Dystopian worlds have become very popular lately. Whether it is Revolution, Falling Skies, The Walking Dead or Defiance, the one thing they all have in common is straight, cisgender, able bodied White male leadership. This suggests that at the end of the day, no matter the circumstance White masculinity represents authority, logic, safety, and intelligence. People of colour and women are often relegated to side characters who week after week submit to this authority and often times appear to be grateful for it. It is no accident that the White male is so revered in dystopians. It plays upon the idea that White straight masculinity is a declining power because of resistance by women, people of colour and of course GLBT people. It suggests that there will come a time when nature will correct itself and once again White men will rule the world, as though that is not the current situation and further; the world will be grateful for it.

Divergent. Hunger Games. The Uglies. Matched. How I live now... etc. etc. I know this article is talking only about TV Shows but it ignores so many Modern depictions of Dystopias where women are front and centre.
Young Adult Fiction is full of Dystopias, and has been since mid-2000s. Although dystopian fiction never stopped being produced, it emerged as a significant trend in Young Adult Fiction before it appeared on our TV Screens, suggesting that that the popularity (and profitability) of Dystopian tales in Young Adult Fiction influenced the creation of Dystopian TV Shows.
However the protagonists of Dystopian Fiction and Dystopian TV shows are different. This I believe is all down to who creates these stories. Most of the Dystopias in Young Adult Fiction are written by women, while men vastly outnumber women in media production. Even in YA Fiction written by men, such as Scott Westerfeld's The Uglies, girls are protagonists.
Furthermore the prominent heterosexual romantic subplot in a lot of these novels means that even when women are protagonists, male character still feature heavily and cooperation between the sexes is consistently needed.
Does this extra information change the point the author of this article was making? Not really. The old boys club running Television most likely does see 'White, straight masculinity as a declining power because of resistance by women, people of colour and of course LGBT people'. But its nice to know that people are telling stories beyond this.

"Danny Cohen, the head of BBC television, has confirmed that the BBC will no longer allow panel shows featuring all-male line-ups. Speaking to The Observer, he said: "We're not going to have any more panel shows with no women on them. You can't do that. It's not acceptable." As reported in December, the BBC Trust has set senior management new gender representation objectives, with producers told that there is now "no excuse" for not having women guests on comedy panel shows."

I'm sure anon's refusal to use even the basics of grammar, spelling or sentence structuring when critiquing your writing style was a purposeful linguistic choice, which was in no way meant to be ironic. However, I failed at understanding a single word. So kudos for deciphering this crap. And kudos for bothering to reply so nicely to such utter rubbish.

i’m sorry it came across that way. it honestly wasn’t my intention. i was just trying to explain that the way i write is ingrained with me, and although it may sometimes sound unnecessarily convoluted or pretentious (a criticism i’ve received before, which is why i assumed that was the source) it’s just my trying to answer asks as best as i can. if the criticism was levelled towards my attitude, i’m not sure what other indicators led them to that, although i apologise all the same.
The new Harry Potter area opening at Universal Orlando Resort this summer, called Diagon Alley, will offer fans a Gringotts bank thrill ride, along with more than a half-dozen eateries and shops selling wands and other souvenirs.
The new ride, Harry Potter and the Escape From Gringotts, described as Diagon Alley’s marquee attraction, will be an indoor ride through Gringotts’ bank vaults. A park spokesman said other kinds of experiences to be offered in Diagon Alley will be announced later.
Universal executives described the rich level of detail at Diagon Alley as “theatrical reality,” with shops selling souvenirs drawn from the Harry Potter books, such as supplies for Quidditch, a game played on broomsticks.
In addition to a previously announced eatery called the Leaky Cauldron, Diagon Alley will include Florean Fortescue’s Ice-Cream Parlour, where fans can nosh on Harry Potter’s favorite ice cream.
Among other shops in Diagon Alley:
Borgin and Burke’s, a shop devoted to dark arts that sells masks, skulls and other sinister items.
Madam Malkin’s Robes for All Occasions, where park visitors can buy Hogwarts school uniform ties, scarves and jumpers, wizard’s robes and character costumes.
Wiseacre’s Wizarding Equipment, where folks can buy telescopes, binoculars, armillary spheres, compasses, magnifying glasses and hourglasses.
Quality Quidditch Supplies, for Quidditch sweaters, brooms, Golden Snitches, Bludgers, Bludger bats and Quaffles — all items used to play the game featured in the book and movie.
Scribbulus, which will sell feather quills, ink and inkwells, bookmarks, journals, parchment paper, seals, stationery sets and postcards.
