I'm very interested in the ways in which Alain was insane, could you please elaborate? <3
Oh yeah of course!!
When he was younger, he did some wild stunts:
for example, iirc certain rental car companies banned him from renting out cars because he, Villeneuve, and Pironi had a game they’d play during testing where they’d rent out family sedans and see who could inflict the worst damage by purposefully crashing them on hillsides and back roads. Also a similar incident, he and Elio De Angelis were driving back drunk after a party, Elio complained that when Prost parked in front of their hotel he’d stopped too far away, and so Alain drove the car through the lobby of the building and basically went “this close enough for you?” He lied to the military during drafting so he could continue to race, hung up on Enzo Ferrari multiple times just because he thought his friends were playing jokes, also just simply even the fact that he managed to break his nose like 4 goddamn times speaks to the caliber of stuff he was up to.
Emotionally though, a lot of his craziness is influenced by grief, he had a very Charles Leclerc-esque beginning because the whole reason he started racing was because his brother (who later died) did. They were really close and it really influenced his decision to keep racing, all the way through to f1. Also, he really had to sharpen his media skills and soft political power in the paddock, because the French media basically hated him and it was partly why he left Renault in the first place. Then ofc there were all the deaths of his friends, but what it seemed to leave him with mentally was a state of learned and quiet ruthlessness, but also a paranoia about exactly the kind of figure Senna turned out to be.
So TLDR: a lot of stuff from when he was young and his career was just starting forced him to build up a lot of walls, and he was really effective at swaying a team to him just by mingling and talking. Obviously he had the passion to drive which already makes a person a little crazy, but the deaths of so many friends made him cautious of another driver who was so cutting and brute-forced his way through everything, because he and his friends in f1 used to be that way and said friends had died.
But in terms of physical craziness, he just got up to a lot of shenanigans when he was young and more or less naive to the injuries racing could cause
so yeah Alain was almost just as emotional and crazy as Ayrton, he just never had the luxury of wielding that emotion freely like Senna did
And it's all too much for little lando norris 💤🛌
