Writing Prompt: A Plaque Denoting The Hero Of Ferelden’s Birthplace

Anora wouldn’t shut up.  Wouldn't stop blathering on about Alistair this, Alistair that, like she hadn't been ready to throw him to the wolves just weeks ago.

Tabris sat straight-backed in her chair, dry-eyed and stone-faced.  These shem wouldn't see her cry.

When she finally wound down, the grand cleric nodded at two servants.  Elves, Ris noted bitterly.

"We send you to the Maker's side."  At her words, the pyre was lit.  They had to treat bodies with something to make them so . . .combustible.  Alistair's body caught instantly, and the smoke stung her eyes.

The rest of the mourners started filing out of the courtyard, but she stayed put, hoping the attendants would leave too, just so she could have a moment alone with him once more.

"Warden Tabris."  The queen was approaching.

She didn't move to stand.  Didn’t even flick an ear.

Anora smiled thinly.  "I know you and my husband's brother were . . .close."

Fuck you.  Ris just nodded.  She might have power now, but it wouldn't last, even if she had put this bitch on the throne.  "And?"

"Is there anything he'd want?"

To be alive.  She shook her head.  "Nothing you can give."  It wasn't a politically savvy answer and she didn't care.

Anora sniffed delicately.  "I know what it's like to -"

"Go away, your majesty."  She pointedly turned back to the pyre.  Alistair was already ash and she'd never been able to say goodbye.

She didn't go away, but she did finally stop talking.  Ris ignored her as she watched the ash blow away.  Her eyes burned with tears, but she wouldn't cry.  Not in front of her of all people.

Only when the fire died down and the last few attendants started to sweep up what was left of him did she stand, still not acknowledging Anora.  The bitch followed her as she walked out.  "Warden, would you walk with me?"

She bit back the Do I have a choice? and just nodded again.

Ris followed her through the winding corridors of the palace.  Anora collected a few more guards as they continued out the front gates.  They headed toward the alienage.  Years of practice kept her face neutral, but nothing about this felt right.  What is she playing at?

The vhenadahl looked the same: sickly, but trying.  Just like the alienage itself.  Shianni was talking with Alarith nearby, and headed toward her as they approached.

"Your majesty," she said, nodding respectfully, before falling in next to Ris.  "I told them not to," she muttered, so softly only an elf could hear it.

Before Ris could ask what Shianni meant, Anora clapped her hands.  There was a sudden cacophony of trumpets, and only Shianni's hand on her elbow stopped Ris from drawing her blades and falling into a defensive crouch.

"We've gathered here to honor one of our own: an elf from Denerim, who saved us all!  The greatest elf since Garahel"  Anora'a voice was resplendent and insincere.  A politician's voice.  "She saved us from certain doom, stopped the Blight in barely a year!  How should we thank her?"

Leave me alone, Ris wanted to scream.  Wanted to, but didn't.  Not when confronted by all that fucking hope on the faces of the gathered onlookers.  This was what heroes did, she supposed.  Fought and died by inches, giving others a chance to keep going.  She didn't even recoil when Anora grabbed her hand and hoisted it to the sky.  "Behold, our Hero of Fereldan!"

The crowd cheered.

She held her tongue and smiled.  Anora nodded at her, like she could see through it, like she knew Ris was fantasizing about cutting her throat.  "We'll build you a statue later, but this is all we can do for the moment."  She let go of Ris' hand and pointed at the vhenadahl.

Ris followed her gesture with her eyes, despair turning into horror.

It was a gold plaque.  Nailed to the tree.

Birthplace of Kallian Tabris, Hero of Ferelden, 9:10.

They'd poisoned the only thing that mattered in the alienage to honor her.  Her gaze swung to Shianni, begging her mutely to tell her this wasn’t happening.  Her cousin only shrugged, then low under her breath, mumbled, "Fucking shem."

Fucking shem indeed.  To the void with appearances.  Ris fled.

Hi happy DADWC! Could I get Alistair & Zevran in the KMH!au with the platonic prompt ❛ i know, i know. i’m the best. ❜

AHHH thank you for giving me a Knight My Heart prompt!! I do apologise, this isn't quite the fluff I thought it was going to be 😅

Rated T. Zevran POV. One-sided Zellian (zevwarden). Background Kallistair (aliwarden) for @dadrunkwriting. 461 words.

*

Kallian Tabris snuck up on him like an assassin in the night. Not literally, of course, he was far too good for that, but metaphorically? He was an unsuspecting lamb to her slaughter.

She never washed her dishes. Well, she did, but she always left them far too long. She sang loudly when he had guests over and didn't care. Her dog ate all of his expensive imported chocolate from home and she cried worrying over the mutt. She put empty milk bottles back in the fridge.

They'd met in ridiculous circumstances. He'd broken her best friend's heart or something or other, so she decided to really let him have it one drunken night at the Student Union. He let her. The next weekend she realised she'd gotten him mixed up with some other devilishly handsome man, and bought him a drink to apologise.

He probably should have seen the whole thing coming when he thought she was going to hit him. Literally, not metaphorically.

Unbeknownst to him, it all spiralled from there, behind some door he'd long since lost the key for.

They shared a house with friends in university, then a flat with fewer friends after graduating, and the friends just kept dropping until it was only the two of them.

It had been a little... strange, to watch her success. From two out of work actors, two painfully stereotypical struggling artists, to... one. He was happy for her, of course, but the locked door began to shake in its frame as he wondered how long everything would last.

She hadn't shut up about that human. He'd turned out to be devastatingly plain after all that. But he wasn't blind either. The internet had seen their chemistry too, it was the only reason she'd been invited back. Her words.

Kallian being Kallian, she'd gotten him an audition as soon as she could.

It was nice to work together.

Zevran being Zevran, he fucked it up.

There was a time when it all came to a head. People had noticed their chemistry as well, which made her flustered, which made him bold. But not bold enough.

The slow fading smiles. The pause at her bedroom door. The silence after wishing each other goodnight. He should have kissed her.

"Thank you so much, Zev, this really means a lot," Alistair said earnestly after the final full stop in his fucking notebook.

He should have had some balls, or self-respect, and told Alistair where to go for advice on dating Kallian Tabris.

But Alistair was nice.

And Zevran wasn't. Not enough. Not for her.

"Really!" Alistair grinned, open and without guile in a way that he had no idea how to be.

"I know, I know," Zevran smiled. "I'm the best."

Dilwyn And Gethon’s Camp Supper

Dilwyn and Gethon’s Camp Supper

Adaia’s old friends knew her from her adventuring days, and often shared food and stories around the campfire. The menu is nothing exciting: whatever they caught, brought, or foraged, but for Dilwyn and Gethon, the memories lasted forever.

Menu:

“Rabbit” Stew with Dumplings

Roast Apples

Shopping List:

flour

apples

onion

parsley

sage leaves

8 ounces mushrooms

butter

3 pound rabbit or chicken

Gethon’s “Rabbit” Stew

It’s a little bland, but it keeps body and soul together. Rabbit can be purchased from larger markets or specialty provisioners, but substitution and improvisation form the backbone of this recipe, so chicken or Cornish hens will do just as well. Odds are good that Gethon himself made it with chicken plenty of times, or squirrel, or any other small game they had on hand. If you don’t have eggs to make the dumplings, add ¼ cup more water and accept that the dumplings will be very dense.

1 3-pound chicken or rabbit

1 large onion

2 whole sage leaves

handful parsley

8 ounces mushrooms

salt to taste

3 cups flour

1 tsp salt

3 Tbsp butter

2 eggs

½ cup water

Cut the meat apart at the joints, skinning the carcass, but leaving the bones in. Arrange in the bottom of a pot just large enough to hold the meat without stacking it. Cut the onion into a ½ inch dice and toss it and the remaining ingredients on top of the rabbit. If you have leeks or greens, toss them in, too. Add water to within half an inch of the top layer of vegetables. Cover the pot, put over the hottest part of the  fire and bring it to a boil, then move it off the fire slightly (or turn down the heat) and simmer until the meat is very tender and the vegetables are soft, at least 1 hour. The vegetables will sweat out their juices and contribute liquid to the stew, and the longer this cooks, the more flavor it has. Season to taste with salt and continue to simmer while you prepare the dumplings.

Combine the flour with the salt and rub in the butter until it resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in the eggs and the water and mix to form a dough. Drop by rounded spoonfuls onto the surface of the simmering stew, cover, and cook until the dumplings are cooked through, about 10 minutes.

Dilwyn’s Roast Apples

Dilwyn was never as fond of cooking as her husband Gethon, so she leaves the bulk of the meal preparation to him and contents herself with making a little something to round things out. Quantities are rather pointless, as the procedure is the same whether you are roasting one apple or a dozen.

Core apples, wrap in kitchen foil, and roast in the embers or on the grill until the apples are soft, about 30 minutes. Serve with honey, if desired.
