It’s not breaking and entering, you reason, if Yangyang willingly gave you the passcode to his apartment.

It’s 3pm and you know he has a macroeconomics lecture that he’s supposed to be in right now and you just saw his housemate Dejun in Starbucks, so the apartment should be empty. You tap in the six-digit entry code and, with a soft chime, the lock whirrs and clicks open. You push the door open to the darkened, quiet apartment, kicking off your shoes and shutting the door behind you.

Almost immediately, you make a beeline to Yangyang’s room. Well, to his closet, in particular. The thing about Liu Yangyang is that he has more clothes than anybody else you know, and you’ve been slowly depleting his hoodie collection over the past 2 months and he (seemingly) hasn’t noticed yet. You’ve even gone as far as wearing his own hoodie in front of him and he didn’t say anything.

Which one this week?

The hangers rattle as you rifle through the densely packed row of hoodies hanging in the back, inspecting each one until your hand falls on the softest thing you’ve ever touched. If fabric could be made of clouds, that’s what this hoodie would be made out of.

Immediately, you pull it off the hanger and extract it, marveling at how silky smooth, yet pillowy the material is. You lift it to your cheek. It feels like you’re rubbing your face against a puppy’s ear. The hoodie smells like Yangyang’s fabric softener, a crisp, comforting scent that makes your heart flutter in your chest.

Without another moment of hesitation, you pull it on over your head, swimming in the oversized hoodie for a few moments before finding the arm holes and threading your hands through the sleeves. Feeling very satisfied with this week’s selection, you wander out into Yangyang’s room and plop yourself backwards onto his bed (or at least, the mass of giant plushies and pillows that cover his bed during the day).

You’re making yourself comfortable in his bed when you hear a crinkling sound from the pocket of the hoodie. Frowning, you stick your hand in, grasping at fabric for a few moments before your fingers close on a crumpled sticky note. You pull it out and lean back against Yangyang’s pillow to unfold the paper and read the message written inside.

Refracted sunlight was what woke you early in the morning, gently stirring you from your slumber. Your eyes opened slowly, blinking away the sleep dust from the previous night and you let out a contented sigh as they focused on your surroundings. Around you your fellow Gryffindor’s slept quietly, not yet awake. The dorm was decorated in various pieces of tinsel, holly, wreaths and bells. The drapes of your yearmates’ canopied beds were the comforting red and gold of Gryffindor and three beds over you could hear Aaliyah’s gentle but present snores. You chuckled at the sound and looked up to your right where the light that had fallen on your face and woken you was coming from. 

You let out a slight gasp at what you saw and propped yourself up to catch a better glimpse of what was outside your window for everything, as far as you could see was covered in snow. The slanted roofs of Hogwarts castle, the ground from the castle courtyard to the hills leading down to Hagrid’s hut, even the forbidden forest far off in the distance, had a thick foot of fresh, pure, snow covering everything. The windowsill itself had its own helping of snow decorating it and icicles hanging from the top of the curved window frame caught the sun’s morning beams and shone them into the dorm room.

“Snow,” you breathed in awe. You slid out of bed, feet padding quietly on the stone floor which was, like the rest of the room, kept comfortably warm via use of some spell no doubt. You pressed yourself up against the cold glass of the window, peering through to get a better look of the outside, and when your breath fogged up the window you quickly drew random little shapes. But something soaring in the sky caught your eye and you blinked, squinting to focus on whatever was floating through the air. It looked to be some sort of ball, almost like one used in Quidditch– almost immediately you saw two boys on broomsticks hurtling after the ball, now most certainly a quaffle. They flew neck and neck, occasionally jostling up against the other, long bats in their hand. One wore Ravenclaw colours; the other was donned in Gryffindor robes.

“Runaway bludger!” The Gryffindor shouted as the bludger zoomed towards the castle. You could hear his voice faintly through the glass. “Damnnit Dejun, you hit it too hard!”

“I hit it too hard?” The Ravenclaw, Xiao Dejun, said in outrage. “You’re supposed to hit it hard, it’s a bludger! The damned thing has a mind of it’s own– move!” The Ravenclaw boy let out a squawk and sharply banked away from the Gryffindor as the bludger slowed its momentum and fiercely zipped back at the two boys. The Gryffindor continued to fly towards it and for a moment your breath caught, thinking he was going to be taken out by it. Then he smoothly dipped out of its way, turned and hit it squarely with his bat.

Your break-up wasn’t supposed to be a break up.

Initially, it was just a break.

Fresh out of college with your undergrads, drowning in debt and lacking in love, you told your boyfriend of three years, Kim Doyoung, that you needed a break. You had simply grown apart, and needed time to reprocess your relationship. Being the understanding man you knew him to be, he obliged.

You had expected it to last a week or two, maybe a month. But Doyoung had packed his necessities from your shared apartment and, with a kiss on your forehead, left for Taeyong’s place, promising to be back whenever you needed. But he never came back.

You didn’t really know what it was that kept you from calling him.

Perhaps it was that you were a writer. Your head in the clouds and your emotions always running wild, you constantly overthought every single detail of your relationship. You would keep telling yourself you needed more time away. That time grew from days, to weeks, to months, until it had been over a year since the last time Doyoung pressed his chapped lips to your skin in a chaste kiss.

Perhaps it was that Doyoung, as a law student, was far too emotionless and had no qualms giving you your infinite space, even as your relationship silently disintegrated. He respected your space, told you to reach out to him when you were ready. But you had never been ready.

Perhaps it was just that in your time apart, the love faded. You both came to realize this.

You walk into the break room, noticing your coworker- Jaehyun, hunched over on his phone, lips pursed. When he notices your presence, he smiles slightly, “hey,” he mumbles, before looking back down at his phone.

You and Jaehyun have always been friends- as the youngest people in your department, you automatically clicked and stuck together. Jaehyun has always been kind to you, he was nice to everyone. The other women in your office would often remind you of how lucky you were because of your friendship- but you were just friends, nothing more. In the almost 2 years you had known him, Jaehyun had never brought up dating or talk of a romantic life. Jaehyun’s daughter- Jina, took up most of his time and he loved it- but it also meant he barely had any time to actually pursue relationships outside of work. 

“You good?” You ask, sitting down on the sofa across from him.

“Yeah, yeah,” he smiles. “I’m just trying to find a babysitter last minute for tonight.”

You listen while you bite into your apple. He hesitates before asking, “You wouldn’t happen to know of one would you?”

You shrug, “No, I don’t think so sorry.”

“I figured,” Jaehyun laughs, “considering you don’t have kids or anything.”

There’s a lingering silence and you almost feel bad. By the distressed look on his face when you walked in, it seemed pretty urgent. “Yeah,” you start, “I mean, well- I could watch Jina if you need me too.”

Jina is 4- almost 5, and looks a lot like her father. You could immediately recognize her as Jaehyun’s, with one dimple like his, a similar eye shape, and a toothy smile- she looked practically identical. She was shy and well mannered, often tucking herself into her father’s pant leg when meeting new people.
