietveld identity to survive in the barrel, wylan clings to what makes him wylan throughout his time in the barrel. when kaz loses everything, he throws away goodness and honesty; when wylan loses everything, he clings to goodness and honesty because it’s all he has left. they have fundamentally different backgrounds which obviously influence their choices and outlooks on life, but it’s interesting nonetheless!
