When I Made This Blog: 4th August 2018 - that long ago, huh?
Reason For My URL: I study chemistry at uni, and I really like baking. I also wanted some alliteration :)
I’m going to tag @crimsonvenus @coffee-and-conjugations @translatorwannabe @rosethaturtl @bestudy @white-carrots @sloth-stubies @russianwave @watchmestudyandstuff @simplyconnectedstudy - you guys are some of my newest followers and I’d love to get to know you (but only if you want to participate - I won’t be offended if not!)
I can’t believe September just disappeared! Anyway, I had the morning off school so I analysed chapters 2 and 3 of the first part of Der Vorleser in preparation for tomorrow’s lesson, and I also finished some chemistry graphs. Then I read some L’invitée (nope, still not done with that 😂) and am currently binge watching documentaries about genetics, epigenetics and genetic disorders. Also, Khan Academy videos about the lac and trp operons. Highly awesome.
Can you tell I love genetics?
Also: have a tiny potato. It’s not mine and I don’t know who created it but I feel like I want to share this because it makes me smile.
Have a great week!
No pictures today - sorry! I’m a bit rushed but I thought I’d update to prove I can finish what I started hehe
I spent an hour reviewing German vocab I learned last year in my last free period of the day, and I also got all my homework completed in time for the weekend. That included biology and chemistry. I got a lot out of my lessons today - I had my first lesson with a teacher I haven’t had since Year 9 (and I’m in Year 13 now!)
(I’m off to Nottingham tomorrow for a uni open day, so I can’t work)
I hope you’ve all had productive days!
This is amazing!
here is a gif showing how blood flows through the heart in case you need extra motivation
What an awesome way to turn 18! Although I could have gone to more museums and just generally done more, the stuff I did do was fantastic and I’m sharing with you a really important point of interest. Yeah we did the Reichstag and the Brandenburger Tor and the East Side Gallery - and the Deutsches Spionagemuseum (which was amazing!), but I think one of the most profound landmarks we visited was the Denkmal für die ermordeten Juden Europas.
I wanted to take time to see the memorial for the murdered Jewish people of the Holocaust and really just wander and ponder. It’s such an eerily tranquil place - a black hole in the middle of a bustling city. It’s disorienting and yet peaceful. Claustrophobic and rigid but very organic and human too, somehow.
I vow to make my adulthood one that will ensure that such immense suffering never happens again.
This week, I learned about organometallic catalysts for propene polymerisation. I found it an interesting topic, though frustrating: despite understanding the process, I can’t visualise the process to rationalise which catalyst gives which product. That’s kind of the whole point of the catalysts, and I was annoyed that I was fighting (and losing) an uphill battle. But that’s okay, because I found a way around my problem.
I wanted to make a 3D animation of the process since I couldn’t find any, though that would actually require my learning how to model molecules and animate them - that’s a little beyond my skill set right now. Learning to animate molecular processes is long-term goal I have set myself as a little side project, but for now I’ll have to settle for more traditional means. So, I drew the process out and made a graphic for my reference instead.
Software: Autodesk Sketchbook for iPad
Uni has worked me very hard this week, but the highlight was definitely being introduced to organometallics. These are some notes on bonding models of pi-acceptor ligands!
Coming up next week: revision for summer exams begins! My aim is to beat my Christmas exam marks - let’s do this!
Well fam, 6 hours of solitary confinement and two exams later I can say with 100% certainty I will not get A*s in German or Maths ahahahaha
16/08/18 So studying languages is amazing but I also love sciences and there is an introductory lecture tomorrow about pharmacokinetics that I unfortunately am not attending. However, it looked like fun so I’m reading up on it myself and making some notes for something to do because it’s 22:14 right now. I’m not a person to specialise in just one thing 😫
Can we talk about how hard it is physically and mentally to take exams with IBS that won’t quit. Would not wish it on my worst enemy - I am exhausted and all I could think about for my six hour stay in solitary confinement was how much my stomach hurt
