i have a lot more to say about my least favorite henry moment though; i know we all clown on the 1831 turning henry into a colonizer thing, and i absolutely love to make fun of it as well because is was A Choice, but henry's character assassination in the 1831 edition fills me with genuine and outstanding rage. to what extent he just serves as a love letter to percy shelley (i think the idea has merit that clerval was based on percy but i also think it kinda follows the general trend of people attributing mary's genius and independent work to percy at every conceivable opportunity) (if anything i'd argue walton is more like percy) can be debated, but it is so infuriating to me how henry goes from a character that seems to have been written with genuine affection and enthusiasm, hence why he's so charming, to being a glorified plot device in the 1831 edition. having henry go from a sensual capital r Romantic whose only goals are to worship nature and discover all the beautiful corners of the earth, learning eastern languages and going to england just for the sake of living out a worldly life, to some businessman whose actions are spurred on by some manly commitment to "enterprise" is so annoying to me. i really really do hate what she did to him in the 1831 edition but i get why. this is a trend with the 1831 edition: making the male characters' more sensitive and emotionally demonstrative behaviors less obvious and making the female characters' more headstrong personalities milder show how mary had to nuke the subtleties of the novel to make it more palatable and interpretable for victorian society. ofc she was older when she wrote the 1831 edition so much of it could've been her own shifting perspective but i maintain that 1831 is decidedly much more conservative and seems to tread on eggshells on the subjects mary used to be so bold discussing in frankenstein. i don't think that one edition is better than the other, there are things i like and disliked about both, but i do think you need to know the differences between the two and their exigence to get a holistic understanding of the novel.

all the anti-abortion votes are crazy when victor literally has the metaphor for an abortion within the book. put some respect on his name

if victor is the creature's literal father, then by extension the female creature would have been the creature's literal sister. by choosing to break his promise and destroy the bride, victor is breaking the cycle of abuse by refusing to comply to the demand that he dictate a marriage between siblings, like his mother did to him and elizabeth.

victor describing himself as “always having been imbued with a fervent longing to penetrate the secrets of nature” and then a few chapters later saying "[henry] was a being formed in the very poetry of nature". 🤨🤨 i know what you are

It’s weird that in all the essays I read on Frankenstein none of them have noted that Victor is heavily transmasculine-coded. Like he hits on a weirdly large number of transmasculine, particularly gay transmasculine experiences that are relevant today:

pregnancy and childbirth as traumatic and horrible yet unstoppable experiences that are totally foreign to nature

obsessive fantasies and ideation of an ideal masculine body

society finding your fantasized idealized male form monstrous and especially dangerous to children

being punished for recognizing that women are capable of independence and therefore can be as monstrous as their male counterparts

parents wishing for a real daughter when all they have is you

feigning attraction to a woman, any woman, for some scrap of masculinity, even though it’s obvious you’re not actually interested

weird esoteric historical interests that everyone around you denigrates as useless that you keep doing anyway

falling for your male best friend in a totally gay way

physically and mentally falling apart because of an unexplainable secret

trying to reveal the unexplainable secret getting shrugged off as impossible and you’re considered crazy — even your best friend seems to think it’s due to trauma you can’t articulate rather than what you’re actually literally saying

creating the man “responsible” for destroying your family and being a menace to society

I’m sure there’s more but that’s all I can think of off the top of my head. And yet cis people still keep pushing stories of girls dressing up as boys to experience the glory of war as transmasculine experiences. Why.

if you think about it victor was multilingual as fuck. he would have spoken french (his first language as a genevese), german (due to going to ingolstadt university), english (he communicated with walton who was english) latin (to read ancient alchemy, also likely part of his education as a european), and hebrew, arabic or different oriental language(s) (which he learned with henry at ingolstadt), and, this is purely speculative, but he may have been familiar with swiss-german dialects and MAYBE italian; he traveled there in his youth and geneva is very close to the italian border. all by his mid 20s. thats NUTS
