Hello! I would like to warn everyone of an experience my roommate and I have just had, in case I can prevent it happening to anyone else. Or, you know, if anyone knows a lawyer who could advise us.
My roommate has a queen size Nectar mattress. Friday night, she spilled some water on the bed and took the cover off to air dry. She unzipped the cover, and a flame retardant sleeve (that we hadn’t known was there to begin with) made of woven fiberglass began shedding small fiberglass particles. They were airborne. The whole room and everything in it is contaminated, and there are few surfaces elsewhere in the apartment that don’t have at least a little. Nowhere on the mattress' tags or on the Nectar website does it say there is a fiberglass sleeve. In fact, it makes a big deal of how there are five components: top of cover, three layers of foam, bottom of cover. Nothing about the flame retardant sleeve there. The label on the cover doesn't say you can't take it off, just that they suggest you don't. It does not mention fiberglass as a material found in the mattress at all. The website even has a page explaining that you CAN take off the cover and wash it, if you must, just that they suggest you don't. No real reasons given. No mention of fiberglass.
Our apartment is sparkly with fiberglass. We have had to drop money on a HEPA filter vacuum that could safely remove some of it, and on new non-permeable mattress covers to contain the worst of the source. We have had to garbage-bag up almost everything in her room. No amount of runs through the laundry seems to get it all out of clothes, and we have to thoroughly wipe out the washer and dryer drums every load. All her pillows were ruined, the chair in her room, her clothing, some expensive bras, a nice area rug, and I'm sure there will be trouble on the horizon with our landlord regarding the carpet, even if we do vacuum it as well as we can.
Lilly has been having nosebleeds, before the mattress was unzipped, but the worst one I've seen yet was the one that evening. She's been sleeping on it almost a year, and it could have begun coming through the fabric cover. Nosebleeds are a sign of fiberglass inhalation.
We have contacted the company, and their response was honestly insulting. We were told that we shouldn't have taken the mattress cover off to begin with, and that it can no longer be covered by the 365 night guarantee, despite us having had it for under the full year. I have just now, after three days trying, finally spoken to someone willing to look into our case, so here's hoping we'll get even a fraction of what we are, frankly, owed.
It really feels like there could be some sort of lawsuit here.
In fact, there is one, with a situation nearly identical to ours but with a different company. This was the first hit when I searched our problem online.

Anyway, if you have a Nectar mattress, don't ever open the easily accessible warning-label-free zipper! If you have had it under a year, and it's in its original condition, it can still be returned. If you were planning to get one, maybe don't! A lot of the foam-mattress-in-a box types have the fiberglass, though most of them disclose the presence of the fiberglass rather than hiding it like a dirty secret. Make sure you do a search for mattresses WITHOUT fiberglass as a flame retardant.
July is disability awareness month but a lot of people tend to forget it :/ :/ :/
((i know scrolling through and reblogging long posts can be annoying sometimes, but if you have the time please read through and reblog because i’m sick and people need to know about this))
this movie is called music and it’s about a supposedly about a nonverbal, austistic girl named music. the problem? music is played by maddie ziegler
maddie is neurotypical (individuals of typical developmental, intellectual, and cognitive abilities,) ie: she is NOT on the spectrum and NOT disabled. so there’s the first issue. but then we get into sia’s response to the whole thing which ends up being worse somehow
people are obviously and rightfully upset with maddie’s casting.
so what was sia’s response to the criticism?
“oh well, we tried”
now i work as a paraprofessional in an elementary school and many of our students are on the spectrum, nonverbal, disabled, or some combination of all three and/or more. sometimes working with students with disabilities can be challenging but the biggest lesson i have learned in the last 3 years is that there are always ways to be ACCOMMODATING because it often is a LOT more difficult for the student who is neurodiverse than the adult who is neurotypical. i have seen tremendous growth when working with students with educational and social disabilities when they are given the appropriate accommodations, patience, and understanding.
the actress sia and this team worked with probably did find the whole situation daunting and stressful, because like the fucking movie says in the trailer, her brain is DIFFERENT FROM OURS. if this movie was really about spreading awareness about disabilities, they would have accommodated to the actress so that she could work stress free and feel safe and if they couldn’t figure out how to do that, they shouldn’t have made the fucking movie at all
sia also manages to criticize sex workers and people struggling from addictions at the same time during her “defense”
let’s see what else?
oh the movie is not accessible
there are no also no fucking captions for a movie supposedly about disabilities
oh and autism speaks is involved too which sia justifies “not knowing how garbage they are” on a MOVIE ABOUT A GIRL WHO IS ON THE SPECTRUM HOW FUCKING STUPID DO YOU HAVE TO BE
this one actress states that she and many other austistic actors said they would be a part of the movie short notice
to which sia had to say this
i’m not trying to be a proponent of cancel culture but this is fucking DISGUSTING. sia is trying to justify her actions with ableist bullshit. she’s upset that people are judging her movie “before they’ve seen it” when it’s CLEARLY NOT WORTH SEEING because like many people have pointed out, this movie is NOT an accurate portrayal of disabilities, not accessible, the people involved clearly didn’t put the effort and time into making something that actually brought any kind of awareness, and all of this boils down to sia and her team being a bunch of ableist who weren’t willing to put in the effort or time.
imagine having such a large platform as these celebrities have and creating an ableist, garbage piece of media that only polarizes and discriminates even further and then acting like you’re the victim in the situation. i’m DISGUSTED, APPALLED, ANGERED, and OUTRAGED and you should too.
people on the spectrum matter, nonverbal people matter, people with disabilities matter, neurodiverse people matter.
while we do our social justice thing to shut down racism, sexism, homophobia, etc, let’s remember to shut down ableism as well because it fucking matters too

if you have loved ones in lebanon or you are aware of someone who has loved ones in lebanon, i strongly urge you to reach out to them as soon as possible. if you don’t have loved ones in lebanon, i hope you at least spread the word to help others and keep beirut in your thoughts today.
this all started just barely two hours ago, and the reports are still coming in with updates. keep an eye on the news, if you can. stay safe.
THIS is exactly it. I should have dropped a class after like 3 days it wasn’t even to like a worse class (AP bio to IB bio to take AP bio again next year) but I didn’t because I didn’t want to feel dumb for dropping a class and I didn’t want people to think I’m dumb for dropping a class. There’s nothing even wrong with dropping a class it means you know your limits. But I was so obsessed with seeming or feeling smart that I got myself in trouble that could affect my college chances.
The worst part of being a “gifted kid” is being praised for getting your academic side before your emotional and interpersonal side and then being left to drown because you can’t emotionally understand that you still have value when someone is smarter than you.
I’m a smart kid, don’t get me wrong. I’m taking honors and AP classes, and I could’ve been taking classes at the community college if I hadn’t had a badly placed breakdown.
But I’m about to have a meltdown because there’s a kid in my AP Physics class who’s got a higher grade than I do. I learned how to craft a damn near impeccable lab write-up, and saddled myself with two incredibly smart and focused individuals. But this one guy has a better grade then me and I’ve been sitting here with my AP Physics Mock Test trying not to cry because it doesn’t make sense and I know that he gets it.
I didn’t even sign up for the AP test because I just know that he would get a better grade and then I’d have to scream and meltdown because I don’t know how to handle it. I don’t even know why I care so much! I didn’t even want to take this class! I would’ve dropped it at the beginning of the year but a friend of mine dropped it and my gifted kid brain decided I had to prove it was easy by passing the class.
Why can’t I be okay with not being the smartest? I don’t have anything to prove, I’m already taking advanced classes! I just want to be okay with people being slightly more understanding of a certain subject than I am.
fucking around for three days and then making a herculean effort on day four that restores your average progress to what a moderately inept person would have achieved with consistent effort, that’s what it’s all about.
