Her voice was familiar not only because of his dreams but because of some nagging sensation in the back of mind. So many times before he had heard her speak his name and every single time it would bring him a raw sense of happiness. All he wanted to do was wrap his arms around her frame and shield her from the world. He wanted to protect her but what would he protect her from? This town may not be perfect but it wasn’t all that bad. It wasn’t dangerous unless you wandered in the woods at night. He wouldn’t let anything happen to her. He refused.

“I feel many things when I look into those eyes of yours. I have dreamt of you. Of your voice and the sound of your laugh. How could that be when I have not met you before? How could that be when I have searched high and low for you only to be met with blank stares. No one is like you and that is confusing”

Geralt was a normally grumpy, cold and brutal man who hid his heart and emotions from the rest of the world in order to keep himself safe. But around this woman all those walls just fell to the ground and his heart was exposed. In his hands was his beating heart and it was yearning for the other.

“Please just tell me”

image

⊱ ──────────── {⋆⌘⋆} ──────────── ⊰

The hand that was placed atop his between them gripped tighter, and the other moved to his face, a thumb smoothing over the crease in his brow. A silent urging to relax. She always thought him beautiful, scars, rough edges, and all.

Yennefer cupped his cheek, pad of her thumb sweeping over it for a moment before moving it to rest in the center of his sternum. Forcing a smile, “Fine, I will tell you. Believe me or not, know that I do not lie, especially not to you. This town, wretched place, is not all it seems. Some find their minds… distorted. Memories gone, emptiness or new ones in their place. You seem to be one of those few. You don’t know anyone like me, because there isn’t anyone who could ever match up. I am one of a kind, as you once told me,” her smile went a bit more genuine before falling again.

“You’ve met me before, of course. We are…” she never knew the word for their bond. Not friends (no matter how many times they had made that joke). Dating was too silly. They certainly weren’t married. “We are important to one another. Very important.  Neither of us are very good at saying it, but I..”

Love you. She couldn’t finish it. Not now.

Yennefer leaned up, difference in height aided by the slight platform of her boots. She placed a gentle kiss to the corner of his mouth, swiping the light transfer of lipstick away with her knuckle. Not realizing how much it would affect her, she let go of him, turning away. Jaw clenched, looking up to the grey sky, eyes tightly shut in prayer that she wouldn't begin to cry.

“It is great to see you as well, Samwise” they said and smiled softly. It had been a slow process but it was one they were not finished with. It would take some time and they knew that. But it was only natural to have moments of frustration when things went on for a little too long and a little too slowly. All they wanted was for everything to get back to normal. But would things ever be like they once were? Zelda had just endured a life or death situation. They now had stories to tell that she didn’t want to even utter out loud. This would linger forever.

“Oh do come in. I could make us some lunch if you want to?” the brunette asked, tilting their head as they moved to the side so Sam could enter her and Link’s home.

image

⊱ ──────────── {⋆⌘⋆} ──────────── ⊰

To be able to hear Zelda’s voice was a comfort in and of itself. She was more important to him than most people in this place (even if he couldn’t pinpoint why that was).

“I could never turn down a meal when it's offered, but only if you’re up to it, mind you.” He was a Hobbit after all, and they had seemingly bottomless stomachs. It was a rare occasion for any one of them to turn down a good plate of food. Sam made his way inside, careful to keep his dish upright.

With a little gesture with it, he smiled at them. “Made the pair of you somethin if’n you don’t feel up to cooking. Do you want me to set it in the kitchen?” Sam had been there only once before, but he could find his way if needed.

She didn’t understand this land, not at all. Monsters and elves were far easier to understand than things like cars and headphones. What she did understand was the way her mother’s hand felt in hers,  how things would eventually be alright. Yennefer would die than let anything hurt Ciri. The blonde knew this like she knew her own heartbeat. A comforting, ever-there weight.

“You sound too much like Uncle Vesemir. You might just summon him with those words,” She smiled. Zireael had been a comfort she clung to her first few nights in this town, quite literally. It was proof that everything had happened, that she still had her family, somewhere out there. In a strange world with things she didn’t understand, the sword she knew as an extension of her own body was her solace. “Not a Witcher yet. Never, if Father gets his way.”

Ciri nodded, listening intently. Five months. Yennefer had been without her and Geralt for five whole months. “I’m surprised you haven’t burned the place down. I never thought you would ever work for anyone, the Council included.”

image

⊱ ──────────── {⋆⌘⋆} ──────────── ⊰

Everything about this town left Yennefer cold, the kind of chill that sank into her bones and stayed there despite any effort to chase it away. Holding onto Ciri was the first touch of warmth she had felt in months. She would do anything imaginable to keep that warmth from slipping from her grasp.

“Could you imagine? I think the sight of a lightbulb would be far too much for him to process,” the idea of the grumpy witcher trying to navigate technology was extraordinarily amusing. “You’ll get there in time, daughter. He just wants to make sure you’re safe, it's a dangerous job after all. Takes years of training. To be without you is a fate unimaginable to either of us. But your work will pay off, I know it will.”

She did know. The Ciri of her time was a bit farther down The Path, and was shaping up to be quite the formidable opponent. From what she could discern, there was no Path to be found here, but she wouldn't be the one to tell Ciri not to practice. They neared the bed and breakfast before long, having been close to it to begin with. “Ah, yes. I had given up on employment in my late thirties, but one must make sacrifices when trying to get the things they want, my dear.”

When the cold was too biting, The Doctor was glad to have the antique shop to keep them at least somewhat occupied. It didn’t always work, their mind racing a mile a minute and the world around them moving painfully slow for a being who was used to being able to travel time at their whim. The weekends were normally better, a regular flow of people in and out of the shop to keep it from being entirely dull.

They were hanging a newly restored piece on the wall when they heard the bells jingling near the front. Never one to hurry when they weren’t of a mind to, they made sure it was placed just so before making their way to see their visitor. Stopping dead in their tracks, they had to tamp down the greeting that rose up in them. It felt like it had on that damnable Christmas, being looked at and looked right through.

“Hello,” sweetie, they forced to stay silent, dropping a few of the extra lenses down onto their jeweler’s spectacles as though it could help them understand. Or add a buffer. Either way. Their brogue had gone soft and they knew that Bill would have been staring at them. “How can I help you today?”

When River was faced with the attendant, something in her chest tightened. She didn’t understand the feelings that were quickly bubbling up in her. She looked at this stranger, knowing she hadn't met them before, yet she felt like she had known them her whole life. The look in their eyes made her nearly forget why she was there. What the hell was that all about!?

“I, erm,” she took a break, shaking her head in hopes of dispelling the weirdness she felt. “Sorry, long day at work. I just moved into town recently, and my flat is absolutely bare. I was looking to get a few things to make it a bit more home-like. A few lamps, carpets, decorations, a side table, that sort of thing.”

River drummed her fingers against the side of her leg, and then looked as though she was completely scandalized for a moment. She took a few steps forward and held out her hand, “I’m River, by the way. It's nice to meet you.”

ZSASZ’S BODY MOVEMENTS FROZE , settling into the stillness he often pulled off when during a stake out or when lining up a shot .  He was certain he hadn’t said any of that out loud .  Unless he was intoxicated , Zsasz was pretty good with that kind of thing .  He’d never understood stories where someone said something out loud they thought was only a thought .  And yet , here she was answering an unspoken question .  Slowly , very slowly , his brow bone rose .  Then he shifted , pushing his body into something more relaxed .  ❝ I hadn’t asked , though I appreciate the information .  I am not taken though , so you’ll have to try your luck elsewhere . ❞  There was a teasing bite to his words , a devious smirk on his lips .  ❝ My partner doesn’t share .  I’d offer to set you up , but my friend is back at home unfortunately . ❞

HE WAS CERTAIN SHE’D SOMEHOW PLUCKED THE THOUGHTS FROM HIS MIND .  maybe something in his body language had given it away , though even liz had a hard time reading him .  He had to decide if he wanted to push it or not , and eventually he decided it would be far more fascinating to  N O T  push it and see where things went .  He had very little to hide anyway .  ❝ I’m glad to see we still agree on these things .  People are fascinating , especially when you get them riled up . ❞

A fox caught in the hunt. That's what he looked like-- what they all looked like when she did it to them the first time. A devious little smile tugged at Yennefer’s lips as she watched the cogs turn behind his eyes. Likely, he would be running through possible explanations in his head. The mind never liked things it couldn’t explain. He was handling it interestingly enough, and if she were a bit more bored, she would've taken another peek.

She made a sound half between a scoff and a laugh. “Trust me, if I were looking to fuck someone, I wouldn't walk into a hunting store in the middle of a Thursday afternoon. And, while I appreciate the offer, I do quite well on my own.”

For a brief, annoying moment, she was hit with a pang of... well, she didn’t want to name the feeling. It was true. It was. But she was lonelier than she’d like to admit in this place. “The actions of those under duress are always intriguing to me, especially when I hold them in contempt. I think if I had been able to choose another career path, it could've had to do with studying the mind. Though, science where I come from pales in comparison to what this town has.”

⌘Midna & Jack Frost⌘

⌘Midna & Jack Frost⌘

for the lovely @snowballsandfun

Midna never let boredom take her for long. Unemployed though she was, she had enough friends and things to do to keep her busy most days. When those options failed her, she simply went out in search of something else to occupy her time.

At first it had manifested as an eagerness to give the forest a thorough exploration. Midna had met her fair share of interesting people and sights there. Then, she moved on to the rest of town proper. She acquainted herself well enough with the layout of houses and shops should she ever need any of them. It was after a few weeks of being there that she realised she hadn't explored much of the opposite end of town, near the coast.

All of her friends occupied with their own business, and wanting to remedy that fact, Midna decided to take the day to poke around the coast to look for something interesting.

She hadn’t been there ten minutes when she heard a voice from behind her that made her head swivel like an owl. She squinted a little against the sun, trying to get a better look at the person now standing there. Midna cocked her head to the side a little. “Sorry, come again? Couldn’t hear you.”

· · ┈─────── ⋆៹ ✩۪۟۟≭ ───────┈ · ·

Jenny was enjoying the outing to the school for the most part, but it also felt a little pointless. They weren’t going to learn anything new about the mysteries of the research center by accompanying them on an educational trip, except for how they twisted and trimmed (only their most innocent) research into easy, bitesize chunks for children to understand.

It was fun though, talking to the kids, encouraging their curious minds and telling them that they should get involved in science. With the first group of students finished, and the second group not for another hour, Jenny retreated to the break room for a breather. They had been looking through the tray of teas, almost about to select the green one, when they heard the curling haired woman telling them to choose the blue.

Jenny plucked it out of the tray and turned to give her a grin.

“Thanks, I appreciate it,” she said, dropping the tea bag into a mug and pouring hot water from the kettle over it. “I’m Jenny, with the research center. I’m guessing you’re faculty at this prestigious learning establishment?”

image

⊱ ──────────── {⋆⌘⋆} ──────────── ⊰

River waved a hand in a ‘don’t mention it’ fashion, and smiled at her. She was happy to save anyone (except the very annoying art teacher) the pain of that very nasty excuse for tea. The comment on the prestige of the school made her have to stifle a laugh.

“I wouldn’t go that far, but yes I am. River Song, and I teach year eight history and advanced history. Pleasure to meet you Jenny. Everyone seems to be buzzing about your little demonstration already… though, that could just be because the students get to escape class for half the day.” She paused, setting her pen down, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to be rude. I just meant that it's to be expected from teenagers. I’m sure it's a lovely presentation.” She hadn’t had the time to watch the first presentation due to her large stack of papers.

OH .  oh no .  This wasn’t good .  Sure , Bill didn’t know the extent of River’s relationship with the Doctor , but considering they were two thousand years old and only had two people’s pictures on their desk , Bill could easily figure that those two were important to them .  Really important .  And she didn’t remember them .  She thought they’d only just met .  Oh this was NOT good .

SHE SHOOK HER HEAD .  ❝ sorry .  maybe i’m confusing you with someone else .  It’s just , you look a lot like someone the Doctor has a picture of , but with how weird this town is I could be wrong . ❞  She wasn’t .  Especially since River had just confirmed that she was , well , River .  ❝ Sorry , you’re probably here for something .  The Doctor is out , but maybe I can help ya ? ❞

image

⊱ ──────────── {⋆⌘⋆} ──────────── ⊰

With a polite smile, River shrugged it off. A case of mistaken identity was no big deal, and that's what this had to be. There was no reason for the Doctor to be talking about her when she wasn’t around. Right? They had just met the other day.

“Not a problem, Bill. I suppose I do have a bit of a familiar face.” River glanced around the shop quickly, trying to identify something to buy to cover for the fact that the whole reason she had come in was to see a person that currently wasn’t here. A bit of disappointment rose in her chest at the lack of the Doctor’s presence, but she shoved it away quickly. Get over yourself, Song. River tucked some hair behind her ear and looked back to Bill. “No need to apologize. I am here for something, so help would be wonderful. This place is a bit of a maze, I’ve noticed.”

River gave a little laugh, and it became increasingly obvious why the Doctor would like her so much. It was a pretty sound that anyone would swear could brighten even the darkest of places. “The other day the Doctor said that there were supposed to be some new paintings and rugs coming in. Have those arrived by chance?”

— *•̩̩͙   c. & yennefer wilczynski  •̩̩͙* —

━━━━━━━━━    *•̩̩͙ ♔ •̩̩͙* ━━━━━━━━━

Ciri pressed herself further into Yennefer, as if a simple embrace would be enough to quiet her mind, make her forget about being in a strange land with no one from home around here. Well, close to no one. Having Yennefer here with her was one of the best possible outcomes. She hadn’t allowed herself to hope her family would come, not with the aftermath of Cintra still fresh in her mind. That loneliness was still carved deep into her chest.

Yennefer being here, with her, stoked that hope within her. Ciri wouldn’t wish for more, she didn’t know if she could allow herself to wish for more of her family to come. It was dangerous. That one, terrible night had taught her so.

Ciri blinked back tears as she stared up at Yennefer, a watery smile gracing her face. “I thought I was going to be alone.” Again. Ciri felt her unspoken words would be too harsh, would cause this fragile moment between the two to break. “I can’t remember a thing after leaving Kaer Mohren after I-“ Destroyed it, killed the men I believed to be my family. Disappointed Geralt even though he would never say it. “-after everything. I know something happened, I know it. I just can’t remember.”

She didn’t deserve Yennefer being so understanding, so kind to her. Not after Yenn had to help clean up Ciri’s mess while she had laid there shivering, exhaustion and revulsion fighting for the dominant emotion in her body.

image

⊱ ──────────── {⋆⌘⋆} ──────────── ⊰

There were very few people Yennefer truly cared about. When she was a girl, she had locked her heart safely away, and kept it far from reach. It would protect her from getting hurt; it would keep her safe. Over the years, slowly, surely, she had built herself a little family. Her little family. To have even part of it back... she couldn’t be more grateful.

Maybe it wasn’t the exact Ciri she had been waiting for, but it was her daughter nevertheless, and that was all that she cared about. She cupped the girl’s face in her hand, gently swiping her thumb over her cheek. A wobbly smile on her face, Yennefer placed a kiss in the center of her forehead.

“You’re not alone, now. I'm here, and I wont leave you. Not ever,” she said softly, with a reassuring look. “Don’t fret over any of that my dear. Its past, and far away. No need to dwell on it for the time being.”

She knew what Ciri meant, of course, but Yennefer would never hold anything over Ciri. Exhaling, Yen adjusted Ciri’s jacket in the way that only doting mothers can manage. “You should go get your bag. It won’t do you good to lose your things. Where are you staying? Do you- do you need some place to stay? I’d rather not be apart from you anymore.”

⌘Samwise & Harry⌘

@ambiticvs

Some days in Sallow Hills blended together for Sam. They trickled one into the next, uninterrupted in their passing. Other days held much more. In a town like this, it was a gamble on what the day would bring. So far, Samwise’s day had brought him little of interest (aside from finding one of the primula vulgaris he had been tending back to health had bloomed); it was so dull, he found himself half asleep while doing inventory at the front counter.

He shook his head in an attempt to knock some of the drowsiness out. In doing this, he knocked the notebook and pen onto the floor. ‘Ninnyhammer, Sam Gamgee’ he scolded to the empty room. With a sigh, he bent down to pick it up, and by the time he had risen, there was a person in the shop.

“Ah, hello! Can I help you with something?”
