An affliction which I have...

Just lovely. Beautifully written.

One day Robert finds Aaron sitting on the floor at the foot of his bed, hunched over and crying. Robert immediately rushes to Aaron’s side and pulls him into his arms, trying to sooth him.

“Aaron what wrong?” Robert asks softly. “She saw. I’m a freak.” Aaron cries into Robert’s chest. “You’re not a freak. What happened?” “Liv walked in without knocking as I was getting changed…and she…she saw my scars.” Aaron’s voice breaks as he clings onto Robert. “Shh…it’s gonna be okay.” Robert soothes, kissing the top of Aaron’s head. “You didn’t see the look of horror on her face. I’m a pathetic and ugly mess.” Aaron sobs, looking up at Robert with puffy, bloodshot eyes as he tries to brush his tears away with the sleeve of his jumper.

Robert grabs Aaron’s face in his hands, forcing Aaron to look at him. “You’re not pathetic or ugly. You’re the strongest and most beautiful person I know.” Robert says softly, his thumbs brushing away the tears trickling down Aaron’s face. “What if this is how it’s always going to be? Me always scared of anyone seeing my scars…even my own family?” Aaron croaks, staring up at Robert with fresh tears brimming in his eyes. “I promise you it won’t. One day you’ll be able to look at your scars and be reminded of where you’ve been…how you fought your way through a difficult time in your life and came out the other side stronger. But they don’t have to dictate your future. Only you do that.” Robert whispers, his eyes glistening with so much love and unshed tears. “Just look at me.” Robert murmurs as he swiftly pulls off his shirt, revealing his naked chest to Aaron and raising Aaron’s hand to his scar by his heart. “It reminds me of the man I used to be and whom I don’t want to go back to being again.”

“Does it still hurt.” Aaron whispers as the tips of his fingers touch Robert’s scar. “No not anymore. But the sight of doesn’t make you love me any less does it?” “No of course not.” “Then why should your family or me love you any less bc of yours?!” Robert says softly in that voice he only ever reserves for Aaron. “I dunno.” Aaron croaks, biting his lip nervously and eyes not wavering from Robert’s scar. “I love you Aaron. You’re my everything. Scars or no scars. Nothing will be able to change how I feel about you. And your family feels the same. They love you for you.” “I guess so.” Aaron mumbles “I love you too. Don’t know what I’d do without you.” “Good thing you never have to find out then.” Robert teasingly grins, earning him a watery smile from Aaron that warms Robert’s heart as he pulls Aaron into his arms, holding him tight, and dropping a tender kiss on Aaron’s forehead.

I love love love the call back to the fact that Robert has been legitimately obsessed with Aaron since essentially the moment they met.

Like… bring him a random cup of let’s-be-mates coffee, find reasons to corner him in bathrooms and talk to him, get excited when he pins you to walls, fake a car break down to get him alone and kiss him, wait outside a garage for who knows how long to get a chance to fuck him, pin him to a wall to kiss his face off, invest a shit ton of money in his business so you have a reason to spend time with him, leave your future step-son alone to od because when Aaron says jump…, pay freakish amounts of money to take him to fancy hotels, get depressed when he breaks up with you, sit alone in a barn for hours waiting for him to show up, ditch your own wedding to hook up with him, lose your shit when you lose sight of him on a cliff, try to convince him breaking up isn’t the answer even tho his parents threaten to out the affair if you don’t stay away from him, sit outside his house in the rain to confront him about his health, irritate him into speaking to you with extravagant donations and illegal activity, risk him turning you in to the cops so that you can let him know he’s not alone, get your family to leave town so you can spend the week alone with him, go looking for him on the woods with his mother who actively hates you, threaten/attack people who threaten to expose the affair rather than just breaking up with him, have more of an emotional break down after your mean to him than when you wife kicks you out, get drunk and bare you heart and soul to him, care more about the fact that he still cares about you than the fact that you just got the crap beat out you, do manual labor just to spend time around him, go kinda bat shit when he says he doesn’t love you, don’t make a single move against him when he tells your wife about the affair, become determined to prove he didn’t shoot you even tho all the evidence point to him because you can’t stand the thought that he hates you that much, willing try to turn in your own brother for the crime to get him out of jail, jump at just the possibility of a chance that he might want to be with you again, try to invest in another business just to be around him, move heaven and earth to help him when you can see something is seriously wrong, threaten to kill his father after finding out he abused him as a child, be a constant pillar of support and love through one of the toughest times of his life because he needs you and you’ll do whatever it takes to help him even if your never with him again, bribe a false witness to try to help with his case, welcome his sister full time into your lives even though you don’t really like her all that much and she’s kind of a pain in the ass and tries to send you to jail, kidnap a snotty teenager to protect your family with him, fill a barn with bread and plan a super sentimental proposal, help him figure out what to do after he kidnaps a snotty teenager to protect your family, open up about some of the most traumatizing shit from your childhood to help him understand you and what you want for your future with him, refuse to leave him behind and almost drown trying to save him because you’d rather fuckin die than leave without him, GO BACK FOR THE RING, plan the most extra party/trip for his birthday, end your engagement for about three seconds because wtf were you thinking if you haven’t been able to walk away yet your not gonna be able to start now, THROW HIM A SURPRISE WEDDING, spend sleepless nights missing him and waiting all day for the few minutes you get on the phone with him, walk around terrified that you’ll lose him over one drunken mistake but finally decide that you love him too much to lie to him, throw a briefcase full of money into a fire because he told you to, try to ruin the family that has one member that you blame for the fact that you lost him, stalk him and his new boyfriend, have a comatose dream where all you care about it getting to him and then stare in awe at how good he looks in the suit your brain chose for him, let him go, help his new boyfriend make him happy, help him break his best friend out of jail, help him cook V-day dinner for his boyfriend and then share it with him when said boyfriend cancels, get giddy over the slight possibility that he might want you again, blow off a hot guy and go back to the garage where you first fucked for reasons, doubt being with him because you love him so much that losing him again would break you, carry your rings with you at all times just in case, put yourself at the mercy of a guy you hate to save him, plan to propose where you first kissed, PROPOSE WHERE YOU FIRST KISSED…. *deep breath* obsessed.

And that’s just some the stuff that he does. Don’t even get me started on the stuff he says.

If you’ve known Robert since he was a kid, especially teenaged Robert, you know the losses in his life. You know the nasty things Andy did. You understand why he valued money in place of real love. You understand the closeted Robert. Then you know how far he has come to this time. You get why he loves, adores Aaron. I’ve always liked Robert, rather unstood him, even though he’s done awful things. I always knew the good that was in him. Aaron brings that out in Robert-the good. 

“I hope that there are people who like Robert, empathise with him and see that he isn’t just a monster. Maybe he divides opinion - some people absolutely hate him, some people love to hate him and maybe some people even feel sorry for him. He’s a troubled character with problems and they manifest themselves with the horrible things he does.”

I agree. I was thinking back through Robert’s life. It’s been really rare and LONG, LONG ago that he let his real feelings show...other than anger. Aaron is THE only person I’ve seen adult Robert let see the REAL Robert. That’s because only Vic & Diane even remember the real Robert besides Aaron. That’s why they love him. They know the good things in Robert. Aaron really is helping Robert to recapture that part of himself. I think of Robert’s other romances, especially Chrissy. He never ever convinced me that truly deeply loved anyone. When i see Robert look at Aaron, it’s plain that he not only loves Aaron deeply, but absolutely adores Aaron. Aaron really knows that, too. Aaron showed it tonight in what he said about what Robert would do for him. I doubt that too many people have anyone who loves them as deeply as Robert loves Aaron.

Hi Faiza! What would be your ideal Robron scene right now? An out-pour of feelings, a heartfelt conversation, or maybe both?

Aaaaah, I’m still waiting for a scene where Robert is … full on crying. LIKE FULL ON SOBBING, and Aaron comes and comforts him, and they have both, an out pour, and then it be heartfelt too. 

I just really need Aaron to be there for Robert. I need to see more of it. I think it’s something I will never tire of seeing, because Robert puts on this bravado of being so damn strong for everyone, and he isn’t. And I need to see him crack and to see Aaron be the one to see him in his fragments, see the other side to Robert.

And then comfort him, hold him. Oh god, yeah.
