You should only write in present tense with extreme caution.

The best advice i can give any creator is do it before you're good at it, do it BEFORE you're happy, do it while you suck, do it while you're doubting yourself and get stuck the fuck in, because waiting around to be "good enough" is a motherfucking trap of the highest degree. You'll get good along the way and better after ever project is complete. Remember, this is the greatest thing you've ever created, and then you'll do something else. You're only ever gonna get better, but not if you stand still.

i am not immune to the "character's eyes glow when they use their powers" trope
I just recently started my own fic! What I did was I got unhealthily attached to a piece of media, wanted more of the characters, and then put them in those situations and places that I wanted to see. Fanfiction is for you! The fan! Write what you want to see. Write what you want to read.
If you ever find yourself thinking, "I wish the writers would have expounded on that plot point." or, "I wish they had resolved that character." or even, "I HATE this ending, it sucks." WRITE TO FILL THE GAP.
If this feels silly, remember that literally everyone does this all the time. Even professional writers. The idea to write Rogue One from the Star War franchise came from one (1) sentence said by a character that I can't remember in this moment. "Many Bothans died to get this information." And then they wrote a whole ass movie with a tragic ending that, in my opinion, was fantastic and one of the best movies in the series.
The way to start fanfiction? With a passion for the original media.
