How To Write Character Flaws

It can be hard to find that balance between a character that is too perfect for readers to love and a character that is too flawed for readers to relate to.

Something I like to remember when thinking of flaws to give characters is that very often, flaws can be positive attributes that are in excess.

(This is related to Aristotle’s Virtues and Doctrine of the Mean.)

FOR INSTANCE,

Courage is a positive trait.

But taken too far? That can lead to rashness, or recklessness, which are negative traits. And without enough courage? The character is meak, fearful and cowardly, which are also negative traits.

Here are some examples to think of for your characters of positive traits taken to the extremes.

Virtue- kindness

Excess-easily taken advantage of

Deficiency- selfishness

Virtue- ambition

Excess- greed/avarice

Deficiency- lazy

Virtue- honesty

Excess- harshness

Deficiency- secrecy/dishonesty

Virue- decisiveness

It was time for her to pass on inheritances to the next generation before she was past her prime. All female werewolves, especially the lone one’s, knew when it was time to breed, to leave a legacy before moving on and living out the rest of her life; alone. Her impending, heat, she guessed it would be called had brought her here to the Avengers compound. More specifically after one blond soldier in particular, knowing Steve Rogers had the genetics to sustain the next generation.

A charity ball was the perfect time to find her target, take what was needed and leave before sunrise. Bedding the pack leader would be enough, she would be gone the instant they had finished. Entering into the compound dressed in a dark cocktail dress that accentuated thick curves, scent disguised by soaps and perfumes so no one would be none the wiser.

Quickly spotting the well-built blond sitting at the bar and making her way to him. Carefully she danced lithe fingers over strong shoulders the moment he caught her scent. Steve turning to look at her, baby blues flashing with reflected light the instant they laid on her thick frame and gracing her with a smile.

“Evening captain,” the woman began, moving in a way that told him she was there for one thing and it appeared he was going to grant it to her quicker than suspected. The blown look of his pupils had her wondering if he had caught scent of what she was, only well-bred wolves where this confident.

Taking the barstool next to him but leaving her hand on his arm, she couldn’t help but relish in the warmth pouring off the well-built alpha along with the smirk he gave her. Watching pupils swallow any color that may have remained, surprising her as without a word Steve took the hand resting on his forearm in a heated calloused one while getting to his feet. The blond was quick to tug the thick framed woman with him, darting around others who were in attendance but ignored them in favor of pulling the woman down the corridor to the elevator.

Hello everyone! In honor of 7K, I wanted to host a little challenge. I know we all often dream about a lot of things—having more money, having a better job, not having to have a job, better car, bigger house, finding the one—but what if you got it, and it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be?

What if you got it, and it caused you nothing but misery?

I present to you: The Monkey’s Paw challenge; where we take fluff prompts and turn them dark and gritty.

The options: You message me, and I think up a prompt for you OR you message me with a prompt idea, and we’ll take it as dark as we can go. And I  do mean dark. 

The Rules

Firstly, this is a dark challenge that can and probably will include smut, so NO MINORS ALLOWED, even for work that has no explicit sexual content.

Secondly, I would like to keep this to the fandoms I’m actively involved in, so Marvel characters, Chris Evans and Sebastian Stan characters, etc. If you aren’t sure, please ask! 

I’m primarily an xReader writer, so no OFC’s, OMC’s, etc. 

*Most* Tropes are accepted; Dark, Mafia, A/B/O, etc, but no: DDLG, Toilet play, Bestiality, Racism, Homophobia, Transphobia, etc.

There is a hard 1.5k word limit. I wanted to make this a real challenge for everyone, myself included! That being said, please put your fic under a cut if it exceeds more than 350 words!

Hi guys!

I’ve decided that I should start trying to earn a little money so….

I’m opening commissions as well as a Patreon!

Mind you, I’ve never done this before.. I’ve always had a ko-fi, but I’ve never really talked about it because truly I do most of this for the joy of writing. However, especially with how much money my family has lost with this covid-19 stuff, I guess it’d be a good time to start.

Here are the guidelines for both my commissions and patreon! 

Commissions (Writing):

$5 for each 500 words

$6 if smut is included (yes, smut is available for commission only)

Must be 18 to request smut

I will write just about anything (underage smut and ABO fics are a hard no from me, others will be discussed)

This will take priority over any former requests I have as well as deadlines for writing challenges

I have no real way to enforce this but there will likely be smut and I do NOT want to have charges pressed against me. Please be honest and have courtesy for my future as well as yours.
