Ralph Fiennes's breakdown in the Pope's bedroom in Conclave is one of my favourite parts of the movie. Here's this man, a priest with doubts, who's lost his friend probably something akin to a mentor or leader or father, and he isn't given a second to mourn him, which is anathema to the whole religion he dedicated his life to. No, he can't take a moment to sit down and breathe because he is a manager, so he has to manage. He is then forced into suspecting his brothers and his friends, and he breaks into the Holy Father's room, because his conscience wouldn't let it rest. And then he sees the Pope's glasses and breaks down in one of the ugliest fits of weeping I remember seeing in movies.

It is such a realistic portrayal of grief and how it sneaks upon you in the most unbecoming ways and unexpected moments.

Has anyone ever read the fic "You puzzle me"? Or something along the lines, I think it's abandoned by now, but I could be wrong.

Stobotnik fic recs

I've been wanting to assemble a list of less-known fics that I love. Assume all are complete fics with no spoilers unless specified otherwise. If you wrote one of these fics and you'd like to be tagged/your fic removed just say.

Hello to a Black Bird by 2bitz (TW mention of past injury, brief mention of past torture) - a super fluffy fic in which Robotnik realises he doesn't know as much about Stone as he thought. A little bit of a possessive Robotnik. Delightful, frankly.

A Puppet Loosely Strung by clown_expert (SandyQuinn) (TW suicidal ideation, major injury, amputation, sexually explicit content, self-esteem issues) - if the triggers aren't too much for you, this fanfic did change my brain chemistry. It switches between the early relationship between Stone and Robotnik and Stone's recovery from an injury. The contrast is marvellous. The dynamic is perfect. It does get incredibly domestic too.

Did you see the stars tonight? by kidneyking (TW Sonic 1-3 movie spoilers, alcoholism, depression, grief, major character death) - Stone focused fic post sonic 3 in which he copes incredibly poorly with Robotnik dying. Despite the triggers there's also a focus on Sonic and co helping Stone cope and it made me weep at 3am. There's also some very good Sonic content.

Flaws by kharti (TW sickness, self esteem issues) - Set between sonic 2 and 3 this is a Stone focused sickfic. We have some classic Stone overworking himself and Robotnik pretending not to care. Also some incredibly funny bits. A super quick read.

Your Body, My Temple by Khoshek (TW major character almost death, major injury, violence, sexually explicit content, Robotnik controls Stone's body manually once) - This is a fic with a fav trope of mine. If you're into robot Stone content this should be totally up your alley! Mind the sexual content but alongside there's some beautiful examples of Stone and Robotnik's dynamic especially in the more caring angle for Robotnik.

Alternative Methods by Ailren (TW murder, gun violence, sexually suggestive content, mild gore) - Look I know how it looks with murder as the first trigger but we know who we are. Stone is undercover on the job and resorts to baser methods to get the job done. Much to Robotnik's jealousy irritation. Classic possessive Robotnik and an amazing depiction of Stone's quiet, cold efficiency.

I Waited For The Day by lothal_after_dark (TW hallucinations, mental illness, grief, minor injury, alcohol abuse) - In this post sonic 1 au Stone attends the Vi Arcane school of dealing with your siutationship breaking up. This is a non canon compliant au based on the idea of Robotnik getting stuck on the mushroom planet for 3 years and the resulting fallout for him and Stone. There's some sweet caretaking too.

Silent Understanding by Demetera (TW minor injury, threat of injury, mild sonic 2 spoilers) - This features another one of my fav tropes, the humanisation of the badniks and their preference for Stone. It pure fluff in the 5+1 format in a pre-movies setting with an epilogue post sonic 2.

To Die For by Bread_Bird (TW murder, major injury, blood, hospitalisation, vomiting, mild gore) - despite what the triggers might suggest this fic is pretty funny. Some classic unhinged and dangerously people pleasing Stone and some juicy concerned Robotnik. While at a conference, Stone gets sloppy dispatching an assassin and gets stabbed. As the worlds most extreme people pleaser he tells no one and slowly bleeds out until Robotnik notices. A lot of incredibly soft Robotnik towards the end.
