Yes, Ao3 is down because of a cybersecurity attack.

Yes, the group is claiming to be Sudanese Muslims (Sudan Anonymous). No, this is not true.

This group has been identified as a Russian hacker group intent on sowing dissent between the world under the guise of “strengthening Middle East relations”. They targeted Ao3 because of its pro-LGBTQIA+ stories. Again, they are Russians sowing anger.

Do NOT be Islamophobic. Do NOT use this as an opportunity to whine about how you didn’t have time to finish reading a fic.

Ao3 is run by volunteers who are currently under siege by Russian hackers. Take this time to step back from the site, appreciate their work, write your own fics, or read a physical book.

Important alert re: Tumblr

Some of you may have heard the rumours that Tumblr might be folding soon. There's talk of employees being let go, with only skeleton staff remaining to manage the platform in the hope that a buyer comes along. These rumours have not been confirmed or denied either way, but it's true to say we have entered a sort of limbo.

With this in mind, I would strongly urge any Zepfic / rockfic writers, fan artists etc who post their works exclusively to Tumblr to migrate their work over to a03 or another suitable platform at the earliest possible opportunity. Even if the rumours are unfounded at present, it's likely only a matter of time before Tumblr really does disappear for real.

If there's truth to the rumours and a buyer comes along, well... we simply won't know what their agenda is going to be until it's implemented, so time is of the essence. Platforms that don't follow the TikTok model are no longer deemed profitable, making it extremely likely that any potential buyers will seek to change Tumblr beyond recognition, forcing fannish creativity to the margins once more.

I'm old enough to remember what happened with Livejournal in the 2000s and the feeling of being cut adrift from fan community for what seemed like forever, so I cannot stress this enough: Migrate your works and tell your friends to do the same. Look into alternative platforms for discussions, such as Discord. Even Facebook might be a temporary option, though I would strongly recommend using alt accounts and making discussion groups private and invite-only if you go there. I'm unaware of any similar alternatives to Tumblr, but if anybody can fill me in, I'd love to hear it.
