“Oh Well That Makes Sense, Especially In New York I Guess. I’m Not Sure How Many Cabs Would Let You

“Oh well that makes sense, especially in New York I guess. I’m not sure how many cabs would let you in with a cat on the loose so at least with her in a pram thing you can just walk there or get the underground.” If it wasn’t raining and Julia was in that position she would one hundred percent walk so as to avoid the hell of New York’s subway. Useful, sure. Pleasant? Never. “She’d be meowing at everyone you walk past. I was on instagram the other day doomscrolling because I couldn’t sleep and this account came up about this guy who rides around with his cat in the basket of his bicycle. This fluffy white thing that just sits there and looks around - it was actually kind of adorable in a wildly impractical way.”

Following the other towards the returns she listened as she spoke about not being tempted to pick up any medical books, understanding the concept of having different interests but the idea of walking into that section of a library without taking something home with you entirely alien to her. “I’m sure you would understand more than you give yourself credit for. I mean of course the terms are complex if you don’t know what they mean I guess - that is quite specific. Plus when they delve into more detailed specifications…” She trailed off, putting the bag of books down onto the floor once they arrived at the returns desk. @ofzahras

“Oh Well That Makes Sense, Especially In New York I Guess. I’m Not Sure How Many Cabs Would Let You

It was a relief how Julia seemed to understand exactly what she was going through and didn't ask any awkward follow up questions. Their careers were evidently very different but there were similarities as well. The constant need to learn more and keep researching even when that was the last thing you wanted to do. Zahra truly appreciated Julia's company in that moment, glad she had ran into her.

"Oh yeah. I thought it would be useful if I had to take her to the vet or something. She's not the smallest of cats so carrying her isn't exactly fun," she explained. Her face seemed to lit up as she talked about Circe and the corners of the mouth twitched towards a smile. "But I've been too embarrassed to use it. She's real loud, too, so I'm sure no one would think I had an actual baby in there." That being said, Zahra would undoubtedly change her mind the moment she saw someone else prancing around with their cat in a stroller.

She nodded eagerly, clearly delighted by the prospect of accomplishing something small yet meaningful. "Absolutely. Sounds good," she agreed, already heading towards the returns. "It's ideal, really. I doubt I will be too tempted to pick up any medical books. Wouldn't understand most of it. The Latin and Greek I studied wouldn't get me very far with those terms."

“Sounds delicious, which spices do you go for?” Julia asked as the two of them both took a step forward with the movement of the line, readjusting her bag on her shoulder. Her own ability to cook was subpar to say the least - mainly because she just didn’t have time. Between hospital shifts she was either trying to catch up on sleep, doing extra research for her cases, or (very) occasionally seeing the few friends she had remaining in the city. Or at least the few that she’d made aware she was back again, keeping the return under wraps for her own wellbeing honestly. “Yes, it sounds like maybe you need to do some kind of brunch with your friends in order to give it the proper appreciation.” That was something people did still, right? Brunches at the weekend? She hadn’t been to one in years. @infragilehearts

It was fairly rare that Julia had time to(or allowed herself) to talk about things that weren’t in some way relating to medicine or her patients which meant whichever poor sod was saddled with her when the inclination struck was forced to listen to her musings. “Yeah, I know what you mean. Mostly I just have to lock myself in an on call room if I want some quiet, even then people end up knocking on the door to get me to do something. It’s not quite as calm as out here.” She half smiled, knowing it was her own fault since she was the one who remained at the hospital even when she didn’t have to be, it helped occupy her brain. “Sometimes the quiet isn’t really…that good of an idea so maybe it’s for the best I don’t get out here that often.” @tctteredwings

It Was Fairly Rare That Julia Had Time To(or Allowed Herself) To Talk About Things That Weren’t In

"Let's hope so," Anna answered with a smile cast in Julia's direction, her shoulders lifting in a shrug a moment later. She wasn't all that bothered if her friend continued to ramble about things, it didn't make any difference to her, she'd listen all the same to whatever she had to say —- it couldn't be any worse than when she started talking about her gaming. At Julia's words, as they walked, she nodded her head. "Exactly why I come out here," she admitted simply. "In the mornings it's my thinking place. Quieter then, y'know?" There was a reason she loved to sit out there and watch the sun come up, enjoy the silence as a bunch of crazies jogged past.

“Well, let’s chalk it up to being a team effort from everyone shall we?” Julia wanted him to know she was grateful but a pet peeve of hers was when she ended up in a circular flattery situation where everyone was trying to argue someone else was more worthy of the compliment. She just felt like it was inefficient - and after all efficiency was one of her favourite things. “I’m very grateful to you all and I’m sure the family will be as well.” Even if the worst happened, which was always a terrible thing to have to deal with but Julia was making a point to set aside that concern as she walked further away from the little girl’s hospital room. It would weigh on her heavily enough when she returned to caring for her so for now she would select to put it into the pit deep down where all her stresses were squashed. Threatening one day to make an appearance when it overflowed no doubt. That was a horrific thought.

Nodding once with a grateful smile she accepted, letting out a small humming noise, because coffee was something she was always willing to take if it was on offer. “Ryen, lovely to meet you too.” There was an air about him that made the woman unsurprised that his career was what it was, because even in his handshake there was safety in the firmness. Assurance that he was about to do the most extreme of rescues - she was almost envious of that level of assurance being exuded. Punching the elevator number they needed for the cafeteria she glanced over at him as it was mentioned his partner had spoken about her before they’d even arrived at the hospital. It was an ego boost for sure, especially for someone who poured their everything into their work. “Well, that was very kind of them to say. They’re right though, i’m new to this hospital. I’ve been in Boston since finishing medical school but when the job here came up I realised I would be a fool not to take it. I’m from New York originally so it wasn’t too jarring of a move.” The doors slid open to reveal another floor of the labyrinth like hospital, prompting her to lead the way towards clattering that signalled various people trying to fuel themselves for whatever they had upcoming. “Are you from here?” @caddel

“Well, Let’s Chalk It Up To Being A Team Effort From Everyone Shall We?” Julia Wanted Him To Know
“—our EMTs Give Their All Till We Can Do That, So…” It Wasn’t Fair To Take Credit, It Is Always

“—our EMTs give their all till we can do that, so…” it wasn’t fair to take credit, it is always a team effort ( sometimes is an effort alright, between a couple of them and the Chief trying not to murder one another on the scene ). even after all these years having experienced people’s true, honest gratitude, and thankfulness for what they do, it’s always nice to know their good efforts do make a difference. most of the times; and the times which they don’t are the ones they hold on and haunt them. like, in this instance, that they know how difficult the situation is for the girl —they know they did the best they could, and still they don’t know if she is really going to make it or if they really did make any difference. and yet he would rather have the chief on his back any time rather than live and bear the guilt of not doing enough. he smiled at her words, a soft but sincere smile. the only thing he really heard a lot of was usually a good mixture of ‘fuck, Caddel!’ paired with ‘don’t you fucking dare,’ topped up with, his personal favorite, ‘that’s a fucking order, ya hear?!’ as if any of these would ever be enough to persuade him to not do what his mind was already fixed on. “let’s hope we did for her…” he offered. he had promised they would do their best to her mom, and Dr.Sato had done her best too, he was sure, he wanted to bring the woman no other news than her little girl pulling through.

a soft smile tugged on his lips at her words; he doesn’t have to, he wants to. “please, take it as a thank you,” he offered. the outcome might still be unclear, but she had rushed to receive the patient at the ER as soon as they had entered —them transporting a patient instead of the ambulance wasn’t a very common occurrence, but when they did it meant there was no room to wait for another ambulance on scene or the EMTs couldn’t leave scene, but the patient had to be admitted immediately. they had, of course, the station’s ambulance for that, most of them were trained on basic care, but tonight there was no room to wait, hence they had gotten in the first truck and drove over. they always called while on the way, to let the hospital know they were coming in, what to expect, and they would still have to rush them to the ER before anyone came to look at them. “nice to meet you, Julia,” he nodded, shaking her head. “please just call me Ryan,” he added as they began walking to the elevator. his mind was still stuck on the little girl, but it would not do them any good to keep talking about it. “my partner said you are new here,” he said instead, “and you have quite a reputation of being, quote, the best at what you do.”

Julia hadn’t meant to fall asleep in the on-call room, really she hadn’t, but what she had intended to do was wait until the little girl she’d been tending to for over a week now got out of surgery. Knowing Rhys was going to be in the operating room was certainly a comfort but that didn’t stop the doctor from wanting to hear the word stable come out of someones mouth before she finally left for the night. However three back to back shifts had caught up with her and as soon as her head hit the regulation polyester pillow she had drifted off.

Sitting up with a jolt she blinked, looking around in a haze. “Hmm? What? I’m awake. Has someone coded?” Immediately ready to leap into an emergency situation if that’s what was needed, but then her eyes fell on Rhys and she let out a soft breath. “Shit, I didn’t know I’d fallen asleep. What time is it?” Wait, if he was here it meant he was out of surgery - finally she could get the answer she wanted. “How did it go? How is she?” It wasn’t that she was getting too invested, no she just wanted to make sure her job was done properly before checking out because Julia knew when she walked out those hospital doors she would have to detach from what went on inside to further fend of all the stress and emotion that she’d squished down for the last sixteen years for her own good. @tctteredwings

Julia Hadn’t Meant To Fall Asleep In The On-call Room, Really She Hadn’t, But What She Had Intended

For: @doctorjuliasato Location: The Hospital

Time was getting on ( which really wasn't anything new ), but Rhys finally found himself at a point where he felt he could actually leave and head back home. He was probably one of the worst people for that, hanging on and on until he finally felt it was okay to leave everyone to their own devices. Of course, hanging around forever wasn't a good thing either, it would leave you worn out and unable to do the job properly. It was a case of trying to find a happy medium.

On his way out, after going through his stuff, he realised he must have left something in the on-call room earlier when checking in on someone, so that would be his last stop today. As he made his way into the room, knocking gently as he did, he found a laugh escaping as he found Julia curled up there. "Hey... Jules," he started softly. "Jules!" He let his voice rise a little on the last. "You ever going home tonight or do I have to drag you there?"

Julia always found these kinds of the cases hard - obviously they all were, she was a doctor, but she’d gotten incredibly good at compartmentalising. If she had to go on a talent show that would probably be what she went for because really it was like an elite sport for the woman at this point. She’d spent the last three hours on the same case which was always draining but one the plus side things were looking a lot more positive than they had been when the one year old was rushed into the NICU. Slipping their chart back into the pocket at the end of the crib she let out a soft sigh, wishing she could just melt onto the floor in the foetal position for a little while to disassociate but she had to wait. She had to finish up her shift. Maybe then she could go home and crawl under the duvet for a little while. She wouldn’t cry. Julia rarely did when it came to patients she’d cared for during the day, it was few and far between, but she’d allow the emotion to wash over her in a way she wouldn’t while she was donning her scrubs and stethoscope.

She was surprised to see the man still sat in the waiting room but it warmed even her very tired heart. It wasn’t a requirement of the job she was almost certain yet here he was waiting no doubt to hear about the little girl, it was enough to have a little smile grace her features. “Mr Caddel - I didn’t expect to still see you here. You must be exhausted.” Voice empathetic since it was four in the morning at this point. “I'm Doctor Rebeiro. You did an excellent job timing wise, it saved her a lot of potential complications. Obviously what I can tell you about the patient is limited since you’re not immediate family but I can reassure you that despite the upper airway burn the patient is responding well to intubation. We thought it best to air on the side of caution considering they’re so young.” Julia considered him with a compassionate expression. “Have you eaten anything, had something to drink? I’m due my break if you’d like to join me in the cafeteria. I can promise you the coffee isn’t as bad as it’s rumoured to be.”

the door opened and he was immediately up. he wanted to hear that they had at least made it in time, judging by the amount of time that had passed since they first rushed inside, news had to be somewhat positive, right? he couldn’t even find it in him to ask anything upon seeing the young doctor walk out; simply stood there expectantly, waiting. Heading out of a patients room the doctor heard the familiar voice of Gavin’s dulcet tones drifting past the noise of machines beeping mixed with the overhead intercom calling various medical staff to different parts of the hospital. Waving back albite it a little more subdued, she slipped her pen into the front pocket of her white coat. “Fancy seeing you here. No, no I’m not allergic to blueberries, at least not last time I ate one, so I’m pretty certain I’ll live to tell the tale this time too.” Smiling at him warmly because truthfully the sweet treat was coming at exactly the right time, the man had no way of knowing that of course but her morning had been pretty fucking brutal in ways she’d like to forget even just for ten minutes.

“You didn’t have to do this - thank you.” His sunny disposition might be a stark contrast to how somber hers so often was but that didn’t mean he always managed to lift her mood. His mom was one of her favourite nurses in the whole place, maybe that was why she’d taken so much to him as well. “The blueberry muffin is perfect. I don’t want to drag you away from your muffin man mission any longer than needed by forcing you across the street - are you looking for your mom? I think I saw her heading towards Radiology about twenty minutes ago.” @mrmcrch

Heading Out Of A Patients Room The Doctor Heard The Familiar Voice Of Gavin’s Dulcet Tones Drifting

it was after a shift at the station that gavin had decided to pop up to the hospital to see his mom, having picked up her favorite soup from santiago's and entering the building with a skip in his step, happily greeting the receptionist and dropping off a cookie to them on his way to the elevator and meets with one of the ladies on the third floor to ask if his mom is available at the moment, nodding and bouncing in place as the woman calls his mother's room to let her know of his arrival, and playing a game of continuously sliding the packaged brownie back to the blond as he keeps trying to slide it back towards her as she speaks to clara.

it's here when he spots the familiar, newer face he was getting more acquainted with since she had started and gavin perks up, smile widening as he calls out to her with a wave. "julia! i've got a muffin here for ya with your name on it...." he drawls out, looking through his bag in search of said snack. "...wait, you're not allergic to blueberries, are ya? that would really suck...but! i could pick out somethin' else for you at the cafe?...or maybe we can go across the street if you're sick of the stuff here...i know my mom can be sometimes." he snorts softly at the thought.

Julia smiled, a real smile that filtered up to her eyes making them warm, because something sweet like that for no other reason than being kind was…unexpected. She appreciated it through, immediately warming to the man in front of her. “I’m going to consider it a good sign for my day moving forward. As for needing it…you aren’t wrong. I’m a doctor, just came off a fourteen hour shift, so this out of nowhere kindness is something I didn’t know I needed but it turns out maybe I very much did.” A soft laugh as she pushed a hand through her bedraggled hair, sighing just after. His playful nature was refreshing after the weight of everything that was going on at work. “Is this something you do often, Sebastian? Showing kindness to strangers in the form of caffeine?” @sebastianxwinters

Julia Smiled, A Real Smile That Filtered Up To Her Eyes Making Them Warm, Because Something Sweet Like

Sebastian smiled over at Julia who had just now introduced who she was. He thought she was pretty. Of course not his taste and god knows what was going on with Austin now. The two had gotten cozy with one another and he was incredibly happy for that but his actions lately could've jeopardized that drastically. "Nice to meet you as well, Julia." He replied as he then chuckled at her question. "Well I guess I just wanted to do something nice for somebody and you happened to be the luckily one and it seems that I picked well because you seem to need it." He replied, sliding her a playful smirk. @doctorjuliasato

Julia nodded at the mention of not thinking about actually working here, but the sad reality was a lot of their patients were here for a while - and there would be something to be said for them being able to have help with their schoolwork from a friendly face. “You can of course leave them around for parents who are just bringing their children in for outpatient treatment or shorter stays, but if you were up for doing some work with out more long term patients that would also be an attractive prospect for us.” It was true their parents were dealing with big hospital bills (something Julia took great issue with but had no control over) but at the same time she didn’t feel right in this woman not getting paid either. “Well perhaps there is some way we could work out a reduced rate for patients, after all it’s not fair that you don’t get paid for your work.”

“Charlie, lovely to meet you, I’m Doctor Julia Sato.” Glancing down at the pamphlet where sure enough it stated Charlie’s name where she pointed. As for the anxiety it was understandable, a lot of people found hospitals anxiety inducing, which is why she gave her what she hoped was a reassuring smile. “It’s understandable, but there is really no need to be anxious. I know hospitals can be stressful but I promise we don’t bite.” @callmecharliejones

Julia Nodded At The Mention Of Not Thinking About Actually Working Here, But The Sad Reality Was A Lot

"I do up to ages about, um ten? eleven? and I... actually haven't thought about working here." Charlie said nodding at the doctor curiously but of course kids that had long stays at the hospital might need some help keeping up with school. Even though they shouldn't, they probably had enough to deal with if they were ill. "Oh but I can't possibly charge for that, honestly. That'd be heartless, right? They're ill, their parents probably have too much on their mind already." She pouted to herself, already feeling sad about the whole situation but wanting to do it anyway.

She looked up at the other and gave her a small smile. "Sorry, I'm Charlie." She pointed at the pamphlet in the doctor's hand. "And I'm way too sensitive and terrible with hospitals. And when I'm anxious, I can't stop talking. Nice to meet you."

Julia rolled her eyes, laughing softly, sure while he was technically right that didn’t mean she wouldn’t have made it his problem if it had actually happened. Just to make a point. “Oh really? Look at you - passing judgment on other hard working medical professionals. Although I did see Doctor Fitz as I was leaving so I can’t say you’re wrong.” Looking through the box as she spoke, considering her options, ending up going for the biggest, gooiest one in there so she could really indulge, nodding her head as she took a big bite. “I know - shocking isn’t it? Funnily enough I like my coffee to taste like…well … coffee.” Nodding as she gestured for them to head off, taking another bite of the pastry. God it was good. “How was your shift?” @dannyhq

Julia Rolled Her Eyes, Laughing Softly, Sure While He Was Technically Right That Didn’t Mean She Wouldn’t

"sorry," he couldn't help but laugh despite his apology. "but, uh... technically incorrect because i'm off work now. you'd be someone else's problem," a flash of a mischievous smile. "though i honestly wouldn't recommend havin' a heart attack right now, with that staff on shift." danny steadied the box as julia looked through it, shrugging off her gratitude -- of course he saved her some, it was only the fair thing to do. otherwise the whole lot would've been gone in seconds, and the one person left who actually helped that patient, would miss out. "you deserve it," he countered simply. "oh what? you're tellin' me you don't like coffee that somehow tastes like ass? so weird." a brief pause. "yes, inkwells. absolutely. you got everythin' you need?"

"sorry," He Couldn't Help But Laugh Despite His Apology. "but, Uh... Technically Incorrect Because I'm
