One of the funniest consequences of attending any concert after binging TMA/TMAGP episodes is that apparently you keep imagining everyone getting brutally Slaughtered as the sharp lights flash on their half hidden faces...
I love the idea that the 15th Doctor is one of the incarnations totally willing to manipulate his friends and companions, but he does it THROUGH laughs and smiles and charm, so much so that he barely even registers that that’s what he’s doing. Upbeat darkness.
Of course, “silly Doctor hiding a manipulative streak” is hardly new, but there’s a specific difference between, say, 7 using silliness to trick enemies but manipulating Ace more overtly, and 15 trying to manipulate Belinda, his potential new companion, USING his charm. It’s a (relatively) new angle on the Doctor’s manipulative behavior. I’m not gonna say it’s NEVER been done before (thousands of stories across several mediums over 60 years, I’m sure it’s cropped up), but this is the most overt example of the Doc using this specific manipulation tactic to my mind.
Belinda, having been the victim of a (clumsy) attempt at manipulation by Alan in the past, recognizes it right away and calls the Doc out, and he still doesn’t let the smile drop until he recognizes he isn’t gonna charm his way out of the situation.
And he KNOWS she’s right. But it almost makes him mad that she recognizes it too. You can see it on his face. He wants to argue back. But he knows she’s right, so he doesn’t.
The third Jon Snow chapter in A Game of Thrones is so funny when you consider the perspective of the other members of the Night’s Watch.
Since Jon arrived at Castle Black, he’s been withdrawn, sullen, and barely interacted with the others. He was a bastard, but he was also the son of one of the most important men in the entire kingdom, the warden of the north, and hand of the king, and the nephew of Benjen Stark, one of the most highly regarded men at the wall. He grew up alongside his true born halfsiblings at Winterfell and enjoyed an education very similar to theirs. He is one of the youngest people at the wall, yet easily beats the other new recruits in training, barely speaks a word to them afterwards, and instead spends most of his time with his creepy, silent dire wolf. In the words of Donal Noye, he was seen as an arrogant, sullen, reclusive bully, who thought he was better than anyone else.
Then, on some completely random day, he suddenly runs through castle black, the biggest grin ever on his face, which was probably the first time anyone there has seen him smile, whoops the whole time excitedly, that his brother is going to live, and joyfully spins Tyrion Lannister around in a cycle in front of everyone. Afterwards, he smiles at Grenn, who tried to beat him up not even an hour prior to that moment, offers to help him with his sword training and then quips back at Ser Alliser of all people, making the entire common hall laugh in the process.
Like, the switch-up was actually crazy as hell.
actually the reveal that there was no timeskip at all is hysterical. milchick really spent that whole weekend going all over town firing people, hiring people, putting together insane fruit baskets, and serving cunt in his motorcycle helmet. then at the orders of the board he had to very quickly fire the people he hired, rehire the people he fired, commission an oil painting for the severed floor lobby, redecorate the break room, and put together an award-winning claymation corporate apology video designed to showcase the new innie perks and reforms that don't exist as well as that one time helena eagan's innie sucked face with the innie whose outie his ex-boss is obsessed with. where is HIS waffle party
I know the doctor doesn't know what blink is other than safely assuming it's a weeping angels episode, but there's something truly hysterical in talking to the main character of your favorite show and telling him your favorite episode is one he's barely in 😭
