As someone who taught U.S. history, I always made sure not to mince words when it came to the U.S. and the variety of governments that the CIA helped overthrow, nor the atrocities they condoned due to their inaction (particularly Latin American tragedies because that's what I was writing my senior essay on). Also, keep a lookout for "The Dictators Balls: Rafael Trujillo and U.S. Dominican relations by Moulton , which is currently under peer review and examines the usage of golf tournaments by Dominican dictator Trujillo to broker deals with American diplomats. Additionally, for some primary sources you can access the LITEMPO and PB SUCCESS collections in the nsa archives for free, as they have been unclassified and released online for public view.

enough reclaiming slurs, I think in 2023 we should reclaim nascar. they banned the confederate flag on all properties & their stance on lgbtq+ isn’t just performative bc in 2013 they fined a driver 10k for using a homophobic slur, condemned indiana in a statement for an anti lgbt law, and partnered w carolina’s lgbt+ chamber of conference in 2022. nascar was founded by anti-cop moonshiners/bootleggers who drove suped-up fords to out-run the police. #yaaascar

ok this is “earring magic ken” who was introduced in 1992 (and discontinued shortly thereafter)

basically mattel had done a survey and discovered that girls didn’t think ken was “cool” enough

SO someone had the bright idea to research coolness by sending people to raves which, at the time, were mostly hosted & attended by gay men. so they went to these raves and took notes on what the fashions were and finally landed on this outfit, mesh shirt & all 

this doll became the best selling ken doll in history, mostly because gay men bought it in droves. (many of them said his necklace was supposed to be a cockring) but mattel and a number of parents weren’t very amused and discontinued the doll
